@EASTWOODO4 Look for codes. Assuming we have fluid then the hydraulic pump is the most likely cause. Even with no power feed to the transmission, you should still be able to drive in 2nd gear. A complete no go points to a possible hydraulic pump. Good luck.
my brothers 01 focus was going down the road and seemed to just go into neutral.now it doesnt move in any gears.if i put it in neutral it will roll.any suggestions?
I have a Skoda Octavia which has a VW 09G transmission. When warming up it shifts fine but after driving for about 30 mins or so, I get jerky shifts from 2nd into 3rd and sometimes 4th down to 3rd. There are slight jerks from 4th into 5th. I've been told it is the valve body. Is this so or not and could it be the shift solenoid or a temperature sensor since it works normal if I turn of and let it cool down for a while.
@dIna4D Hi, OK nice description. First, scan the vehicle for codes. Is the check0engine light ON? Yes, whoever said that about the valve body may be right. The valve body warps when hot then goes back to normal when cold. But, this is a long shot. A proper diagnostic procedure should be done before condemning the VB. Post back with more details if possible. Good luck.
@ADPTraining Thanks for the response. The CEL isn't on and there are no codes after running the ODB2 diagnostic with a VAGCOM. Can the shift solenoid become clogged/partially clogged without a code being generated? wrt that...I changed the transmission fluid at 108,000 km and it is now 142,000 km; the manual recommends every 60,000km. Also, can the VB and shift solenoids be repaired as these parts are very expensive? Thanks.
@dIna4D OK, be careful there.... IMPORTANT. You should also scan the vehicle with a regular OBD-2 scanner or its European counterpart (I think you're in the EU). This is why, lots of manufacturers make a separation between OEM (factory) and OBD2 and DTC or codes that show on the OBD-2 side will not show up on the OEM (VagCom) side. Try and scan with cheap code reader.
No, these parts can be cleaned but not repaired. You may get them at your local yard, if available to save money. Good luck.
i have a 99 infiniti i30 my problem was that the car would not sit on park even though it said it on the shifter the car would also not start, i check underneath the transmission and found out the lever wasnt pointing up as park i manually set it car started right away but now having problem switching gears, so i let it idle on emergency brakes went under the car once again i manually shift the lever and it goes through the gears....So tell me, could it be bad cable or bad lever...thanks!!!!!!!!
@ryanzwife1989 Absolutely, either-or. A bad cable or shift mechanism inside the car. This is very straight forward, but you'll have to do some disassembly. Post back with year make and model to give you more direct answers. Good luck.
my daughters 1998 infiniti i30 auto trans has no response when shifting into any gear or reverse. I followed shift cable & its attached and moves linkage at the trans but car will not move. Ran fine the last time she drove it. The next morning car would not move. Getting no CEL.Fluid looks & smells good. The trans just wont engage. Could this be a possible solonoid problem?
@33kbaxter No it is not. Always remember that even if the transmission electrical connector is disconnected the trans will run in second gear. This is usually the natural gear position for most trannies. You may be looking at a pump issue. Try and accelerate and making a shift. It may also be due to a clogged fluid passage, but more that likely a pump issue. Good luck.
@ADPTraining i have 1996 ford exploer that doesnt want to go in to 2nd gear well go over 35mph if i let off the gas then press again it will catch the gear and go i was told it was the shift solenoid its that true
@21mackman It is possible. 2nd gear is normally the limp-in mode gear. In case of a problem, your trans stays in 2nd to allow you to reach a repair shop. But before condemning the SS check for available power at all the solenoids. If you lost the one wire power feed to all solenoids that'll do it. Post back once you've checked that.
thanks for posting i have code PO756, on a 2003 tundra, to be honest im scared to death, to be a mechanical issue, im gona take it to a tranny shop next week. has anyone had a similar issue with this truck??
@insanekamkze86 Not necessarily. The code only points you in one possible diagnostic direction. It doesn't mean to replace the component. Check for component resistance and TCM/ECM trigger signal. Good luck.
I have a 05 corolla n after I replaced the ecm under recall it threw the p0741 code tcc solenoid performance do I need to replace the ecm again the solenoid or the torque converter dealer was like we can replace solenoid but don't know if it will be fixed bc it could be anything it shifts find but now is having problems between 50 n 65 mph when it never did n stopped twice while driving n battery has full voltage I have 86k miles so its past warranty was wondering what would need to be done thx
@insanekamkze86 Stop replacing parts. It is unlikely that the ECM is still defective. It might be the new software flash in the system. See if there's a newer re-flash for this cause. If not then follow a specific diagnostic procedure for you solenoid. good luck...
My 2005 Corolla didn't pass smog because of what the auto shop said was a "P0741 tcc solenoid performance or stuck off" code. (yes there is an engine light on) But the car runs smoothly. No transmission noises or anything....could it be that the tcc solenoid simply needs to be replaced??
@kurojin97 Good question, with the CEL on you will not pass inspection. That is the reason for the inspection program. This code points to the TCC solenoid or the torque converter itself. It means that the TCC is not operational. it is up to the repair shop to determine that.
One test is to manually turn the TCC ON with the vehicle at idle. The the torque converter is good then the engine will stall with the vehicle in DRIVE. Simple right, but you'd be amazed at how many shops don't know this
Respond to this video... CONTINUED: If it stalls then then the torque converter is fine and the TCC sol as well. So you'd concentrate on a signal issue or why the TCC is not being activated as in a broken wire, ec. Good luck to you.
i have a 2001 dodge dakota and kind a shift hard when am taking off ,and some times it feels like it dont get speed to fast and the rpms on the truck go way high ,I done the transmission oil and filter chane and still doing the same thing but there is no ligths on dash board what can it be please help me
[1998 Mits Eclipse GS 2.0L] My auto transmission was not shifting into 2nd. Some times It would work fine for 5 minutes and the problem would start again. The diagnostic scanner showed some code for the shift solenoid. The trans fluid looked good and smell right...NO BURN SMELL. The replacement part has cured the problem and the engine light has gone off as well. A person planted doubt on me telling me that the trans would die within the week. I think that only qualifies if fluid burned.
@lcvd1 Good deal, I'd love it if you posted more details on your case. It sure'll help lots of folk who read this post. Thanks again and keep posting.
okay when i drive my truck is fine but if i drive for a long distance or an hour or more when i hit first gear it jumps and then hit the gas and second gear jumps. but if i turn off the car for a minute it wont do it unless im driving a long distance again. I have a chevy silverado 1500 8cyl 5.3
I have a 02 Grand am that while im driving the speedo will bounce up and down after about 10 miles per hour. after it starts to do it the car starts to stutter like its not wanting to go i have to give it more gas to get it going...I was told it could be the shift soleniod..does this sound like it could be this.
@chrisNkathy09 No, it sounds like the VSS or vehicle speed sensor. Very easy to replace. I'm not recommending to replace it, it is just a good possibility. The SS or shift solenoid will not have any effect on the speedo or make it erratic. The VSS is always on the transmission output shaft at one of the wheels. WARNING!!! Be careful, on newer systems the VSS could be one of the front WSS or wheel speed sensors. Newer systems did away with the VSS are use one front WSS for speed detection.
@ADPTraining I went and got a New SS from auto zone...I got the old one out and went to put the new one in and it wont fit. Its the same size at the bottom but as it gets closer to the top its bigger and wont go in the hole...that and the new bracket its bigger and wont let it fit...Is it possible to not be able to use a after market SS...Would it be safe if i went and got one from a junk yard...also when i had it out it had alot of brown gunk around it so i cleaned it off and its still does it
@ADPTraining but just not as bad...I hope you can answer some of my questons and help me out cause i dont want my transmission to go out cause of it cause i was told if i drive on it to long the tranny will burn up...
@chrisNkathy09 i had same problem on my 2000 chevy venture , i left it shop to change spark plugs and wires , job was done started car no problem even driving in city NYC between trafic lights no problem ,but as soon as i go on HIGHWAY , in a min car become disabled i have to accelerate pedal to the floor to make it running and it shifts to gear 1 , even though engine works good , and thats what i found :
@chrisNkathy09 while guys was changing spark plugs they screw up VACUUM lines the one and main was disconnected right after MAF sensor some kind of INTAKE tube coming out right after MAF sensor, so engine was socking more air without of calculation tru MAF sensor, the other small tube somewhere behind engine , i put this in place make sure all intact and tide ,,,,,and since then ,,NO PROBLEMS
Hello my names nik and my 97 awd bravada doesn't go into 1st gear or 4 gear but instead starts off in second and shifts to 3rd so i only have 2 gears and HORRIBLE gas mileage was wondering if you thought it might be a shift solenoid?
@linsnik91 It looks like it's in limp-in mode. You need to scan the ECM for codes. Even if it's a separate TCM, it'll reflect on the ECM as a stored transmission code. Then you can take it from there. It's impossible to just jump into a repair without more information... Good luck and post more.
PS. Almost all town auto parts now sell cheap code readers and scanners. They all do the same thing, retrieve stored codes...
@linsnik91 I write this not knowing if your problem was fixed, but I had much the same problem, as I also have a 97 Bravada. Mine was however stuck in 3rd gear and would shift only into 4th. The scanner gave me 3 seperate codes, and I learned that it was simply a bad fuse. The fuse box on the driver side dash has a fuse called "TRANS" on it, should be a 10 Amp fuse. Possibly replacing that may help. If not, then your problem isn't as much like mine as it seems.
@ADPTraining should i jus leave it like this, or is this a fix i can do myself? because it drives well in each gear like there no delays or clicking noises, and the fluid level is OK. im pretty good wit everything else but not too experienced with the tranny, however if wht u mention is the case and i can do it myself. I'LL DO IT.
@ADPTraining i really have no problems but i have a 98 saturn sl1 and sometimes when i shift from park to drive it shifts like (THUMP)lol. Was wondering wht tht is?
@omarG19100 Check your fluid level. I know is a dumb suggestion, but it happens a lot. If level ok, then your tranny is starting the stick, either valve body or hydraulic issues. Don't do a fluid tune up. With new fluid the trans may never shift again. Good luck...
Hello,I have a 2002 lexus LS 430.It jerks going into the second. As it warms up it seems to do better.I was thinking if it has to do something with the 1-2 shift solenoid?
@rocky8267 Probably not, SS issues tend to stay pretty much the same. Some SS issues do come and go with engine or trans temperature. I won't recommend a transmission oil change. If you do that, it may never run again, and you'll a whole rebuilt. Post more with details, DTCs, etc.... Keep posting...
@ADPTraining ok thank you. Some one told me if engine is not running 100% it can effectthe shifting.I will check for the transmission DTCs and get back with you soon. Thanks again
problem with my in laws 2002 mazda 626, 4cyl, automatic tranny. When put in drive it barely moves and once it hits 20mph it will shift fine but if u come to a stop or go lower than 20mph it does the same. If I pressed the od/off button then its fine. seems like it doesnt go to 1st gear, thats why no matter how much I step on gas it will only move slowly. Did try the OBDII scanner but no code and we took it to the dealership and they said it needs an overhaul. Is this the shift solenoid issue?
@artrim1 OK, listen crefully::::: You have to be very observant and specific about this. You need to verify if your vehicle takes off in 1st or 2nd gear. If it takes off on 2nd (20 MPH seems like 2nd) gear, then the TCM is in limp-in mode. This Mazda may have a separate TCM (trans control module), so you need a scanner that can talk to the TCM. Look for codes (DTCs). Once you do that then post again. I promise will always answer all your questions. Keep posting...
@ADPTraining Thx 4 reply. What scanner do I need for the TCM? And what steps do I need to do after troobleshooting it with the scanner? I looked up limp-in mode and it does correlate to it. I called autozone if they have a scanner for TCM they said only OBDII. Thx again.
@artrim1 OK, there are a few, but they are expensive. The factory scanner will definitely cover it all, but too much. There are others that have coverage on the aftermarket side. Message me and I will help you out with some guidance. I do not mention brand names in this channel. We do not endorse anyone, that way we keep neutral. We'll be putting out a "Tool and Equipment" series in the future. Thanks for posting and keep it up...
Hi, I have a 91 chevy 1500 4x4 THM700R4 tranny. When im driving it takes high rpm before it shifts. And when i come to a stop sometimes what ever gear it was in it stays in that gear when I take off. HELP!
@cokewhitechevy The 91 model year is a border tranny. Is it electronic or mechanical? It sounds like a governor issue. I remember those trannys very well. You may have to do a rebuild. Or if you know how to do it, just remove and service the governor on the side of the tranny. Good luck...
Hi, I have an 01 Mazda Tribute with the cd4e that only has reverse. It doesn't matter what gear I shift it into nothing happens. When I opened it up I found that the forward OWC was actually spinning both directions and the forward/coast/direct clutche friction discs and plates were burnt and welded together. I bought a kit and new forward OWC and replaced the clutch packs, plates, and forward clutch along with all the new seals from the kit. Put it all back together and still no forward gears?
@nickkaczynski I applaud your courage. Very few people can get that far. You need to understand that if you have no forward gears, your issue is mechanical and not electronic. So you probably know that already. I would suggest, being that your components were fused together (meaning heat), that you check the valve body for warping. If so then you need to correct that. Even if you didn't removed the VB, which you should have done to clean it. Post back when you know more....Thanks.
@ADPTraining So I found that the first time I put it back together I actually reversed the direction of the forward OWC. But now that it is back together I have severe slipping in 1 and second but once I get to about 25-30MPH I can shift to drive and take off. When I do shift to drive then I have a bad ticking sound coming from the drivers side of the trans. I did put the skift kit in for the pressure issues that can arise. Could it be that I have to much clearence in the clutch packs? help!!!
I dont have a problem testing the electrical system of the tranny. your educational videos provided some much needed insight. I will drain the unit, pull the pan, and apply voltage to each solenoid and make sure they clicking. The shop said the tranny oil was burnt, but I found no evidence that they even opened the upper fill plug! They said the DTC showed a burnt out "solenoid #3" but can't find any reference to this. however when shifting manually L to 2 is fine but 2 to 3 fails
@huskermanaz Great if you're willing to do the electrical tests. WARNING: If you're going to apply Batt voltage (12 V) to trigger the solenoids, do so for one or two seconds only or you'll burn the SS. Remember, the ECM or TCM has a current limiting circuit (ie. Resistor, Diodes) to prevent SS damage. So do it quick. But before you do anything, check for DTCs (codes). These are generic DTCs and always show up using a cheap code reader or scan tool. Verify the SS DTC, then do the tests. GL.
2002 Isuzu Rodeo -dreaded 4l30-E Automatic tranny (sealed tranny) Haven't checked DTC shop said Shift Solenoid was burnt out. They want the whole thing replaced (2900.00) Here's what happens. Starts great, put into drive and it takes off, gets up to 15-ish or so MPH and then it just starts coasting until I stop, put it in park, back to D and it does it again. Essentially it never shifts from 1-2. If I put it in L, it will move. 1,2,3 it moves. Never tried to go over 15 in either of these yet.
@huskermanaz OK, your tranny seems to be stuck in Limp-In-Mode. This is expected. Forget what the shop said. You don't have to rebuild the whole tranny due to a shorted SS. This is not right - assuming it is a SS. Find a reputable shop that deals with electronic problems. This shop may not even be a transmission shop, but an independent repair shop that specializes in electronic diagnostic. They're very hard to find, but once you do you'll be OK. Take the vehicle to PepBoy and post back DTCs.
@ADPTraining CONTINED: Don't rush with this job or you'll end up spending dearly. There are fairly easy ways to check for a shorted SS, but not all shops know what to do. It is easy to just rebuild the whole trans unnecessarily and be done with. But, it is a big and expensive proposition. Good luck...

