  • Well I love zak George except for that 1 video of his. That is completely wrong. He is not half bad trainer tho :)

  • hey kikopup i think you are awsome, another dog whisperer. i live in ireland have two beautiful dogs.

  • can you please teach how to do potty ... my dog is 2 month old and she poop everywhere she want.. except not on bed...

  • Thanks my dog is starting to get it.

  • it took 3mn for our Pepper (who LOVES treats) to get it and do it. Thanks u r brilliant!

  • dam girl u tlk for a while but thankxzs foor the tips they really work on my dog thankxzs again

  • great ideas and advice! Thnak you.

  • Emily, I just went to see Zakgeorge's video you've mentioned here.......WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? He should have dealt with my last dog...his hands would've been missing, I swear. How did he grab that dog like that? He's a dog damn it...people would slap or beat the hell out of him if he'd try that grab :S>...You and Tab are the most amazing trainers....thank you so much for your videos and hard work!

    Love from Albania

  • You are a great trainer! I am going to train my chi puppy using all of your videos. Do you have any "teach my pup how to dance" videos? I would like to train him how to dance...so cute. Anyway my pup is 10 weeks old and I started training him last night, within five minutes of using the techniques in your sit video he got it! We are now working on laying down. Thanks a bunch :)

  • Dear Kikopup, I love your spirit and dog-training approach and have been watching the videos for the past few days. I am wondering if I can write to you about my 11-month black lab "Kyra" who was 9 when we got her from a shelter. She is extremely intelligent, very fast, and a great swimmer, climber and hunter (field mice and a duckling, unfortunately). She is affectionate but so hyper-active that training her is very challenging. My address is duncan59@gmail.com. Thank you! Do you have a site?

  • i had a border collie/aussie mix...his name was keeko. sadly he passed away last year...but we have a new aussie mix named bowie. she's 8 months and was an outside dog with limited human interaction. we are working on her and will be following your videos to train her! thank you for all the time you put into these because after all the research that we've done online, these are by far the ones that i can actually follow with zero guilt. :) thank you!

  • Is your dog an Aussie, or a border collie? Or a mix between the two? lol

  • What is this song?

  • I love the video. The cutest part was when Splash was doing tricks while you were talking to The camera. I'm getting an Aussie preferably blue Merle. Female. Any name suggestions? I was thinking Holly since I really like the name but was hoping for some suggestions.

  • hÊy_I_feEl_sÒ_lÔNëly_t0ÐÁY

  • Thank you so much for being against punishment training :)

  • The song sounds a lot like Fort Minor's "Believe Me"

  • Great job!

  • btw, what's the name of the song? loved it!

  • This training method is great and all, but the second your dog breaks stay, you're done. What if the dog had chased the hot dog? Since we can't correct the behavior, do we just let her get it? I like the strategy of just using sit and not sit-stay, but there has to be some corrective method if the dog breaks stay. I think I'll use the general strategy here, but I have no choice but to use the Zak George corrective method if she breaks stay. Good video overall though.

  • When you are 45 and you have a whole life of training behind you. You will look back on this video and say... "Wow, have I ever changed!" Young trainers discover the clicker and they fall in love. They jump into the method 'hand over click' and mistake dog 'action' for dog 'behavior'. As I said in another post, the great Ian Dunbar has seen this mistake in training and he is now speaking about it. Too much food, not enough soul = a dog that has lost its culture. That said, better this than pain

  • What dog are you teaching? b/c a Shiba Inu male will always Challenge you as Alpha... no matter how well trained.. So It would be safe to say that Different breeds need different tactics.. btw I'd like to see you do that w/ a dog that's not trained...

  • Good video, good training and beautiful coacher

  • Good video, good training and beautiful coacher

  • QUESTION: when you train a dog you train him without saying the command he is doing. how is it, when the dog learns the command, he suddenly does what you want him to do by telling him by word?

