  • This game sounds like a car-alarm when it introduces each level.

  • I remember playing this game in the Arcades with the rotating ball control. Classic 80's!! Right up there with Asteroids and Pac Man.

  • You cannot win Missile Command. It's a statement about the futility of nuclear war and the creator had nightmares about his own game for a long time.

  • I miss the little mushroom cloud animation on the 2600 version when your city gets exploded

  • AVGN did not have kind words for the Atari 5200 track ball.

  • I wish they'd remake Missile Command on a 64-bit console. :(

  • @dogeymon83 they did, on the Atari Jaguar!

  • Yeah just a random heads up Mark (that I'm sure you wont see anyway) most of these exact same games are indeed available as Atari 400/800 (etc.) carts.

And BTW, if you ever actually do get around to 'tracking' down that track-ball... make sure to swap the cue-ball out for an 8-ball or 9-ball, like I did back in the day. ;)

  • when im 14 i play this at gameboy while crapping ...... thats why everytime i unload it took me an hour to finish ! .....oh yeah THE GOOD TIMES !

  • It's always nice to see people arguing about grammar and spelling on youtube. Just watch the damn video.

  • They're making a movie based on this game. I'm not kidding.

  • Were all the 5200 games exact ports of Atari 8-bit computer cartridges??

  • Many of my favorite 1980s arcade games had unusual controllers that added to the game. Missile Command is certainly among the best.

I also loved Atari's Lunar Lander from 1979 with its great throttle-controller (which was hard to find even in the 1980s) BattleZone, Red Barron, Tempest, and Robotron. Also interesting was Frontline and later Ikari Warriors which each included rotating controllers to allow aiming one direction while moving another.

  • ou heard it, its not good for the environment :D

  • i like. its just like the 8bit

  • This games rocks with the trackball (if you can find one that works)

I use old 15 pin PCjoysticks with an adapter with my 5200

  • 5200 had a trackball?

great game on the VCS. Impossible to win of course, but great fun

  • I did not like the single missile base but the graphics were good on the 5200. I play MC on MAME quite often and you can setup the "A" "D" and "V" keys just like the arcade machine was so your fingers rest on the fire buttons for all three missile bases.

  • When I was a kid I was scared of Missile Command. There were something incredibly depressing about nuclear holocaust.

These days it's tremendous fun in games like Fallout 3 and STALKER etc.

  • I find it interesting that the controller has four fire buttons. Yet, the game kept the single missile base approach from the 2600 over the arcade's Alpha/Beta/Delta silo base design.

  • Atari would have been better off if they just designed a different outer shell for the 400 or 800 computer system. The XEGS is a great example, but years too late.

  • @cryinglion Well, that's exactly what they did with the 5200, aside from an expansion port for a Laserdisc add-on (never released) the extra lines on the cart slot for the 2600 adapter, and the different controllers and lack of a keyboard, the 5200 is hardware identical to the 400/800.

  • cold war much

  • Most of my favorite games are from Super Nintendo and PS1 except for Diablo 2 and Super Smash Brothers Melee

  • Diablo 2 > ALL!

  • had this for XE built in but mine had more 7800 like graphics. still great! 8)

  • Neat I have this game coming. Recently picked up a Atari 5200 with 6 games for $15 but of course it had a broken controller. Ordered a couple of rebuilt ones off the net and they seem to work good.

Any chance you have Keystone Kaper for Atari 5200 you could review?

  • On the terminator 2 movie theres one part where Jonh Connor is playing on a Missle Comand arcade. :)

  • I just wish the trackball glowed like the one on the game Crystal Castles.

  • And most of the 5200 versions were also available for the Ataris 400 and 800, which used the standard Atari controller plus keyboard. I had this exact version of Missile Command for our old 400 and it worked great.

  • Did you know that the 5200 was based off the 400 and 800 computers just with more memory and other slight changes.

  • Yeah, although I only learned that just by looking at the actual software for the 5200. I recognized most of the games being played, but they sometimes had tweaked features. It showed that it came out later, but was running pretty much the same hardware.

  • This game is endlessly fun. Smart bombs are a pain, though :)

  • I play missile commando on the computer with a mouse. It actually works fairly well. I'm tempted to buy a trackball mouse solely for it.

  • Though I have the controller (CX-22 and CX-80) and the Atari 400 version (same game), I have to say that the Trak-Ball makes it worth owning for games like this and Centipede.

In fact, if you play Centipede with the Trak-Ball on the 5200, it's as close as you can get to the arcade machine.

  • We need a review for Countermeasure.

  • Missile command was one of the best

  • The old games just get faster and harder until you die, just like life.