Ok i have a chevy c2500, and it wont shift from first. My lights start to dem if i drive past 3000 rpm's, I put it on the computer and it said shift soleniod B, my two questions are , Should I just replace the solenoid B or both, and do I have to drop the whole tranny in order to do this?
@EdFnReed Well with the C2500, depending on YMM, there's a big chance you don't have to drop the tranny, just the trans oil pan. Do a resistance reading at the wiring harness before you drop the oil pan. Identify the problem first before major disassembly, even for a trans oilpan. Both of these SS share the same power. So chances are the power feed is OK. Disconnect the trans connector and perform a resistance check. Good luck...
OK, lots of info, that's good. DTC P0750 is usually a circuit failure. If is safe to assume the at least two or all shift-sol share the same power supply (12 v), so this is a sure bet. If only one DTC is in memory that the 12V power supply is fine. The TCM grounds the solenoid. In this case there's a 99% chance that replacing the sol will solve the problem.
@ADPTraining You can go with a used one. Sol either work or don't. When you buy the used unit, momentarily activate it using 12V and ground, should hear it click. It'll take more info to decipher which sol is which, but you can do this. It's not hard. Do some web research, but it is safe to use a salvage yard unit, so long as you test it. This type of code is not generated by clogged hydraulics. You probably have an open circuit/shorted sol. Replace it and you should be ok. GOOD LUCK.
Need help: '97 mazda protege LX. O/D light flashes at approx. 3 miles driven. Is in limp mode. Code pulls up as P0750, Shift Interlock Solenoid. Tranny was flushed and refilled. Filter not changed. Told it is the Shift Solenoid. Impossible finding part except in junkyard. 2 of same models exist. Is it worth trusting junkyard solenoids? 2 dealers faxed me exact same schematics. They don't know where the solenoid is located to offer part number. Will do work myself, some opinions/advice?
OK, shift sol. codes are of two types: electrical faults (high, low or open circuit) and mechanical (clogged, ect). The DTC or code definition will actually guide you. P0755 is a general shift sol fault. Since no electrical fault is indicated you should lean more toward a mechanical fault, such as clogged or slipping tranny. Good luck and post back with more.
Hello i have a 99 ford expedition 4wd. showing a dtc SSB malfuction(P0755). Would this be an electrical issue or would it be ok to just change out the solonoid. Thanks in advance for your help.
It sounds like a vehicle speed sensor. The vehicle speed sensor tells the transmission computer the speed and rate of change. It is a major input to the TCM or trans computer and used for shifting. See the VSS video that we have for more on this sensor and post back with more. Good luck.
I have a 95 chevy half-ton with a 4L60E. It starts in 2nd and shifts to 3rd but thats it no 1st or OD plus the tach and speedometer quit working when the tranny started doing this and the check gages light flashes while driving. Cant figure it out I would really appreciate your help Thank You
162k mi. 4r5ee shift to 2nd problem; P error shift seleniod B stuck, adjusted band but no tension. Nothing in pan no debris ect. The video suggests its a worn out band or something else mechanical? Comment please.
97 f250 5.8 tranny slips. changed filter magnets had coating very fine slime 1/16 inch thick, drove for 3 days n slipped once on 4th day- hasnt slipped since but havent been driving much. slipping in D and OD. please help
I have a 2003 Pontiac Aztek, that I had a radiator put on last month, which was driving well before I took it to this shop here, when they finished messing up my vehicle I needed to purchase a Battery and a New alternator, I haven't been able to drive it except 1 time because the battery won't stay charged took it to autozone they said that I need a Transmission Shift solenoid. I priced the parts what would the labor be for that type of job?
@BigJd64 I'm sorry my friend, but none of this adds up. What does a radiator have to do with the battery, alternator or shift solenoids. Try and post a detailed analysis here to your problem. The more detail the better and I'll try to help you out ASAP. On the surface I can tell you this, If you have issues with the ECM then none of the rest will work. Even the alternator is controlled by the ECM. Example: If a ground to the ECM was left loose at the radiator, then that could be it.
2000 Toyota Camry 4Cyl...Shifts from the first gear to 3rd gear...Check engine light comes on..I took it to AutoZone. I got PO105, PO446, PO758. I hope you can help me.
my 93 Lexus SC400 shut off when I put it in Drive or Reverse, I've been told my torque converter may be locked up, and some shift solenoid diagnostics might be in order. I recently cleaned the IAC, Throttle body, air plenum, replaced water temp sensor as well. All this shooting for better MPG results
@Motorfordtoyota Is your tranny not shifting from 1st or is it stuck in 2nd. If stuck in 2nd then is most surely an electronic problem. Drive slowly with tranny in 1st then shift to 2nd or D and feel for a change. This means that you were on 2nd gear. It is seldom confused. In 1st you'd barely hit 20 MPH. Also, is your check engine light ON. If so, then what are your codes or DTC. Post back with more if needed. Good luck.
@ADPTraining Im not sure, all I know is that it wont shift from 1st but will go into reverse, neutral, park, drive just fine. Im not sure abouth this cause it is my nieghbor's van that has been sitting for a while. I believe that it is the shift soleniod, how hard is it to replace them, and how expensive? I was wondering, cause I was thinking maybe I could buy it, fix it, then sell it for its actuall value!
@Motorfordtoyota OK, I'll try to help you out as best as I can, but I need more information from you. Let me know year, make and model as well as engine size. Give me all this info and I'll research and post here. Also be as descriptive as possible. Automotive diagnostic tech support is what we do all day long.
The answer to your question is that it depends on which tranny you posses in your vehicle. Fill me in with all these facts and I'll help you out. Good luck.
im trying to find out how many shift solenoids a 96 4l80e trans has. my truck has problems shifting from 2 to 3 and usually wont shift to 4. it shifts best when cold, and once upon a time i had it tested on a code reader and was told there was a soft code for a shift solenoid. any ideas helpfull
@diggldoo1 It is doubtful from your description that a SS is the problem. Also the ECM could be identifying a SS as the problem in erroneously. Look into the transmission hard parts operation. Drive the vehicle nice and slow and feel the shifts at different temperatures. Make sure the trans is not stuck into 2nd gear. Post back with more if possible. Thanks.
would the battery being run out effect the solenoid? My vans battery went dead and now the computer is saying low volt on the bat. and malfunctioning of shift solenoid and engine solenoid or something like that
@BrianbGood1 The Year , Make and Model would help. The general rule is yes. If the adaptive memory has been erased, then the shift points may be skewed. A relearn procedure may be needed. it's different for every vehicle. Post back with more info... Good luck.
@ADPTraining I changed the battery and now everything is fine.It was reading a solenoid error for the transmission and engine for a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country. After replacing the battery the check engine did not come back on and it is running fine. Im thinking the low voltage on the battery caused it to malfunction.Just glad it's ok now
@BrianbGood1 That might have been your problem. Battery or voltage issues are extremely problematic. They cause all kinds of illogical problems. Good thinking. Another possibility might have been that the adaptive memory was reset during the battery swap. Either way, wait a few days and if the CEL (light) doesn't come back then it's all fine. Good luck.
@npantelis Some newer systems have the valve body and solenoids on the side. There may be another side cover, but there is always way to get to them. Do some research on the web. Find out which tranny you have (trans number) and post it here. We'll do our best to advice you. Good luck...
Thanks for the explanation. I have a 2006 Pontiac G6 3.5 (auto trans). The trans seems to skip 2nd gear and slams into 3rd. To replace a solenoid, I have been told it will cost at least $800 in labor. That seems way too high to me. I'm sure its complicated repair but isn't that close to what a rebuilt would be? thanks again.
@npantelis ABSOLUTELY, ABSOLUTELY NOT.... No way. It takes half an hour to remove the trans oil pan and 2 seconds to replace the solenoid. Normal labor time for this sort of work, including diagnostic is around 350 to 420 dollars at most. Solenoid is about $65 TO $125. Good luck...