  • @noobtubeinvader

after your dog is reliably doing the trick/task, then you start adding the word, usually after you've worked most of any luring out. you say the word right when the dog is doing it - right before the click. once the dog understands/makes the connection between the word/action then you would raise the criteria to only getting c/t when the cue/word is issued. ( i.e. not the dog deciding when he/she wants to do it, but waiting for the cue, then executing)

  • Thanks for getting out the word that no need for intimidation or punishment. Though I hope you might now recognize that the clicker is just a tool...you can bombproof same thing with emotional training- still reinforcement- just not using a clicker...same principles of "reward/no reward" or ignore unwanted behaviors...Alot of us train successfully without clickers now....clicker tool was developed for marine animals that you can scratch under the chin or treat like we can our pet dogs.

  • i hate this

  • Emily you are great at training , I am using all you tips on my puppy (spoodle) that I got yesterday . Can you make a video about the first night home and the first things that you teach yourself .

    Well done

  • Camstatic, that sounds like confusion, go back to one at a time behaviors and get it really stable, remember to slow it waaay down and breathe yourself like a zen master gone wild....take one dog at a time, low distraction and back to basics = the fundamentals of sit, stay down just take a week each and reinforce so they can TRUST your teaching again :) this happens a lot but it really sounds like confusion to me.

  • My dogs are very high-energy/easily stressed dogs, and whenever I train them they seem to be very out of focus and will soon do all the tricks in the book if they don't understand the new thing I'm trying to teach them. '

If I tried the first step, with throwing the hot dog like you did, they would be running even before the hot dog touched the ground.

    What do I do here?

  • ... O.o

  • how do you go about reinforcing a stay out of site?

  • dog on ur dholdersis using common signals

  • why don't u use a large dog like a german shephard

  • thx for the help your really good

  • you are so hot and smart...

  • My previous comment was for JiveDadson, but it didn't seem to show up that way!

  • i just started clicker training.

my dog already knew how to sit, stay, & come on command. with a treat.

but now i'm trying clicker training because i've come across a lot of issues i can't fix with treat training.

but my dog still dosn't understand she can't get up without me ssaying she can.

    she gets up whenever.

what do you do when they do that ?

just ignore and try again ?

  • I have been working with my puppy using these same techniques. I have a boxer/lab mix and when we brought him home he was 5 weeks old. In less than a day (really just a few minutes) we had him sit on command. The key is finding a high value reinforcement/treats they like. Thanks for the video!

  • Animals are easy to train it is people that are difficult. Lots of love and take the time to build a report. We had a Schnauzer that would growl at anyone other than us that tried to move her.

  • But still u are a noob, Zakgeorge is much beter!

  • @Pepsikerbosko wtf are u talking about? shes great!

  • Great advice. Thanks. I like it how she does those other tricks in the garden while you are talking just because of the movement of your hands. Well trained :)

  • Interesting,,... thank you! will try tomarrow :)

  • tie the hot dog to a string, you'll never be faster than a dog chasing a hot dog.

  • Ur awsome!!!

  • this is very interesting,Nice job. I need some answers, question is,when is "the" right time to start training your dog,and can this be done without clicker ? Thanks.

  • Great Video, thank you. My question is how do you correct when they break the sit (stay) command?

  • @lalaw2153 You don't correct. If they break the sit, it is because it was too long for them or distraction was too great at the time. Sometimes humans try to push a little too far because they do so well. We want to know how far they can go. It's a natural thing for us.

If the distraction level is down then duration can go up. I wouldn't ask my dog to hold a 20 min sit while there is deer around, in the beginning. You have to build up to using both duration and distraction at the same time.

  • @bloodashenfire Thank you so much for the great info...I want to do right in training her. Take care.

  • i love your videos! i wish that you could make a series on tv like the dogwhisperer or "its me or the dog" with your technique because i think it would teach alot of people that you don't need to punish your dog to train them.

  • 0:23 dog sleep on arm ooo so cute xD

  • Help!! I went buy a clicker and try out the clicker training but my dog freak out of the "click" sound, He wont even eat the treat first introduce the clicker sound. What should I do?