  • i hate missle command =/

    i'd prefer defender xD

  • in this game you never win so is beter to not play

i was 10 years old when i play this game

on that time was atari with the 100 game inside the consol but was boring.

  • If you were born in 1978 then you seriously need to learn how to type. I'm 13 and look at me.

    Just sayin'.

  • dos i t reelyy matar hwo we tope i mean its thee internet get a fucking life

  • @TenguGuy cus the're lazy

  • @TenguGuy oooh fancy using grammar... if your 13 you should sure as hell know grammar is for school only... it honestly has no use if your getting your point across...

  • @Polaf3456 I'm sure if you think that, everyone must think you are a real genius.

Seriously, nobody takes you seriously if you can't use proper grammar.

  • @TenguGuy I'm 14, and there are 20 year-olds typing like it's their first time.

  • I'm thinking of buying a 7800, and know it's backwards compatible with the 2600, but is it backwards compatible with 5200 games?

  • Nope.

  • *emo tear*

  • Sorry. Also it's not compatible with SOME 2600 games. Certain cartridges will not fit.

  • no it isnt backward compatible with 5200 games

  • Not with 5200 games but that would have been cool since it's just the better version of that. It's like the slimmer PS2 can't play regular playstation 2 games people .

  • they could have upped the graphics a bit. it looks a lot like the 2600 version. still love the 5200 though!

  • lol. the track ball your talking about is way better than the o.g. control. but its as big as the system its self.

  • No, it's not as big as the console, but it's as big as an NES.

  • i love this game

  • This was one of my favorite games.

  • Ive got this game on retro atari classics for the d.s

    its a really cool game

  • I had an equivalent or better experience playing this game on my atari XE back in the day. the controller was much better for the atari xe as well.

  • i love misslel command i used 2 have it 4 pc it had better graphics on the pc but the gameplay was still alike 2 Atari 5200

  • space dungeon! please!

  • You really NEED a 5200 Trak Ball, it's the finest Trak Ball controller ever made.

  • Is that the one that is as big as a NES?

  • At least as big as a NES! It's got a full size ball, dual keypads and sets of buttons. It's a beast!

  • I saw it on AVGN,it is so big.:)

  • the legend of zelda the ocarina of time is the best game ever created

  • pause at 1:05 look at top left and it's pacman

  • stop those bitches from irradiating on you LOLed so hard

  • Is Peggle one of your favorites? :D

  • Comment removed

  • Whats the diffrencde between Ms.Pacman and regular Pacman?

  • @thespider1409

Ms. Pacman has a cute thingy on her head.

Lol jk jk xD i am not shure actualy

  • Ms. Pacman has an ever-changing layout for the stages I think...

Pacman has the same set up each round.

  • Out of the park question...have you seen the Nyko Classic Trackball controller for the PS1? and looked into the old Atari/Midway/Williams compulation CDs? just wondering thanks!

  • lol i remember when this was in the arcades.

  • I play this with the 5200 Track Ball--- It's a must for this game :)

Definetly Track down a Track Ball--it's awesome with Centipede.

Your 5200 joysticks looks/sounds like it is in desperate need of rebuilding. In your case, the poteniometers need to be cleaned or replaced.

  • It's worth getting. Plus Centipede also supports it as well. Also, I've played this on my 400 with the trackball (hit Control-T). It's worth it on both systems.

  • I played a PC version of this game back oh 1997 1998. Great game.

  • i had a version of this on the pc at one time... i wonder where that game disk went its a really addicting game

  • dude I freakin LOVE your online reviews... the fact that you are so old school and can appreciate these older games makes your reviews so dang sweet... just so you know... heh

  • yep

  • 5200 track ball is bad news =]

  • Missile Command during an earthquake....LMAO!!!!

    Great review!!! :)

  • Missle Command is a rad game. I didn't play it a ton, but it was one of the most popular games at the time.

  • john connor played this in Terminator 2 lol

  • yeah this game is fun, I have it for the 2600

  • That would be perfect on the Wii.

  • Yeah. It would be cool if they remade it and released it on WiiWare.

  • Oh gosh the AVGN's 5200 trackball controller didn't turn out too well.

  • You love Missile Command that much huh? Well if you go to ebay and type in Missile Command, select Collectibles. One of the top things should be a Missile Command arcade machine, current bidding is $405 with a Buy It Now option of $700 plus freight shipping of course. Not mine, not bidding but I thought you'd like to know. There's three days left on it. Happy hunting!

  • the Angry Video Game Nerd has a trackball controller and which doesn't work :(

  • are you from sweden?