It would be awesome if you were to have real voice over instead of the computer voice, your video and your animation are great and you do a great job of explaining but the computer voice is sometime hard to understand and can be tiring on the ear after a couple of videos.
i have an 01 grand prix and after a lot of city driving my A/T starts to whine and shift hard. what should i do before rebuilding it? shift sol? pcs sol?
@shaase47 Give me a little more detail on your complaint. But, I'll do my best to help. First, being that the issue happens after some time driving lets concentrate first in fluid level and clogged filter. If your hydraulic fluid is of poor quality that may also be the cause. BE AWARE!!! In many situations whenever you do a fluid replacement on an older tranny you run the risk of it not shifting after the fluid has been replaced. This is due to the change in viscosity.
On a related note, if your issue is due to a faulty sensor, then it may also cause this issue.
1) is the CEL on (check engine light). If so then which DTCs (codes).
2) When this happens, is the tranny staying in 2nd gear? This signifies LIMP-IN mode, meaning it's an electronic issue.
3) Or is the tranny simply stuck in one gear all the time, as in 3rd or 1st or simply hanging up, as in delayed shifting. All these symptoms are important. Post further. Good luck.
@ADPTraining CONITNUED 2 ,it is now leaking I narrowed it down to transmission cooler lines, either to or from the trans cooler, when i have the level up ,it runs like a champ, can you tell me how to find a transmision cooler line leak, the tubes are metal, and and meet into rubber.thaNk you
@ADPTraining ,well guess what,I filled it up with transmission fluid,it was very dry,and the 1st gear to 2nd gear stop slipping, but if inot one thing ,it is another. After parking hte car I have a drip spot on right side, under radiator,I have Transmission Fluid, and that is the reason I was low after continuly adding fluid over the past few weeks, and the reason i didnt see it before ,is becuase it was so low ,it could not leak anything :LOL :P now i brought it up to level.
@ADPTraining ok when i drive it nice an easy it works wonderful,no codes present, what would be the best way to approach this problem.and thank you for responding back,
@versace2127 Then, you're looking at worn out transmission components, such as wet-clutch, gear-piston gasket-rings, etc. You'd probably need a re-build. Good luck...
@versace2127 Good description. It's great when you guys describe and specify your specific problem in a detailed manner. It helps you and other experiencing the same issue.
Form your description this much we know: It is not the pressure control solenoid (PS), it is not the ISS or OSS (input/output speed sensors, and it is not a problem caused by the TCM or transmission computer. You may also discard any electrical fault, otherwise the Tranny would be stuck in 2nd gear or limp-in mode.
@ADPTraining CONTINUED: You are advised to look to the following areas: Possible hydraulic valve body being warped, stuck valves, or broken pressure reserve piston (if any). Your issue may also be due to worn out first gear clutch.
What you need to do is drive the vehicle in a nice and paused manner, meaning without much of a load. If it shifts fine that your issue is happening when the tranny is loaded. This point you've already described (happening at an incline).
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 2: If your issue also shows up even while the vehicle is driven slow and nice, then that would point more towards a control problem and at that time I would start to suspect a sensor problem, either ISS OSS, TPS, etc.
FINAL NOTE: Make sure your engine computer or ECM (on FORDs is that same for both trans and engine) doesn't have a TPS DTC or code. The TPS or throttle position sensor is a main input for transmission shift points.
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 3: If the TPS has blind spots at the start of the pedal travel, than it would cause almost the same exact problem. Even if no DTC is present, you may still have a faulty TPS. Automotive diagnostics is not an exact science. Often times the ECM will not detect a problem on a particular sensor. Check the TPS using a graphing multimeter. It is the only way. I'd hate for you to replace it if it is indeed not faulty. Good luck...
@ADPTraining -hi i have a 2006 ford taurus AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION,and i was watching a few vids of yours ,the shift solenoid one to be exact, and saw a few comments on the vid about having a shift problem from 1st gear to 2nd gear, and i was like omg i am having same issue.
it happens when i am at a stop sign or red light, and go to pull off,it has the issue from 1st,and rpms go high, like shudder, then finaly into 2nd, it especially does it when sitting on a hill,or incline ,when load is on trany
I have a 2004 chevy cavalier and It has 123,000 miles with an automatic transmission. Recently it began to shift HARD between gears. I took vacation time to change my tranmission filter hoping that would cure the problem. I put 10 quarts of fluid in it which it did not fill it up. Scared I might over fill it I stopped. The problem contiued. I put in another 4 quarts and it stopped for a while but the problem contiues could it be my solienoid? And no it's not leaking.
@dynamitemike65 Hello, well that's good input. Know this, if the tranny goes through all the shifts, then the solenoids are OK. Drive the vehicle nice and normal, listen for all the 4 shifts (could be 5). If they happen fine, then Sol. are fine.
Next, then concentrate on the pressure control solenoid. Also know this, the normal position for the PS Sol. is full pressure, meaning if PS is disconnected, full pressure is applied.
@ADPTraining CONTINUED: Full pressure applied means hard shifting. You could test for pressure at the pressure port, but this may be out of your league. If PS is shorted or open it'll set a DTC (code). Check for codes. If it is clogged or mechanically damaged it may not set a DTC. You could identify and replaced the PS, but a pressure check is the way to go. This procedure usually falls on the trans specialist domain. Be careful, don't get ripped off. Good luck.
@ADPTraining Thanks for the response. Yes it does shift through all 5 of them. I was paying close to attention and noticed it only shifts hard from shift 1 to shift 2 at approximately 10mph after that all shifts are normal.
@dynamitemike65 OK, good that points to a possible mechanical problem, such as a clogged valve body conduit, sticky ball valve, broken valve spring, etc. Unlikely to be any major hard parts. You'd have to get your hands on a service manual, check all hydraulic conduits, and inspect visually. Pay close attention to small valve body parts. Also, check shift solenoid filter mesh. You could also swap shift solenoids position. Often times they're the same. But, that may involve more disassembly.
@ADPTraining CONTINUED: At this point in time, forget TPS, PS control sol. etc, since it only does it from 1 to 2nd gear. This is a very specific problem and fairly easy to tackle. Good luck.
@ADPTraining Thanks for the information. Ufortunately I'm not a big gear head and this sounds a little over my head. The information you gave me is invalueable. I'm scared of being taken advantage of but with this information I will be well prepared. I can't thank you enough for your input. Thanks again.
@druiz190 Well, the fact that it starts on 1st is relevant. It's not stuck in limp-in mode. Disconnect the trans main connector and see if starts in 2nd (limp-in mode). If so then your TCM is effecting the shift pattern that you see and it is seeing something that's causing it to do that.
Then....it's only a matter of following the diagnostics to it's final resolution. Keep posting.
Very informational Video. Thanks for posting, I have a 92 mazda protege and i used a code reader and no codes came out, so i took it to a trans shop and still no codes, my car is is automatic and it revs really high in 1st and then skips 2nd gear and goes to 3rd and doesnt go into 4th/overdrive. Would that be a bad solenoid or the wiring?, if not those do you know what it would be?
I have a 97 Cadillac Eldorado V8 North Star everytime i take off my car has a problem shifting out of first gear..can anybody explain whats going on??...i live in the NY area..and can anybody refer any certified mechanics in my area? Thank you
@onesidequeens Hello, the fact that it's stuck in 1st gear for a while says something. If the TCM (trans. Computer) or electronics were to blame, the system goes into link-in mode. This is always 2nd or 3rd gear. However, if your Cadi has delayed 1st to 2nd shifting you have to determine if it's caused by the TCM or a mechanical problem.
Perform the following tests:
1) Disconnect the electrical connector from the transmission.
2) Drive the vehicle and see if you're stuck on 2nd or 3rd gear
