I am having bankart surgery, but my doc wants to do an ortho on the 18 of this month just "to see what he's getting into" then, he wants to do a full open bankart prob two weeks after that.
Anyone know if that is normal? To do a preliminary ortho? Suppossedly, he one of the top should guys in my area. Just not sure why I need 2 surgeries.
costs a lot if you aren't covered by insurance, and take it easy for several months while healing, but is so worth not having more dislocations! it's probably best to ease gently into heavy sports and activity; and every person, every injury is unique. once you're able to move again, it may hurt and feel stiff, but moving around and using it--carefully to begin with--lubricates the joint and gets it moving better. good luck to everyone, such a painful injury.
GuiGo89 - 3 years now and I am still amazed at how good it feels and how much confidence I have in the arms. I am a happy camper. Take it easy during rehab, do you rehab as instructed and you will be fine.
@rickkeil had mine done in 06'. my repaired shoulder is better than the uninjured one. like you said though, the recovery is a mofo. i've had a knee fixed as well and the shoulder was 10x worse. however, well worth it isn't the word for it. I hear that open bankart has become just about outdated now a few years later and they can get as good of results with a scope with some type of new technique.
It takes 12 to 18 months to fully recover from this surgery (bankart)....I underwent it twice, failed first time because I was cleared to lift and get back to any sport activity 6 months post-op... I read it takes up to 18 months!
@Cali4niaboy99 My surgery cost $14,186.00.The bad thing is Nov 15th I will have to have i again 2 months from having the 1st one.2 days after surgery I was in therapy. The therapist raised my arm and my shoulder popped and is worse now than before the surgery.
can someone please tell me how this surgery costs? I have no insurance and I think I need to have this surgery done on both of my shoulders. They pop out sooo easy, sometimes when I'm sleeping.
it went very well, the anesthesia didn't make me sick ha that was the only thing i was really worried about, but it didn't hurt and it healed up really well after about 6 months. Now its back to new
yeah you were right...the day of my surgery, when I got home I couldn't stop eating, and it was like that for days. 6 months recovery? Wow...my doctor said it would take 6 weeks. I guess it depends on the person.
If you're a guy, the chances you get sick are less than a woman.
The modern anesthetics and anti emetics(drugs that help minimize nausea) are very good. I've had a lot of orthopedic surgeries and have never gotten sick. Even some of the drugs they use to put you to sleep(Propofol)actually have been shown to decrease nausea-perhaps that was just Diprivans(name brand) manufacturer's propaganda though!
My first surgery was an open Bankart - it failed after a few years, the last was a scope, and I've dislocated fully needing ER just recently. It never goes back to 'normal' sorry folks
u have a plane shoulder sockets? because i have, and i'm affraid, that it will luxate also after the repair. I'd like to know your experiencies and how strong is it. tx a lot
Okay, so I am now 1 year out ont he right shoulder and 1.5 years out on the left. No luxations, no problems. For a while on the right I was getting the tingles like it was asleep if I rolled on it wrong in bed, but that has gone away with excersize and time. I am very pleased and very confident in the repairs. BTW - because of my job I do quite a bit of lifting, no problems so far.
Thanks a lot for reply. I had my operation 6 weeks ago and it did hurt terribly. That's why I wanted to know if it was worth it. Now I hope it's gnna be okey as soon as possible.
@chronikuss if you have this surgery, that bitch aint going anywhere bro. my repaired shoulder is better than my uninjured one. i had 10+ complete dislocations prior to surgery.
@rickkeil wow, that makes me less nervous... you did this like 3 years ago, and i m doing it probly in this week, i m really nervous, but reading all descriptions from the bankart repair videos , i m getting more relaxd
sorry, well no - I was out for the operation, and the oxycodone takes care of the pain the first day or so. The tingling sensation when the arm wakes up from the nerve block kinda gets old - it is like your arm fell asleep and is taking 6 hours to wake up.
So, today is the 3rd day after my second shoulder was done. it hurst if I skip the meds, but things are going well. The other arm, which has been healing for 8 months now, feels GREAT and I have amazing confidence in it now. A recommended proceedure if you have chronic shoulder dislocations like I had.

Do you have full range of motion after the first surgery? Most of mine is there.I have to stretch to get externel rotation.
oldladyshoulder 4 years ago
Yes, I am back to full and complete motion without the worry of a dislocation. It is great. I couldn't be happier with the results.
