Arnold was my fave Sweathog. I didn't find any of the others comical. Ron Palillo played the part beautifully. I could see him being the son of Edith Bunker.
sorry john, but I don't think welcome back, kotter is a classic I just think it was very popular for it's time. Because if it was a classic it most likely would have re-runs like the golden girls, seinfeld, friends, everybody loves raymond, the cosby show, i love lucy etc.
No, it's definitely a classic. And a feel-good show. And the cause of the occasional lack of reruns are either a cost the cable networks aren't willing to pay, or due to the fact rubbish like Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond & Friends (which all went on WAY too long) are monopolizing the schedules. For example, The Honeymooners (another CLASSIC) ran for years, then suddenly in the 1990s, it's all newer, lame programming taking its slot.
I know I was dang near floored when I heard that Robert Hegyes passed away.. and that Juan Epstein left school altogether and the whole building as well.
This small and unknown fact I've kept hidden can now see the light of the day..
Of all the Sweathogs..I related to (AND looked alot like in my younger days) WAS Juan Epstein..
From the hair style...to the blue jean sleeveless vests he had..I also recall this one teacher .. Looked like Mr, Woodman..but had the personality of Mr.Kotter
@earl77, OUR CHILDHOOD is NOT slipping away a bit at a time. It's still THERE, in plain sight, all you gotta do is go there again and USE YOUR IMAGATION. Time is relative, and my Uncle Eddie says it's true. Was then, is now. Don't cry for Robert. He did good here! A blessing.
Makes me happy to see the cast so joyful about their experiences on the show and then I come to the realization that Robert Hegyes is gone. Sighh. RIP Mr. Hegyes. You are my all-time favorite sitcom character!
@imthedorf1964 Gabe has said that it was based on a saying from around his old neighborhood when he was a kid, which was, "Up your ass with Mobile gas," which they obviously couldn't use on the show, so they changed it up a bit.
I had opportunity to be an early teen while The Sweathogs were the most famous classroom in the U.S. Juan Epstein was my favorite character because of the Marx Bros skits they used to do. I am truly saddened to hear of Mr Hegyes passing. I know with clear conscience that heaven needed another angel, and he was picked. I hope the town of Metuchen places a monument for him. Please... Juan Epstein's Mother
How wonderful it is to see sitcom actors embrace the vehicle that gave them success, rather than the all-too-often bitterness we see from many who felt typecast. Great cast and a great show! BTW, Ellen does voice-over work in LA and I had the opportunity to work with her on a project a few years ago. Very nice and very talented - a true pro.
Love this show to death... actually have it on dvd. Ron Palillo was not happy with the show. He was a trained Shakespearean actor, and did not appreciate the lowbrow comedy, even though it made him a star. But, I read that somewhere 20 years ago. He may have changed his mind about that, I don't know. I was glad to see JT there. I live in Ocala, Fl...his adopted home. We hear stories of JT sightings all over the place! LOL
@videozfann - Wow! Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs still looks the same! Ellen Travolta got around beyond Welcome Back Kotter; She played Scott Baio's mom on 'Happy Days' and 'Charles in Charge'. It really was good to see all of them again. It's shame Ron (Palillo) couldn't make it. I would have loved to hear him do his famous laugh! *lol*
@HowToEatWaffles Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. And I didn't recognize Epstein until the camera panned on him. I was wondering, who's that old guy with a mop on his head next to Washington....LOL.
"Dear Mr. Kotter.....I refuse to write any more notes for Juan because he's 60 years old and shouldn't still be in high school anyway! Signed Epstein's mother"
It would have been nice to hear more comments from the other cast members instead of just John Travolta.I guess his ego just would not allow that to happen.
source comments have said that "hotsy totsy" Debralee Scott (sitcom and game show regular) left us in 2005. I've been mourning her passing since I found out.
like actress Suzanne Somers she played a "dirty harry" victim as well appeared in George Lucas' classic "american graffiti". unlike Somers she didn't become that known
@JP5466 Yep, Marcia Strassman & Tina Louise must have the same plastic surgeon! I've always known that Ron Pallilo was Gay; just like I always knew Ricky Martin & Gene Anthony Ray was Gay the moment they strutted onto the stage... But Jethro Bodine!?(Max Baer Jr.) Guess my "Gaydar" was off???
Regarding Ricky Martin, it's funny how well they keep the gayness hidden in order to keep his female fan base swooning. Without them, he would not have been as successful.
I was 9 years old in 1975 and I had no clue Ron P. was gay... in fact I didn't even know what 'gay' was back then -lol.
Man... I'm still disapointed after seeing this cast reunion on the tv land awards. The reunion itself was awesome and I was waiting for it. But man... I can not get over Robert Hegeys... no way man that's not Epstein. I mean it sound slike him and still looks like him around the eyes... but... oh the disapointment. Still love Epstein though. He'll forever be a teenager in my heart.