3) With connector disconnected the tranny will not shift. That's fine. If stuck in 2 or 3 gear then that's limp-in mode. That the way it should be. Which means that the TCM is causing your hard or delayed shifting condition. If this is the case, then your next step are as follows.
4) Scann the TCM for codes. On Cadis you don't need a scan tool. You do so through the dash or AC control buttons.
5) Use the detected DTC (codes) to continue your diagnostics.
They have replaced the TPS, PCS, and have almost rebuilt the transmission. This has done absolutely nothing. I have found very few people online who have similar, but not the exact same symptoms. They think that it might be the tcc or a bad MAF. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I might resolve these issues please respond back.
@buickman85 Fantastic description of the problem. First, know this: the main input to the TCM (trans computer) is the TPS. You'd mentioned that you've replaced it already. This does not mean that there's a problem with the circuit, TPS ground or reference voltage. THere may even be another sensor that shares the reference voltage with the TPS, shorting out intermittently and causing trouble.
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 1: First thing you do it disconnect the transmission completely, down at the main connector. Then drive the car at low cruise (20 to 35MPH). 99% of all trannies get stuck in 2nd gear by default (limp-in-mode). Drive and try to feel for the same problem. If problem absent then it is related to the trans, but not necessarily because of it. If problem still there, then most likely not related to the transmission.
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 2: Then, if related to the trans, re-connect the trans connector and disconnect the TPS. It'll set the CEL on (check eng. light) so erase the codes (DTCs) later. The TPS is the main input for shifting. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS VERY, VERY MUCH RELATED TO THE TPS or IT"S CIRCUITRY.
Drive the vehicle without the TPS. The TCM will revert to MAF shifting paterns. In other words, it'll look at the MAF for shifting input.
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 3: The MAF is not the best sensor for shifting, so expect hard or low quality shifting. What you're interested in doing is recreating the same problem that you're having. If you can't recreate your symptoms, then the TPS or CIRCUITRY is the most likely cause. Keep me posted...
PS. If you post again, please provide the YMM (year make and model) and engine size for your vehicle. Good luck...
Thanks for the reply my friend. This may come as a surprise to you but, my car is an 07 buick lacrosse 3.8 v6 with only 30,000 + miles. Its almost like the tcc won't disengage at certain speeds. I will try to make a video of the problem.
Sometimes it will even jerk a little when I get off the gas. It does this on level roads, but is very noticeable when going up hill. Feels like the car will stall, but it has never done it. The car will make a low pitch sound and slightly vibrate. Anyone who drives this car in light traffic should feel the problem within 15 mins. In the past 5-6 months I have been to the dealership 4 times because of this problem.
This problem happens anywhere between 25mph or higher. It looks like it will down shift then quickly up shift or not even downshift at all. The car will accelerate very slowly. The car will not down shift unless I give it anywhere between 1/4 or more gas. Also if I take my foot off the gas while this is happening the tach will jump up anywhere between 200-1,000 rpm.
When I am cruising at a constant speed and want to make a gradual acceleration to a higher speed using light throttle the car will hesitate and accelerate slowly.
went to autozone today and threw a p1870 code on my 99 chevy tahoe... they told me i need to change out the shift solenoid... i dont think that is the problem because the truck wasnt shifting hard... its just the truck studders after i let off the brake.. RPM and motor still run smooth but it shakes after i let off the brake leaving a redlight...
@unknownuser1070 This sounds like clutch (hydraulic clutches) slipping. This DTC is arrived at by the ECM through a logic process. In other words, if the ECM senses a wrong shift, via the VSS or OSS (input/output speed sensor), then it may flag the SS inappropriately. This is were a good tech/analyst pays off. Good luck...
@ADPTraining..... well i disconnected the battery at lunch... once i pluged it up after work the CEL went off.. but now i hear something rattleing in the tranny... sounds like a piece of clutch banging around in there... as i was driving home the truck would momentarly lose power but then kick back in and keep going... like the clutch is slippin... but i dont think thats the problem.... i think its something bigger and more expensive to fix....
@unknownuser1070 Don't be discouraged by the noise. Most important, don't drive the truck anymore. Remove the trans pan and take a look. Trans clutches don't often brake like that. It may be a reserve spring (hydraulic fluid). Can't hurt to look.
@ADPTraining unfortunatly i have to drive the truck... my cavalier is misfiring... i think one of the coil packs went out in it... now im just trying to sell it so i can have some cash to work on the tahoe... knowing my wife shes gonna drive it till the wheels fall off...
@blue7fish1 I'd love to know the specific transmission type, but I am 98% sure you can do it on almost all GM vehicles. The last time I checked with the TransDoctor it was possible on a GM 3800 ingine with the few possibilities for it. Good luck.
@pumper216 The Mustang has a main fuse that feeds all shift solenoids. I suggest you refer to the TransDoctor or Transmission Troubleshooter software on our site, since these are specific and broad technical questions. If you're going to work on the tranny yourself, you need some diagnostic help. Good luck.
My 2000 impala eventually swithches into 2nd gear at 25mph and sometimes up to 40mph if you give it alot of gas. This gets me terrible gas mileage when it shifts so long, like 10mpg. Its got an p1811 error code, hard/adaptive shift, so im pretty sure i need a whole new transmission rebuild to solve this problem. Could a new shift kit help for short term? Thanks for your time.
DTC P1811, as you said means max. adaptive memory reached. Two possibilities, ISS and OSS (in/out speed sensors) discrepancies. Bad contacts, loose sonnection, or sensors or a mechanical problem. As you said, number two needs a rebuild. If the problem is not happening all the time, I'd go with the electrical issue. Hope this helps. Good luck.
OK, but one of those wires is the signal wire. This is how it goes: At the very least you have a ground, voltage reference (5, 8 or 12 volts) and a signal wire.
Without looking at a wiring diagram, probe at each wire then cycle the shifter (from P to 1st gear). On the signal wire you should see a changing voltage. If you don't see a changing voltage at any of the wires, then the TR switch is unresponsive. Check the linkage and if OK, then replace TR sensor or switch. Good luck...
See if you have a changing voltage on the TR before you replace it. As a preliminary test, just look for a changing voltage, usually between 0 and 5 volts. The TR sensor normally goes shorted, so no output is seen. It's an easy test. Let me know if you need more input on testing and I appreciate your post...
212gemenis, your vehicle is stuck in 1st gear due to the TCM being in limp-in mode. It's probably 2nd gear, ussual for LIM. DTC P0730 - Incorrect gear ration set in memory due to a discrepancy between Transmission-Range-Sensor (also called neutral switch) and VSS sensor (Vehicle Speed Sensor). In other words, TCM compares VSS to Range-Sensor and consults a memory look-up table. Check your range switch or VSS for proper operation.
Continued: You may also have a slipping transmission. Make sure your trans is not slipping.
NOTE: Some newer vehicles (your Jetta not included) do not have a VSS. The TCM gets vehicle speed from the WSS or wheel speed sensor. So there's no duplication of logical data.
Remember, this DTC set when there's a discrepancy between the shift-selected and the vehicle speed.
"Use the TransDoctor POD". The TransDoctor is a fully electronic breakout box POD, which allows you to force shift the transmission using the POD and your PC/Laptop. If you have a non shifting transmission and you're able to shift it using the TransDoctor POD, then your problem is not the transmission. It may be the VSS (vehicle speed sensor, etc). On most modern systems the VSS is gone. You now use the WSS or wheel speed sensor for transmission operation.
We are now also manufacturing the vehicle specific dedicated cables for each transmission connector. Even if we don;t make the cable, just send us the old transmission connector, which you'd replace anyways, and we'll make you a new test connector from it withing 7 working days. This sort of micro manufacturing is unmatched.
Since we also designed the software for it, we can also update it as per your specified transmission. Most trannies are already covered as of right now.