  • Did you use 'Zoundz' this time?;) Think I recognised the strings.

  • Hi,

I love your videos, I like some of them more than Zak George's.

My question is, with your technique, do you actually say "Stay" or just the "sit" or "down" commands?

    Thank you,

    Dave

  • @dvae74123 "Sit" and "Down" imply "Stay," so adding the stay-cue only confuses things. Instead you need a release-cue. I use "Okay," in a high pitched voice, but I think other cues that imply moving are acceptable also, like "Let's go," "Come here," etc... ALWAYS explicitly release the dog from a sit or stay. Never leave the dog guessing.

  • shes hot lol

  • Quick question there, what's the difference between a "sit" and then "release", and a "stay" and then "release", if both need a release and both imply a "hey little puppy, please hold your place for a little bit until I say"... I'm confused.

  • @slashfoo To paraphrase Yoda, "There is no stay; There is only sit."

  • @slashfoo "Sit" means, "Keep your butt on the ground exactly where you are." Some people use "stay" to mean "Do whatever you want to do, as long as you do it where you are." It's sort of like "At ease," in the military.

  • Interesting. I was also wondering about her not using the stay command. I've never used a release word with sit or down because it usually is leading up to another behavior, like tricks that we're learning. I"ve been using "stay" for when I walk away from her and then either call her to me or go back to her, then use the release word. Do you think the "stay" cue is not needed? I'm pretty much a novice so would love to hear how other people are doing it!

  • @brockpfeif "Stay" is not needed as an adjunct to "sit." See my latest video. It shows Dexter and Zoot sitting while I walk away, then turn and look at them. The only cue I gave was "Sit."

  • i know i will say a stupid thing and it's not about dogs but what the heck...i love your hair!!!

  • I really enjoy your channel. Your videos have really helped me understand a bit more about the behaviour of my dog. Good job i discovered your channel before i made to many mistakes training my dog. Thank you for posting these videos:)

  • u dont like Zakgorge? :o

  • @iiHorseFreak I was just wondering this - I think he is awesome :)

  • What type of dog is that?

  • Wow! Only 14 weeks old too :-) Thanks for showing that one does not need to shock and bully a dog into obedience.

  • excellent!

  • my dog can stay but only when I walk backwards.. :( as soon as I turn around she stand up and walks over to me

  • ty werry much! you really helped me alot : )

  • Great video! Just wondering how to release my dog from stay? He's about 2 months old and knows how to sit, but he'll stay there even if I want to release him. Thanks a lot!

  • What a great video, and channel! Thanks for posting these, they are really helping me with my new dog. :-)

  • Hi Emily, I already train the stay in positive way...but working through the error, I mean: If the dog moves he lost the reward, of course I started with easy aims to achieve for the dog, but for example in agility stay I haven´t a perfect and solid stay...

After watch your video, I decide to change something: reward for the smallest no-movement before movement happens instead of look for the error and remove the reward...And I must to say that it works ;) I didn´t videotape the stay retrain

  • This lady is pretty smart :)

Thanks for the video, I already knew how to train it but you gave me some good tips :)

  • Aww, it looked like at 8:30 she didn't know what you wanted so she started doing tricks (beg, lay down). I'm not sure if you signaled that, but it was adorable! Your dog is so well-behaved. I have that problem of "get up whenever you want" sits, but my dog's six (I've had her since she was 8 weeks), so I'd feel bad switching it up on her...

I've read training books, but none ever explained things as well as you do! Thank you so much!

  • @enchantingblackrose LOL, I thought that too - she was trying every trick in the book to see if she could figure out what Emily wanted so she could get that treat, and all she had to do was stay! So sweet :o)

  • nice ass

  • thank you for making this video! i've started giving a release command for my dog after he sits/downs and he seems to understand it more now. love your videos!

  • damn you must have the most boring dogs ever. no offense ._.

  • @kattskrall

huh? Her dogs are "boring" because they are content and happy to be "staying?"

