  • This is the exact same room I had when I traveled from California to Memphis, TN.. I loved my lil room lol!!

  • Hello there, how are you? I plan on taking the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle on a Superliner Rommette. This is my very first time on this route (I am a Northeast Corridor traveler) and I am absolutely looking forward to it! I love America! How is the food and attendant service? One fact I know already is the service on the Empire Builder has to be better than on an airplane. I'd love to hear your response!

  • @jcho0222 I cant speak for anyone else, but I had a great experience. The attendant I had was fantastic and the food is pretty good too.

  • Nice, very quiet train. One day if i ever get enough funds i wanna try the chicago-new orleans run.

  • Is this room big enough for a large guy? I'm talking 350lbs, 6'4".

  • @Michael55443 Yes, I am that size and it worked fine for me.

  • I've only ridden the Family Bedroom and the Bedroom (formerly, "Deluxe Bedroom) with the en suite bathroom and shower. But anything is better than riding in coach with the riff raff.

  • Thanks taking the coast starlight next year and this really helps. Just curious do you have to pay for each person sleeping in the sleeper?

  • @ElasticViper Each person will have to buy their own train ticket but you only pay one flat price per room.

  • Thank you for the vid mate ! Very informative ! I am travelling from NYC to New Orleans Century Viewliner in January ! Cant wait now after viewing your vid ! Cheers !

  • bet the train was over 4hrs late. i never did like the superliner roomettes to much. the cars are old as dirt and half the time the A/C doesnt work in the room. the viewliners are a lot better because the rooms are bigger and the cars are newer.

  • @KimKyleMary 2 pieces of luggage 50lb maxium weight a piece for check. its pretty hard to have something stolen if its in your room because with the curtains closed no one can tell if you are in your room or not without having to knock first and no thief is going to be that stupid.

  • Thanks for posting this video. I've really been thinking about taking this train and seriously thinking about getting a roomette. I don't think I want to go all the way across country in coach.

  • At about 1:45 you show the systems controls. I haven't been in a sleeper that the "Music Control" or Thermostat has done anything. Luckily you can hear the paging system from the hallway even with the door closed.

  • Excellent video. I'll be in the states this summer and was thinking of getting a roomette from Virginia to Alabama (which i think is like 20 hours or so) - so it was a very informative video. The room looked alot smaller than I imagined!

  • has anyone ever toldyou you sound like tom hanks. i love you jenny. awsome video, very helpful

  • Thanks for posting this video here. Better idea on how the roomette is set out..and better than the schematics on Amtrak;s web site. Were you able to get WI-Fi from the room there?

  • @mightymac63 I'm not sure how wi-fi works on the train. At the time I didn't have a laptop so I didn't get to test it. I may be taking another train trip in a few weeks and this time I will have a laptop so if I do, I will make a vid about it.

  • @mightymac63 wifi isnt that great, i mean i could get a little connection everytime we hit a station but that was about it

  • @mightymac63 none of the trains have wifi unless your riding the acela or alcea express

  • @ryanb273 not totally true. they have it on the coast starlight and Cascades.

  • @mightymac63 There is no wifi service on the empire builder.

  • great video

  • Excellent vid. But no locks on the doors?!!

  • Thanks for the vid, excellent info, this seems to be a lot quieter then some of the other amtrack vids

  • Hi All, Would any one with first hand exxperience can someone tell abt comfort factor in Rommette section of amtrak from Chicago to San Francisco.I am planning to travel with my wife on this route.

  • @anjalisailwal04 I don't know what the comfort factor is on an Amtrak sleeping car is, but I can tell you about the comfort factor on a VIA Rail Canada train from Toronto to Vancouver is - how would I describe it, the BEST 3 nights of sleep EVER ! ! ! !

  • that was neat !

  • @northlanderdude Hi All, Would any one with first hand exxperience can someone tell abt comfort factor in Rommette section of amtrak from Chicago to San Francisco.I am planning to travel with my wife on this route.

  • thanks for the video bud. I watched this video same time last year, before i went on my trip from nyc to seattle. Your video helped me alot. I have taken the Lake shore limited from nyc to chicago. In Chicago Amtrak has a great lounge only for sleeper car customers. Make sure those of you guys who are going to Chicago via a room or roomette go in that lounge. Then i toke the Empire buildere to Seatlle. Any body have any ? feel free to ask me. Leroy

  • tomorrow this

video will be a year old

  • That is a very, VERY small space.

  • I saw a similar arrangement on a train going south out of new york but, it had a toilet and water featjres which yours do not...we did the bedroom which has shower, toilet and wash basin...btw, all the first class has meals included...

  • awesome youtube name man!! God is good!! awesome video!

  • Hey, Thank you for doing this. We have never gone on the train before and we are thinking about riding it over to WhiteFish to see my family in March. It would be my husband and I plus a 5 year old and we didn't know whether to go with Business class seats or with a sleeper room. Now I see the size and not sure the room would work for the three of us. THANKS!!

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I'm hoping to take the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago in April, mostly because I've always wanted to. I'll be traveling solo so I think this will be more than adequate for me.