EASTWOODO4 2 days ago
@EASTWOODO4 Look for codes. Assuming we have fluid then the hydraulic pump is the most likely cause. Even with no power feed to the transmission, you should still be able to drive in 2nd gear. A complete no go points to a possible hydraulic pump. Good luck.

Is this so or not and could it be the shift solenoid or a temperature sensor since it works normal if I turn of and let it cool down for a while.
dIna4D 3 days ago in playlist transmission
@dIna4D Hi, OK nice description. First, scan the vehicle for codes. Is the check0engine light ON? Yes, whoever said that about the valve body may be right. The valve body warps when hot then goes back to normal when cold. But, this is a long shot. A proper diagnostic procedure should be done before condemning the VB. Post back with more details if possible. Good luck.
ADPTraining 3 days ago
@ADPTraining Thanks for the response. The CEL isn't on and there are no codes after running the ODB2 diagnostic with a VAGCOM. Can the shift solenoid become clogged/partially clogged without a code being generated? wrt that...I changed the transmission fluid at 108,000 km and it is now 142,000 km; the manual recommends every 60,000km. Also, can the VB and shift solenoids be repaired as these parts are very expensive? Thanks.
dIna4D 2 days ago
@dIna4D OK, be careful there.... IMPORTANT. You should also scan the vehicle with a regular OBD-2 scanner or its European counterpart (I think you're in the EU). This is why, lots of manufacturers make a separation between OEM (factory) and OBD2 and DTC or codes that show on the OBD-2 side will not show up on the OEM (VagCom) side. Try and scan with cheap code reader.
No, these parts can be cleaned but not repaired. You may get them at your local yard, if available to save money. Good luck.

