It may have had a better quality of football (although i think it didn't), the A-league has promoted the game in Australia. The A-league has gets way bigger crowds, and gets much more publicity. I remember going to watch the NSL with only 800-900 other spectators! How the hell was it even considered a proffesional league?
Of course the NSL was shit off the park. The governing body didn't care about it at all, the media didn't, channel 7 bought the rights to black out the game from the TV, etc etc. NSL clubs survived with NO help from ANYONE, and most times got more of a crowd then some A-League games!!! Reform HAD to happen, but NOT the way it currently has!
There were some clubs that absolutely failed to take off with any kind of professionalism but don't forget the A League has had money tipped in from a number of different bodies including the Federal Govt through its grants to the FFA. As the competition attempts to expand watch fringe clubs' crowds dwindle.
There was always a core of 5 or 6 clubs that held together on and off field - South, Olympic, Syd Utd, Melb Knights, Perth Glory, Marconi.
