Oh my goodness, she, the great Miss Barbara Stanwyck, did this brilliantly!! She's pure genius. Now this, ladies and gentlemen, is acting. Man oh man, they don't make them like her anymore.
Be it a television mini-series or otherwise, The Thornbirds has THIS scene in which Miss Stanwyck excels beyond most any "acting" I've ever witnessed. In this one incredibly honest and uncharacteristically genuine human scene, Stanwyck emotes her lines with all the conviction of her own truth. I can watch this scene one hundred times and feel precisely what she projects with the same impact as the first time I saw it. Her emotional prowess is timeless. Brava bravissima Barbara Stanwyck!

Stanwyck was so good, that Chamberlain disappears in the same scene. She acts him right off the screen, and he was too old for the part anyway in 1983, and all the pancake was embarrassing. Thus dispite fine work by Richard Kiley and Jean Simmons, once 'Mary Carson' dies there's a void in the rest of the series nothing fills. With beefy Bryan Brown in the mix too, who wants to watch a twentysomething chance a 49-year-old all around the globe?

This has to be the silliest clip I have ever seen in my life. First of all,old women do not have sexual desires...especially a very old woman of this age. I often think of this scene and I'm glad it's here. I was young when I first saw this and it had such an impact on me, the most powerful, touching, heart wrenching, honest performance. Bravo, Barbara, your Emmy for this role was so well deserved. I am choking with tears watching it.

The Thornbirds, for me, was the best mini series ever made. I was18 when it first aired. I have heard a few people over the years critisize this work as being over the top, too much agnst, too much emotion. As I have grown through adulthood I say more than ever that sometimes, for some people, real life can be much like this. I am a little jealous of those people who can not relate to unrequited love. I am happy for them. As for me, I understood this brilliant scene at 18.Even more so now.
Hands down, one of the most raw, most searing, most daring parts even written for an older woman, and brilliantly acted by the incredible Barbara Stanwyck. I loved it when I watched it in my mid-20s, but now, in my mid-50s, I can REALLY understand and feel her emotions in the most intimate of ways. A standing ovation to one of the greatest actresses of all time.
Ha! She gave it to him! That was soooooooooo wonderfully played by Stanwyck! I am catholic and I think it sucks priests are not allowed to marry. Its so old fashioned and its enough!
Part 2. I felt that Barbara's character was more connected to God than the priest. She was honest about herself, showed so much vulnerablity, unselfish, and truly loved him. I loved this scene, she was a great actress. So much character and grace in her words to him. Amazing. I wish I had that type of talent.
This is my favorite scene of the movie. The priest did not have a clue about age, love, and did not know himself. He was completely blinded by his ideals of himself, ambition, etc. and this scene challenged our false ideals about age. A person does not stop living, feeling, wanting, because they are older. She is more than her age, like he is more than his ambitions and his priest hood.
The women in this story, truly loved him. But he only loved himself, an ideal of himself.

barbara stanwyck is incredible. nothing like her today ... well, maybe meryl streep, but they don't even give her any good roles anymore. oh no, today in the usa, reality tv and silly game shows have taken over. no more *quality* just mediocrity in large quantities. what a shame....
similar style (of classical Hollywood melodrama) as when she railed against the trap of mediocrity her married life became in Crime of Passion ('57). but here she's in a different life stage, and it's got ten tons the power of "i coulda been a contender" for the demographics her character represents - or anyone who is/has been subject to the fate of time and lost chances.
I could say much, and Stanwyck has so many great sister actresses who I won't even try to insult by listing and then forgetting somebody.