i have a 99 infiniti i30 my problem was that the car would not sit on park even though it said it on the shifter the car would also not start, i check underneath the transmission and found out the lever wasnt pointing up as park i manually set it car started right away but now having problem switching gears, so i let it idle on emergency brakes went under the car once again i manually shift the lever and it goes through the gears....So tell me, could it be bad cable or bad lever...thanks!!!!!!!!
ryanzwife1989 5 days ago

33kbaxter 2 weeks ago
@33kbaxter No it is not. Always remember that even if the transmission electrical connector is disconnected the trans will run in second gear. This is usually the natural gear position for most trannies. You may be looking at a pump issue. Try and accelerate and making a shift. It may also be due to a clogged fluid passage, but more that likely a pump issue. Good luck.

@ADPTraining i have 1996 ford exploer that doesnt want to go in to 2nd gear well go over 35mph if i let off the gas then press again it will catch the gear and go i was told it was the shift solenoid its that true
21mackman 1 week ago
@21mackman It is possible. 2nd gear is normally the limp-in mode gear. In case of a problem, your trans stays in 2nd to allow you to reach a repair shop. But before condemning the SS check for available power at all the solenoids. If you lost the one wire power feed to all solenoids that'll do it. Post back once you've checked that.

I have only replaced the ecm nothing more I was asking would I need to have those parts replaced bc of the issue
insanekamkze86 3 months ago
@insanekamkze86 Not necessarily. The code only points you in one possible diagnostic direction. It doesn't mean to replace the component. Check for component resistance and TCM/ECM trigger signal. Good luck.

I have a 05 corolla n after I replaced the ecm under recall it threw the p0741 code tcc solenoid performance do I need to replace the ecm again the solenoid or the torque converter dealer was like we can replace solenoid but don't know if it will be fixed bc it could be anything it shifts find but now is having problems between 50 n 65 mph when it never did n stopped twice while driving n battery has full voltage I have 86k miles so its past warranty was wondering what would need to be done thx
insanekamkze86 3 months ago
@insanekamkze86 Stop replacing parts. It is unlikely that the ECM is still defective. It might be the new software flash in the system. See if there's a newer re-flash for this cause. If not then follow a specific diagnostic procedure for you solenoid. good luck...
ADPTraining 3 months ago
My 2005 Corolla didn't pass smog because of what the auto shop said was a "P0741 tcc solenoid performance or stuck off" code. (yes there is an engine light on) But the car runs smoothly. No transmission noises or anything....could it be that the tcc solenoid simply needs to be replaced??
kurojin97 3 months ago
@kurojin97 Good question, with the CEL on you will not pass inspection. That is the reason for the inspection program. This code points to the TCC solenoid or the torque converter itself. It means that the TCC is not operational. it is up to the repair shop to determine that.
One test is to manually turn the TCC ON with the vehicle at idle. The the torque converter is good then the engine will stall with the vehicle in DRIVE. Simple right, but you'd be amazed at how many shops don't know this
ADPTraining 3 months ago
Respond to this video... CONTINUED: If it stalls then then the torque converter is fine and the TCC sol as well. So you'd concentrate on a signal issue or why the TCC is not being activated as in a broken wire, ec. Good luck to you.