  • 'huge hot dog' .....mmm..

  • Thanks for the theory/comparison with compulsion methods at the beginning! I think it helps people understand why they are doing what they are.

  • Is that your other dog crying in the back?

    =(

Thanx for the video. I'm trying thins tomorrow. I tought my 14 week dog how to sit and down but he doesn't stay he will just sit then get right back up.

  • Emily, thank you so much for teaching ME how to train my wonderful Border Collie... I have a question regarding something we don't see on the video (which is what happens to Skip), what do you do when the dog does get distracted.. for instance leaps and runs for the hotdog? I love what you do! Thanks again!

  • good video...but what threw me off was when kiko was on your shoulders? lol

  • I stay with my sister on the weekends

she has a pequines dog she said she's been trying to train her

the bad thing she has been doing it the wrong way, by punishing her everytime she does something wrong

now she has this little bags under her eyes.

i told my sister that i've been wanting to try the method you use. she agreed.

is there anyway those little bags under her eyes will dissapear. she is 9 months old.

  • lol my dog doesn't know how to stay, i tell her to go one place, and when i turn my back, shes in another area

  • I understand what to do if the dog stays. But what do you do if the dog goes for the treat, if your not supposed to tell it off? Do you just ignore it and begin again?

  • Great video Emily, congratulations

  • but when i throw the treat my dog just runs

  • What about for stand?

  • wait so...

you say "sit" which basically means sit and stay.

and you say "down" which means down and stay? is that right?

so when do you use "stay"?

  • You don't need to basicly that's what sit means. you sit there til where done. Then its ok to get up

  • amazing.. i never train my dog that way.. the fact is i never train her at all.. she always free to do what she want to do becoz i never know how to train her and i never have the heart to punish her.. T-T

wish i could train her that good..

  • @snowpheony You CAN train her. im not trying to judge, but dont feel sad or pitty yourself about "not being able to train her". and you don't have to punish her in a way that harms her. think about it, if you take the time and authority to train her, you will be able to take her in public and do more with her and she will have a better quality of life. its not about punishing them, its about being the leader. the woman in these videos uses VERY mild forms of punishment that dont harm the dog.

  • really? my dog is already 8 years old.. can i still train her??

  • Of course you can!! No dog is ever too old to learn!!

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you!!! Fantastic vid!

  • people that punish their dogs with hitting are just flat out lazy. take the time to actually train your dog the right way!

  • jackass

  • Um... just because I believe that animals don't deserve to be hit makes me a jackass?

Thanks for your opinion though. Nobody cares.

  • What the hell? I think this comment was intended for someone else, I don't even remember making it sorry.

I agree with you in the matter.

  • lol sorry than ^_^

I hardly remember the convo ether SORRY! <3

  • omg thats unbelieveable

  • Ok. Your dog obviously is already trained to sit until you release her and you have made it clear what not to do if she gets up but you haven't demonstrated what to do if the dog goes after the hot dog. I'm assuming you just ignore bad/unwanted behavior and try to get the hot dog before she has a chance (to reward herself by eating it)? It's hard to learn from your videosbecause you're not actually working with an untrained dog. She does everything right so all we see is you rewarding her.

  • I completely agree. It would be more helpful if you actually showed an exercise with a dog that behaves like a real untrained dog.

  • the whole point though is to not let your dog fail - if your dog is failing you have went too far too fast. if your dog is harder i would have a leash on the dog - you cannot let the dog get the hotdog under any circumstance. have someone help you to guard the hotdog.

  • I think she just wants to show people the basics and show that it CAN be done. It may not show all facets of the training, but it does introduce someone to a general first approach.

  • But, I do agree with you, that it'd be even more helpful to see an UNtrained dog being trained this way.

  • Yea she did...she said to ignore her.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for your wonderfully humane method.

I dont know why Zack George would use anything else than this method.

Keep up the great work you are doing.

