This explains Pakistan's overzealous support (and instigation) of first the Mujahideen and later the Taliban: they were afraid to lose all the Pashtun lands that Britain had arbitrarily given to them through the Durand line. Imagine if the Mujahideen had not revolted against the Soviets - Afghanistan might have been able to gain back all those lands with the help of the Soviets. The people they thought were their friends hurt them much more in the end than their perceived enemy at the time.