I have a 02 Grand am that while im driving the speedo will bounce up and down after about 10 miles per hour. after it starts to do it the car starts to stutter like its not wanting to go i have to give it more gas to get it going...I was told it could be the shift soleniod..does this sound like it could be this.
chrisNkathy09 7 months ago
@chrisNkathy09 No, it sounds like the VSS or vehicle speed sensor. Very easy to replace. I'm not recommending to replace it, it is just a good possibility. The SS or shift solenoid will not have any effect on the speedo or make it erratic. The VSS is always on the transmission output shaft at one of the wheels. WARNING!!! Be careful, on newer systems the VSS could be one of the front WSS or wheel speed sensors. Newer systems did away with the VSS are use one front WSS for speed detection.

Hello my names nik and my 97 awd bravada doesn't go into 1st gear or 4 gear but instead starts off in second and shifts to 3rd so i only have 2 gears and HORRIBLE gas mileage was wondering if you thought it might be a shift solenoid?
linsnik91 7 months ago
@linsnik91 It looks like it's in limp-in mode. You need to scan the ECM for codes. Even if it's a separate TCM, it'll reflect on the ECM as a stored transmission code. Then you can take it from there. It's impossible to just jump into a repair without more information... Good luck and post more.
PS. Almost all town auto parts now sell cheap code readers and scanners. They all do the same thing, retrieve stored codes...
ADPTraining 7 months ago
@linsnik91 I write this not knowing if your problem was fixed, but I had much the same problem, as I also have a 97 Bravada. Mine was however stuck in 3rd gear and would shift only into 4th. The scanner gave me 3 seperate codes, and I learned that it was simply a bad fuse. The fuse box on the driver side dash has a fuse called "TRANS" on it, should be a 10 Amp fuse. Possibly replacing that may help. If not, then your problem isn't as much like mine as it seems.

omarG19100 9 months ago
@omarG19100 Check your fluid level. I know is a dumb suggestion, but it happens a lot. If level ok, then your tranny is starting the stick, either valve body or hydraulic issues. Don't do a fluid tune up. With new fluid the trans may never shift again. Good luck...

rocky8267 9 months ago
@rocky8267 Probably not, SS issues tend to stay pretty much the same. Some SS issues do come and go with engine or trans temperature. I won't recommend a transmission oil change. problem with my in laws 2002 mazda 626, 4cyl, automatic tranny. Is this the shift solenoid issue?
artrim1 9 months ago

Thx again.
artrim1 9 months ago
@artrim1 OK, there are a few, but they are expensive. The factory scanner will definitely cover it all, but too much. There are others that have coverage on the aftermarket side. Hi, I have a 91 chevy 1500 4x4 THM700R4 tranny. When im driving it takes high rpm before it shifts. And when i come to a stop sometimes what ever gear it was in it stays in that gear when I take off. HELP!
cokewhitechevy 9 months ago

Put it all back together and still no forward gears?
nickkaczynski 10 months ago
@nickkaczynski I applaud your courage. Very few people can get that far. You need to understand that if you have no forward gears, your issue is mechanical and not electronic. So you probably know that already. I would suggest, being that your components were fused together (meaning heat), that you check the valve body for warping. If so then you need to correct that. Even if you didn't removed the VB, which you should have done to clean it. Post back when you know more....Thanks.
ADPTraining 10 months ago
@ADPTraining So I found that the first time I put it back together I actually reversed the direction of the forward OWC. But now that it is back together I have severe slipping in 1 and second but once I get to about 25-30MPH I can shift to drive and take off. When I do shift to drive then I have a bad ticking sound coming from the drivers side of the trans. I did put the skift kit in for the pressure issues that can arise. Could it be that I have to much clearence in the clutch packs? help!!!
nickkaczynski 9 months ago
@nickkaczynski OK, now I think you definitely have a mechanical issue. Good luck on that, but live and learn remember.

They said the DTC showed a burnt out "solenoid #3" but can't find any reference to this. however when shifting manually L to 2 is fine but 2 to 3 fails
huskermanaz 10 months ago

Never tried to go over 15 in either of these yet.
huskermanaz 10 months ago
@huskermanaz OK, your tranny seems to be stuck in Limp-In-Mode. This is expected. Forget what the shop said. You don't have to rebuild the whole tranny due to a shorted SS. This is not right - assuming it is a SS. Find a reputable shop that deals with electronic problems. This shop may not even be a transmission shop, but an independent repair shop that specializes in electronic diagnostic. They're very hard to find, but once you do you'll be OK. Take the vehicle to PepBoy and post back DTCs.
ADPTraining 10 months ago

EdFnReed 1 year ago
@EdFnReed Well with the C2500, depending on YMM, there's a big chance you don't have to drop the tranny, just the trans oil pan. Do a resistance reading at the wiring harness before you drop the oil pan. Identify the problem first before major disassembly, even for a trans oilpan. Both of these SS share the same power. So chances are the power feed is OK. Disconnect the trans connector and perform a resistance check. Good luck...
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@EdFnReed Sounds like you have a battery charging issue.
DlSCONNECTED 11 months ago
OK, lots of info, that's good. DTC P0750 is usually a circuit failure. If is safe to assume the at least two or all shift-sol share the same power supply (12 v), so this is a sure bet. If only one DTC is in memory that the 12V power supply is fine. The TCM grounds the solenoid. In this case there's a 99% chance that replacing the sol will solve the problem.
ADPTraining 1 year ago

Will do work myself, some opinions/advice?
frodnew1 1 year ago
OK, shift sol. codes are of two types: electrical faults (high, low or open circuit) and mechanical (clogged, ect). The DTC or code definition will actually guide you. P0755 is a general shift sol fault. Since no electrical fault is indicated you should lean more toward a mechanical fault, such as clogged or slipping tranny. Good luck and post back with more.

It sounds like a vehicle speed sensor. The vehicle speed sensor tells the transmission computer the speed and rate of change. It is a major input to the TCM or trans computer and used for shifting. See the VSS video that we have for more on this sensor and post back with more. Good luck.

BigJd64 1 year ago
@BigJd64 I'm sorry my friend, but none of this adds up. What does a radiator have to do with the battery, alternator or shift solenoids. Try and post a detailed analysis here to your problem. The more detail the better and I'll try to help you out ASAP. On the surface I can tell you this, If you have issues with the ECM then none of the rest will work. Even the alternator is controlled by the ECM. Example: If a ground to the ECM was left loose at the radiator, then that could be it.

would this be why a 98 dodge grand carvan would not shift from first? And how much would it cost to replace?
Motorfordtoyota 1 year ago
@Motorfordtoyota Is your tranny not shifting from 1st or is it stuck in 2nd. If stuck in 2nd then is most surely an electronic problem. Drive slowly with tranny in 1st then shift to 2nd or D and feel for a change. This means that you were on 2nd gear. It is seldom confused. In 1st you'd barely hit 20 MPH. Also, is your check engine light ON. If so, then what are your codes or DTC. Post back with more if needed. Good luck.