  • Adipatus, my guess would be that not every trainer does best with one certain way, and not every dog does best with one certain way. Some dogs do best with positive/clicker training, and others truly respond better to other forms of training. It's completely individual, although I'd agree that MOST animals do best with positive reinforcement.

  • I had subscribed to he who will remain nameless and after seeing this video, am UNsubscribing him. Your methods are SO much better. TG I hadn't used his way yet.

  • I love the song in this video!

  • Im still curious to know if Zak George USED to be a punishment based trainer

  • why?

  • Would you eventually cease using the clicker or do you expect all dog owners to always have a clicker when with their dog?

  • I completely agree with punishment based training is ridiculous and uncalled for. I trained my Border pup now 15 weeks to stay completely through shaping. We have not even added a word to her action, i simply ask her to stop (which is her drop command) and that means do not move until i release you. I can guarantee she will not move, i have not yet found a distraction she will break a stay for and she's only 3 months. But great method of training anyway!

  • this is very good, a little too good. KINDA HARD ACTUALLY.

  • Nice video! This is exactly how I would begin adding distractions into a "Stay".. I do however agree that special treats should only be used if you're diong something new or in a highly distracting area. I'm guessing that's what she meant though, since this is a "how-to" video, then she suggests high value reinforcers because this is a new behavior.

  • I don't think you're right about the 'kibble stays'

My puppy only gets special treats when he's in a high distraction area, or learning something new. Otherwise it's just kibble, and he's has a better stay than most fully grown dogs.

  • I have a question...Your videos have inspired me but...I have 2 pugs that are "older" 9 and 10. They are very active and ornery! Can a person teach an old dog new tricks?

  • Great love the new video, I taught my now 18 month old Splash this as a pup from the old video and her stay is awesome. In agility training I can leave her in a down stay amongst all the other dogs and distractions, and go walk the course, so useful, also her WAIT is great which I think is much easier to train when you have a good STAY.

  • Amazing!!!Great job!

  • there are 3 stages of training...1st teaching...2nd correction...and is3rds testing and

is proofing....i read the same book.

Question..do all dogs respond the same way to training.

Question #2 can you show your way with dogs that are not yours

  • you are going to make me get back into dog training....I used to tell people dont come to me unless you have been to another trainer....and what you did...did not work in real life

  • 1:42 WTF?

  • lol the dog is taking a shit

  • for the first time i say yes......what you said is right

  • it is the best thing in the world when they understand.....u a r a yng traner

  • Como siempre, ¡¡Muy bien!!

    Saludos desde España.

  • How soon can a dog go from learning one thing to another? I feel like I'm overwhelming Kali by trying to teach her "Leave it", "Sit" and proper manners on a leash ("Let's go") all in the same span of time (past week +)...

And then passively she's also working on being housebroken though she's 4 mo.~ old right now, she's mostly done but still has mistakes now and then. We have a jingly bell on the door "outside" POTTY ONLY! and we say "inside" afterward to go to the door. Too much too soon?

  • i got present problem with my dog. it pee inside our house. how can i teach him pee outside? many thanks for your help.

  • okay, ic. start w/good sit prior to proofing and use leash just in case...thx again

  • Wonderful video. Thanks for posting this again with audio.

  • u r awesome. thanks 4 all ur vids.

wut do u do if dog breaks their stay during proofing, goes for (and obtains) the 'distraction' treat for instance? haven't they just been rewarded for breaking sit?

  • Still great.

    jg

  • thanks for posting al those nice video

i have a australian shepherd of 14 weeks now and gonna start going to a dog training school.

im a noob when it comes to training(my first dog) but your vodeos sure will help out.

  • Hey emily thanks for the great video.

if my dog looks at the distraction but remains staying, can i click or wait for him to not look at it?

  • Thanks for re-releasing. Don't worry about the editing. It is much more important to have the video as it is instead of a perfectly edited one. This fixed one thing for me that I had a problem with. I did not know how to encourage the dog to keep sitting until released. After just a few hours practicing she now sits no matter how much food i throw at her. Thanks.

