When I listen to these old Appalachian fiddle tune I can't help but think that they are truly ancient melodies. Maybe as old a bowed instruments themselves. When you hear the music of the bowed instruments of Asia especially Central Asia it sounds so similar. Maybe these tunes where carried on the backs of horses to Europe and then across the sea in English ships.
G'day Lester and Kim, thanks for posting such great old time tunes and some history. Just thought you might like to know there's a bunch of us old time muso's in Melbourne, Australia learned this tune from Lester and play it in our sets. Inspirational!
He has one CD called Old Timey. I think you can get it from Jake Krack's web site. The Augusta Heritage Center made a DVD called That Old Time Sound that is interesting also.
I've been meaning to list this stuff on my channel but don't get around to it.
This tune has a strange flow to it and is kind of difficult learn.

You're not alone. Lester (with Kim playing banjo) won 1st place at the West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville last weekend playing this tune.

I love this! We'd all love to hear some more of those spooky modal tunes from Lester. And maybe a crooked tune or two?
