  • @FHomeBrew - Sound waves need a medium to compress and expand. The vibrations of the plate result in the visual, the vibrations of the air-to-eardrum results in the audio. Sound waves apply the pressure. The plate isn't goin to move anything without them.

I believe sound waves pass through ANY medium (so, NOT thru a vacuum). In fact, it travels faster through steel than water or air.

Light, on the other hand, travels through a vacuum but (at least in the visual spectrum) not through steel, etc.

  • 1:49 looks like an error in tic-tac-toe

  • Sound waves is incorrect. Its a metal plate that is forced to oscillate @ the center via harmonic motion. The frequency of the vibrations increases though-out the video hence the increase in pitch volume. Sound is not making the patterns. At certain frequencies, called natural frequencies, the plate hits resonance. This means some of the surface of the plate remains still. This is where the "rice" gathers and a pattern is formed. The pattern is called the Mode Shape

  • @AgilePeanut Why is sound waves incorrect though? Sound can move through a metal plate right? Just like sound in water, or any medium apart from air.

  • @FHomeBrew Because its not sound that is making the shapes. Its just the vibrations of the plate. The vibrations are what is creating sound. Sound is not a form of vibrations but rather a pressure wave that can pass through fluids, they cant pass through solids. Sound can appear to be passing through a material but in reality only vibrations are and when these vibrations reach the surface they become pressure waves which we can hear.

  • @AgilePeanut K thnx. My teachers never made that distinction. TIL.

  • could this have some realtion whit the weird screens that windows media player (and others) shows ??? i have some knowledge bout physics, but not that much xd

  • Has anyone made the connection between these patterns and CROP CIRCLES?

  • whaaaat

  • 1:31 alien frog

  • OMFG AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • circles get smaller at higher frequencies of sound waves..

  • woooooooooow!

  • wow! thats is really cool!

  • crop circles?

  • @AnonymoussourceL0L dude thats exactly what came to my mind when i saw this

  • this is brilliant!

  • wow!

  • That just crazy. Whats used to create the pitch do you know?

  • im not so sure what they used but i always thought it was an amp

  • @supaflyfoo1001 An amp doesn't create pitch. It's not a musical instrument. An amp is responsible for volume. I wonder also which instrument they are using.

  • at a guess its a line level oscillator running sine waves.

  • There is a speaker in the center of the platform.