I was in my late 20s (in my prime!) when I first saw this scene, and was blown away. Now, at nearly 54, I have a whole new respect for Mary's feelings! Damn, Stanwyck was amazing. Remember how beautiful she was in that "Dynasty" spin-off? She not only aged well, I think even her talent kept increasing with age, if that's possible. Amazing actress, and I should know; my late mother was an actress. A well-deserved Emmy!
The first time I saw this movie was in my night school class. I was really high and I think I was the only one to even pay attention to the movie. I don't regret it.
Wow,this was one of the most powerful,most emotionally driven scenes of Barbara's career.I remember feeling every ounce of her pain,and anger,and emotion.She made you believe that she was bitter that she'd grown old,and was no longer a sexual attraction to men.She just let spill all of her bottled up bitterness,and she gave this performance everything she had.Even seeing it today,still brings out a flood of emotions,now that's powerful acting.Bravo!!!!! @Tgyrl66 I know what you mean. I never saw her on The Big Valley with Lee Majors and Linda Evans but this speech was so powerful and moving. She was so nasty at least when I was younger but give the lady her props. She was a successful businesswoman, she didn't give her Brother any special treatment, and you saw how sad, lonely, and depressed she was knowing that she was competing with her Neice for Father Ralph's Love but she had so much materialistically but was so poor emotionally.

Stanwyck was so good, that Chamberlain disappears in the same scene. She acts him right off the screen, and he was too old for the part anyway in 1983, and all the pancake was embarrassing. Thus dispite fine work by Richard Kiley and Jean Simmons, once 'Mary Carson' dies there's a void in the rest of the series nothing fills. With beefy Bryan Brown in the mix too, who wants to watch a twentysomething chance a 49-year-old all around the globe?

This has to be the silliest clip I have ever seen in my life. First of all,old women do not have sexual desires...especially a very old woman of this age. The Thornbirds, for me, was the best mini series ever made. I was18 when it first aired. I have heard a few people over the years critisize this work as being over the top, too much agnst, too much emotion. As I have grown through adulthood I say more than ever that sometimes, for some people, real life can be much like this. I am a little jealous of those people who can not relate to unrequited love. I am happy for them. As for me, I understood this brilliant scene at 18.Even more so now.

Hands down, one of the most raw, most searing, most daring parts even written for an older woman, and brilliantly acted by the incredible Barbara Stanwyck. I loved it when I watched it in my mid-20s, but now, in my mid-50s, I can REALLY understand and feel her emotions in the most intimate of ways. A standing ovation to one of the greatest actresses of all time.

Part 2. I felt that Barbara's character was more connected to God than the priest. She was honest about herself, showed so much vulnerablity, unselfish, and truly loved him. I loved this scene, she was a great actress. So much character and grace in her words to him. Amazing. I wish I had that type of talent.

This is my favorite scene of the movie. The priest did not have a clue about age, love, and did not know himself. He was completely blinded by his ideals of himself, ambition, etc. and this scene challenged our false ideals about age. A person does not stop living, feeling, wanting, because they are older. She is more than her age, like he is more than his ambitions and his priest hood.
The women in this story, truly loved him. But he only loved himself, an ideal of himself.

I was in my late 20s (in my prime!) when I first saw this scene, and was blown away. Now, at nearly 54, I have a whole new respect for Mary's feelings! Damn, Stanwyck was amazing. Remember how beautiful she was in that "Dynasty" spin-off? She not only aged well, I think even her talent kept increasing with age, if that's possible. Amazing actress, and I should know; my late mother was an actress. A well-deserved Emmy!

Wow,this was one of the most powerful,most emotionally driven scenes of Barbara's career.I remember feeling every ounce of her pain,and anger,and emotion.She made you believe that she was bitter that she'd grown old,and was no longer a sexual attraction to men.She just let spill all of her bottled up bitterness,and she gave this performance everything she had.Even seeing it today,still brings out a flood of emotions,now that's powerful acting.Bravo!!!!! She was so nasty at least when I was younger but give the lady her props. She was a successful businesswoman, she didn't give her Brother any special treatment, and you saw how sad, lonely, and depressed she was knowing that she was competing with her Neice for Father Ralph's Love but she had so much materialistically but was so poor emotionally.

I don't believe in the Devil. I think that is just a scare tactic invented by the religious institution of Christianity to scare people into joining Christianity against their will. If sexuality is a private, sacred act according to the Catholic Church, why doesn't the Church let its volunteered messengers partake in such sacredness? How long can a priest channel his desire to masturbate into going over the Rosary twelve to fifteen times? And, how am I "defiling" the Church?