  • hahah, I understand the frustration at the incorrect training...I still cringe at videos of people clicking a zillion times with no reward and saying sitsitsitsit..., glad there are so many CORRECT clicker vids on youtube now especially yours...which are awesome! five stars.

  • great vid i learnd alot and since i just got a Labrador puppy this was very helpfull

  • Simply wonderful. Thanks for this video Emily!

  • Love ur login name ^^

  • Hey amazing videos I watched them for at least 2 hours last night. Just amazed at your training. I had a question about what treats you use for your dog. Thanks for the help.

  • Great video,

I began training my dog to sit by giving the cue and then clicking and throwing a treat for her. Now she sits, but gets up immeadiately.

  • Pay attention to the video. Start clicking and rewarding while she sits. Give many clicks and rewards for just sitting a short while and never reward when she gets up without the release command. Always end the sit with a release command. After a few hours she will learn.

In the beginning my dog also jumped straight back up, but she soon got the point when I clicked her for just sitting.

  • Fantastic technique! Thank you so much for sharing this! YOU should be the one with the new Animal Planet show and not zakgeorge (sorry zakgeorge, but it's true)!

  • thks its a super video, when i think I know how to do it, I find some details to cover, I will use with Romy!!!

  • awesome awesome awesome :)

You can use this too for them running to the door too right :)

  • whats the music in the beginning?

  • the song is call "Believe Me" by Fort Minor

  • actually I made the music on the program Garage Band :) Glad it seemed professional. I also used my song on the last video I made, cause I was too lazy to make another song.

  • @kikopup Lazy? You dog train, volunteer, paint, make videos, and create music (and presumably you also manage to fit in 'everyday life' stuff too). If you think that's lazy I want you to come and train ~me~, LOL!

  • Awesome! I have been waiting for the re-upload. Thanks so much! lots of great information and demostration. I am excited to get working on this with my puppies.

  • Excellent vid.

  • Hola!!

    Emily!!

Cada vez que veo este video Aprendo algo nuevo para enseñar a mis "Niñas"

    GRACIAS!!!

  • yay. my favorite living fur collar

  • so should you say "no" if they get up?

  • if the dog gets up before you release him, you probably raised criteria too fast too soon. go back to shorter stay duration and keep practicing, set him up for success!

if you refrain from saying "no" then you allow the dog to figure out for himself what will earn him the reward (sitting until you release)

  • 1:42

LOL I love that dog. XDD

  • This is the best bomb-proof stay video I've ever seen! It covers every aspect as to how to build that rock solid foundation through reinforcement. Thanks so much for taking the time to re-upload this for everyone, it's really appreciated!! I've given it the highest rating and will be sure to share this video with many! -Zander and Brittany

  • I remember this video!!! Love it!

  • I haven't seen this one before but it is great!! It's so stupid how Youtube takes away sound. :@ Thank you for posting.

    Hayley & Indi

  • I didn't notice you took it down, this is my favorite stay video.

  • 5* and a fav! Love it! I am proofing Kaine with difficult distractions right now. We even had a strange dog walk up close to him and behind him and he stayed:).

    Happy Clicking!

    Ashley & Kaine

  • Yay! Thanks so much for putting this back up!

  • Excellent video! Helpful. Thank you.

  • So glad to finally be able to see this video, it rocks! Very timely, considering I have a puppy (10mo) without sit or down on cue at all yet-- she really needs an automatic stay and this method is awesome.

  • I always loved this video, great to see it back up! stupid youtube removing the sound!!!! hehe! Oh and I like the slightly ranting qualities of your older videos!

  • Awesome idea!

I've been working on stay with Pixel. She's quite a hyper puppy, so the slightest distraction will keep her from training. I'm going to take your tips into mind as I continue to improve her own stay.

  • Thanks for reposting. I've been looking forward to it.

I especially like the idea to have both sit and down to have stay included in them it makes so much sense I don't know why everyone always treats them as separate.

    Looking forward to what's next
