It could be something as simple as someone leaning on the doors. My train came to a grinding stop just outside Leyton station because someone was leaning on the doors.
This happened because the T/OP (train operator) didnt keep the ATO start buttons depressed for long enough, if this happens the train simply comes to a stop using what is known as an ATO brake which is neither an emergency brake or a normal service brake, its sort of in between the two.
Some trains will let you release the start buttons quickly, some wont, they all have there own characteristics.
@time885 A computer system that operates the train by itself under driver supervision. Drivers are responsible for door control. And sometimes drive manually in certain situations and on Sundays.
@TrainBusJaguar , the ato relay wasnt held in long enough, this is either driver not holding the start buttons in long enough or ato needing reboot, it certianly isnt a train failiure as the
The train didn't fail. There are sensors inside the doors...so when people lean on the doors heavily the sensors think the doors aren't shut properly.
The sensors then tell the onboard computer that the doors aren't shut and the onboard computer halts the train.
@adal0323 but judging by the lack of passengers on the train or near a door, it must have been the train or someone just deliberately doing it for the filmer just to get the shot as the only time the 92TS stop like that is during rush hour due to the carriage being packed
If you don't know (but I think that you know),the Waterloo & City line was one of Network Southeast (National Rail) lines. The 1992 tube was the Class 482.

For the train to start moving, the driver needs to press and hold 2 ATO Start buttons, They need to be held for 3 seconds. m
If they are not held in for this amount of time or are pressed in sync, then the train will emergency brake.

It's not really the ATO 'failing' so I wouldnt say that.
More like the ATO doing its job.
luerexbob 2 years ago
But the train was quite empty and it doesn't look like anyone was leaning on the doors.....

Why did the train fail?
timosebi2 2 years ago
Because the ATO failed as the train was departing. It then restarted.

it could also be that the driver pressed the ATO start buttons to quickly. when that happens, the train often automatically springs to a halt

Oh right! I didn't know about the 1992ts, but I did know about the Class 483 (1938ts) on the Island Line. Thanks for that!

It could be a signal problem or a train could be up ahead. Is this going to Ealing Broadway or Epping
jack253 2 years ago
I've no idea about where it's going, sorry, but thanks for the info!
TrainBusJaguar 2 years ago
its a hard one to tell which way it going, probably Eastbound due to the lack of screeching as it banks round the bend at Bank Station

What's the ato, please?
TrainBusJaguar 3 years ago
ATO - Automatic train operation. The central line is mostly ran by computers.

Thanks, was wondering that!

It happens when people lean on the doors; the doors open slightly and the trains motors cut off.
Edwiness 3 years ago
Oh right, ta!

in melbourne (australia) people hold the doors so the train wont go with out a friend brother or whateva and it delays the train for ages
LigisdAodSmg 3 years ago 11
Yes, that happens here too. What does it have to do with my post?