  • Thank you! I'm gathering information because I'm considering doing a 1-month pass and traveling back and forth across the country. This was very helpful.

  • I've been trying to describe the roomette to my girlfriend, and this was perfect. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the nice video. We just took the Empire Builder from Chicago to Pasco Washington and really liked it. We had a sleeper with a shower and toilet. Very nice and cozy. We only left the room to eat. Great food! We could hear the people in the next room occasionally. Most people were very quiet.

  • i was wondering how quite it is can u hear the other ppl in the next room?

  • Thanks for posting

  • This is great, I may visit a friend in Washington this fall and was wondering what it would be like. I was wondering though if the Empire had showers, and if they do how big are they?

  • @KimKyleMary I took a backpack and a gym bag basically, and then I have one smaller bag, kinda looked like a computer bag. I kept everything in the roomette with me. They say you have to be careful because things have come up stolen before on the trains, but I left my stuff in the room when I went to the observation car and nothing was touched. So I think for the most part it is safe.

On each train, they have a baggage storage area inside the train. It's usually on the lower car by the door.

  • The so called lake is actually the mississippi river. After leaving Minneapolis/St.Paul the train follows the river down to wisconson. It crosses the river at Red Wing Mn. Then down to La Cross Wi. it crosses Back over the black river & the mississippi again.

  • thanks

  • thanks :)

  • is this ideal for 3ppl? i understand it's cramped :[ But the bedroom is just to expensive. >_<

  • @romka4567 It would be hard for three people to fit in the smaller units. Two regular size people is about all it will fit.

  • @romka4567 If you want to fit 3 people in a room, the bedroom on Amtrak is your best bet.

  • @romka4567 If the third person is a child, then sort of, but you can always spend alot of time in the lounge. It's still better than flying, and let's not even mention driving.

  • @romka4567 theres a 2 person limit for roomettes.

  • are they really that small

  • Thanks for doing this. Very helpful for my wife and I as we are boarding the City of New Orleans for Jazz Fest in 36 hours. Your video answers a lot of questions we had. Looks like very cozy space...

  • Excellent info! I am travelling from Chicago to San Diego next week, and I was wondering what the sleeper cab experience is going to be like. I'm flying in from Manchester, UK, to Chicago but figured I should see your country a little more than just out of an aeroplane window, and the amtrak seemed the most relaxing way to do it. I'm pretty excited about the whole adventure! :)

  • Have fun and enjoy the trip. The scenery through Montana and Washington is really great!

  • @DoomDalek I hope your trip is enjoyable but I have to warn you American trains are nothing compared to the nice trains you have in Europe (they are much crappier).

  • @DoomDalek GREAT isnt it so fun

  • Thank you, this answers a lot of questions I had. I'm heading from Milwaukee to Chico California and I was wondering about the accomodations. You answered every one of them much better than Amtraks website. Bearded people rock!

  • yeah...they have a snack car also. i forget what kinds of snacks they sell. but we went in there and kids got a snack. there was a couple who met on train and began to drink too much, sitting in front of us. they ended up arguing. but it didnt get bad. i hope they keep the Amtrak going.

  • our family took Empire Bldr from No. Minn to Chicago and back a few years ago. We loved it. So much nicer than flying. I hope to never fly again. I would like to take the Amtrak down South to see some family. Its so nice to be able to get up and move around so much. Relaxing vs. stressful flying. My kids liked the car where they all played cards etc. They all ate in the dining car but i did not. Would love to have had a sleeper room. I always wanted to since i saw "some like it hot"

  • I'm jealous I love the train. Last trip was San Antonio to Richmond.

  • "Merry New Year!" Sorry, can't help but think of the "Trading Places" train scene while watching this!:D watch?v=UpqknwKbvDE&feature=related

  • wow that's nice - but im used to taking the amtrak for only 3 hours max, so i've never seen those seats made into little rooms lolol.

  • and 5 stars!

    thanks,enjoyed it,a lot!

  • Looks pretty neat, comfy and private and QUIET,not bad at all.How long was your trip?

How was the food?Did you take your own at all?

Also, what's that camera you have there?Takes a very decent video, how much memory?

lots of question marks in my comment, sorry 'bout that

  • It was a 2 1/2 day trip total. 31 hours to chicago and 10 hours to memphis, then a 2 hour ride home.

The food on the empire builder was VERY good. Hot and tasty. On the city of new orleans, not so much. And yes, I took a bunch of my own food just in case as I heard they run out some times. I am going to do a "tips to train riding" video soon with that info.

I used an older version FLIP camera for this one. I have three cams right now and it takes the best video out of all of them.

  • you ain't flying home? awesome

    boycott the airlines

  • LOl, well wasn't so much of a boycott. It was a little thing called a blizzard snow storm that kept me from getting across the mountains to catch my plane. This was the back up plan. :o)

  • Amen! I love that video that make me wish to have an experience for full bed in the training, but I couldn't because they don't have a sleeping rooms back in 1997 for my cousin's graduation.

  • they allowed you to bring a camera on the train

  • yes, you can bring camera's and camcorders on the trains.

  • so are you not permitted to have cameras on planes in the US?