  • this game and its other versions,, never grow old

  • Don't forget the nicely positioned 3 buttons in the arcade to launch from the left, center, or right (didn't they flash?). You would think the 5200 could have used the phone key-pad for that.

You're right, the sounds are dead on! Hate those GD smart bombs!

This would be a lot better with the trackball. It's like Starhawk on the Vectrex--ugh!

  • Fallout 3 begins at the end of missile command. :)

  • true.

  • lol, really?!? XD

  • @gtssage well, technically fallout 1 would, as fallout 3 is canon to the first 2 >_>

  • mcflurries are good

  • Damn, the explosions look good in this game.

  • Some cop is scoping for you, dude!

  • While I like the atari reviews. Could we see some other "old school" systems too? Like Intellivision, N64, Dreamcast, or Genesis?

  • fuck yea, 1982. That when i still had an atari. the snes was something i had to have and ultimately let to the selling of my 2600

  • COOL

  • oh yeah i remember this game

  • Play it with M.A.M.E. you can use the mouse

  • i play on a plug n play atarti thing XD

  • i play it in Atari 2600

    great game

  • I love your idea of a happy ending for this game.

  • was this what john connor was playing on terminator 2 lol

  • Yep. This is what he plays in the movie.

  • How did you get a 5200 working?

  • it's not the console that's hard to get working, it's the unreliable controllers

  • srrry i meant the controllers

  • lol my dad exposed this game to me and i remember when to XD. He got it for me for the PS1 and I was like oh my god this is great!!!!! I love this game

  • Thanks for the 5200s reviews!

  • I like milk.

  • lol so random

  • I used to play this on the 2600 with the track ball. I agree, it's awesome.

  • lol stop those bitches

  • Awesome game!

  • 1) Get either a Wico stick or a rebuilt 5200 from Best. Your opinion of the 5200 will go up dramatically

    2) Get the trackball. It is perfection (much better than the Colecovision trackball). Centipede (and the unreleased Millipede) on the 5200 is a religious experience.

  • I love the crisp 1080p graphics. A thing of sheer beauty!

  • I don't know if you heard, but I thought that you might enjoy touch screen missle command. I think that this would be one hell of a version to review. Check it out: watch?v=fwZ2Oe6hOxo . It's probably cheating, but cool none the less.

  • Wait Mark, if your 7800 plays 5200 cartridges, then why exactly did you buy the 5200 console?

  • 7800 plays 7800 games and 2600 games not 5200

  • The 7800 only plays 2600 and 7800 games.

  • Actually, I think there is an ending. I saw in in Terminator 2.

  • That's what it says when you die!

  • XD No shit!

  • there was an adapter so you can play 2600 games on the 5200

  • wasn't there an adapter for the 7800 that let you play 5200 games. if not than the 7800 is like the PS3, able to play PS2 games but not PS2

  • there is no adaptor to paly 5200

  • 2 player doesn't work!

  • When i first clicked on this video, I saw Missile Command and i was immediately said "oh cool" and then i saw ATari 5200 next to it... and then i said "ut ohh...." lol

  • You know that this game was created by morbidly Greek men!

  • Got to admit that the Controller was ahead of its time with its joystick, because its analog (before PS1's Dual Shock)

  • i have a game called "MAD" on the 2600 its the same thing but i cant stand the controls

  • ahh, i remember the trackball. it was pretty cool, but waaaay too big (slightly bigger than an NES) and it's impossible to find one that's working.

  • ya it is bigger ( avgn)

  • Mine works great. No problems.

  • This question may be a common one (if you don't want to answer it, you don't have to) but, is this your job? Playing video games? That's the jackpot for any video gamer!

  • i remember playing this atmy friends slumber party damn good times

  • Can't wait till the HUUGE touch-screen missile command 2-player machine comes out to the masses. I think I will save up some money, and buy it sometime.

  • Excellent game but again, I have the Atari XL/XE version and I use the Atari Trackball. Missile Command with a trackball is by far the best way to play. I couldn't imagine playing this with a 5200 joystick.

  • wyth the trackball is easyer than the joystick and cooler

  • Awesome! Your videos never get old!

  • Another great review. Too bad the 5200 controller is so wonky...this is a really great looking, and sounding version of Missile Command.

  • Awesome 5/5

I just bought another Atari 7800 on ebay for £6.00! with the european controllers and all connections!

  • Nice review

  • Win

  • also it would be awesome if they made a remake on th Wii

would be cool with the nunchucks

  • y would u use the nunchuck?

  • Great Review!

  • third just watching right now but i know its going to b good i have it too so i will just rate 5 now XD

  • cool review i had the game as well 5 stars

    thank you for sharing