@ADPTraining Im not sure, all I know is that it wont shift from 1st but will go into reverse, neutral, park, drive just fine. diggldoo1 1 year ago

My vans battery went dead and now the computer is saying low volt on the bat. and malfunctioning of shift solenoid and engine solenoid or something like that
BrianbGood1 1 year ago
@BrianbGood1 The Year , Make and Model would help. The general rule is yes. If the adaptive memory has been erased, then the shift points may be skewed. A relearn procedure may be needed. it's different for every vehicle. Post back with more info... Good luck.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining I changed the battery and now everything is fine.It was reading a solenoid error for the transmission and engine for a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country. After replacing the battery the check engine did not come back on and it is running fine. Im thinking the low voltage on the battery caused it to malfunction.Just glad it's ok now
BrianbGood1 1 year ago
@BrianbGood1 That might have been your problem. Battery or voltage issues are extremely problematic. They cause all kinds of illogical problems. Good thinking. Another possibility might have been that the adaptive memory was reset during the battery swap. Either way, wait a few days and if the CEL (light) doesn't come back then it's all fine. Good luck.

npantelis 1 year ago
@npantelis Some newer systems have the valve body and solenoids on the side. There may be another side cover, but there is always way to get to them. Do some research on the web. Find out which tranny you have (trans number) and post it here. We'll do our best to advice you. Good luck...
ADPTraining 1 year ago
Thanks for the explanation. I have a 2006 Pontiac G6 3.5 (auto trans). The trans seems to skip 2nd gear and slams into 3rd. To replace a solenoid, I have been told it will cost at least $800 in labor. That seems way too high to me. I'm sure its complicated repair but isn't that close to what a rebuilt would be? thanks again.
npantelis 1 year ago
@npantelis ABSOLUTELY, ABSOLUTELY NOT.... No way. It takes half an hour to remove the trans oil pan and 2 seconds to replace the solenoid. Normal labor time for this sort of work, including diagnostic is around 350 to 420 dollars at most. Solenoid is about $65 TO $125. Good luck...

shaase47 1 year ago
@shaase47 Give me a little more detail on your complaint. But, I'll do my best to help. First, being that the issue happens after some time driving lets concentrate first in fluid level and clogged filter. If your hydraulic fluid is of poor quality that may also be the cause. BE AWARE!!! In many situations whenever you do a fluid replacement on an older tranny you run the risk of it not shifting after the fluid has been replaced. This is due to the change in viscosity.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED:
Good luck.

versace2127 1 year ago
@versace2127 Good description. It's great when you guys describe and specify your specific problem in a detailed manner. It helps you and other experiencing the same issue.
Form your description this much we know: It is not the pressure control solenoid (PS), it is not the ISS or OSS (input/output speed sensors, and it is not a problem caused by the TCM or transmission computer. You may also discard any electrical fault, otherwise the Tranny would be stuck in 2nd gear or limp-in mode.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED: You are advised to look to the following areas: Possible hydraulic valve body being warped, stuck valves, or broken pressure reserve piston (if any). Your issue may also be due to worn out first gear clutch.
What you need to do is drive the vehicle in a nice and paused manner, meaning without much of a load. If it shifts fine that your issue is happening when the tranny is loaded. This point you've already described (happening at an incline).
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 2: If your issue also shows up even while the vehicle is driven slow and nice, then that would point more towards a control problem and at that time I would start to suspect a sensor problem, either ISS OSS, TPS, etc.
FINAL NOTE: Make sure your engine computer or ECM (on FORDs is that same for both trans and engine) doesn't have a TPS DTC or code. The TPS or throttle position sensor is a main input for transmission shift points.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 3: If the TPS has blind spots at the start of the pedal travel, than it would cause almost the same exact problem. Even if no DTC is present, you may still have a faulty TPS. Automotive diagnostics is not an exact science. Often times the ECM will not detect a problem on a particular sensor. Check the TPS using a graphing multimeter. It is the only way. I'd hate for you to replace it if it is indeed not faulty. Good luck...

And no it's not leaking.
dynamitemike65 1 year ago
@dynamitemike65 Hello, well that's good input. Know this, if the tranny goes through all the shifts, then the solenoids are OK. Drive the vehicle nice and normal, listen for all the 4 shifts (could be 5). If they happen fine, then Sol. are fine.
Next, then concentrate on the pressure control solenoid. Also know this, the normal position for the PS Sol. is full pressure, meaning if PS is disconnected, full pressure is applied.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED: Full pressure applied means hard shifting. You could test for pressure at the pressure port, but this may be out of your league. If PS is shorted or open it'll set a DTC (code). Check for codes. If it is clogged or mechanically damaged it may not set a DTC. You could identify and replaced the PS, but a pressure check is the way to go. This procedure usually falls on the trans specialist domain. Be careful, don't get ripped off. Good luck.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining Thanks for the response. Yes it does shift through all 5 of them. I was paying close to attention and noticed it only shifts hard from shift 1 to shift 2 at approximately 10mph after that all shifts are normal.
dynamitemike65 1 year ago
@dynamitemike65 OK, good that points to a possible mechanical problem, such as a clogged valve body conduit, sticky ball valve, broken valve spring, etc. Unlikely to be any major hard parts. You'd have to get your hands on a service manual, check all hydraulic conduits, and inspect visually. Pay close attention to small valve body parts. Also, check shift solenoid filter mesh. You could also swap shift solenoids position. Often times they're the same. But, that may involve more disassembly.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED: At this point in time, forget TPS, PS control sol. etc, since it only does it from 1 to 2nd gear. This is a very specific problem and fairly easy to tackle. Good luck.

in my last comment i didnt post what transmission i have. I have a 92 mazda protege dx and the transmission name is F4AEL
druiz190 1 year ago
@druiz190 Well, the fact that it starts on 1st is relevant. It's not stuck in limp-in mode. Disconnect the trans main connector and see if starts in 2nd (limp-in mode). If so then your TCM is effecting the shift pattern that you see and it is seeing something that's causing it to do that.
Then....it's only a matter of following the diagnostics to it's final resolution. Keep posting.

onesidequeens 1 year ago
@onesidequeens Hello, the fact that it's stuck in 1st gear for a while says something. If the TCM (trans. Computer) or electronics were to blame, the system goes into link-in mode. This is always 2nd or 3rd gear. However, if your Cadi has delayed 1st to 2nd shifting you have to determine if it's caused by the TCM or a mechanical problem.
Perform the following tests:
1) Disconnect the electrical connector from the transmission.
2) Drive the vehicle and see if you're stuck on 2nd or 3rd gear
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED:
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 2:
Possible conditions that may cause this problem are the following:
a) The OSS or output speed sensor. The OSS which may also be called VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is used by the TCM to effect the shifting points.
b) The TPS or throttle position sensor. It is a main input to the TCM for throttle opening and load factor.
c) Check your power and grounds to the TCM related sensors. This is a bit difficult for the average DIY. Watch our electrical (ground test) video.

They have replaced the TPS, PCS, and have almost rebuilt the transmission. This has done absolutely nothing. I have found very few people online who have similar, but not the exact same symptoms. They think that it might be the tcc or a bad MAF. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I might resolve these issues please respond back.
buickman85 1 year ago
@buickman85 Fantastic description of the problem. First, know this: the main input to the TCM (trans computer) is the TPS. You'd mentioned that you've replaced it already. This does not mean that there's a problem with the circuit, TPS ground or reference voltage. THere may even be another sensor that shares the reference voltage with the TPS, shorting out intermittently and causing trouble.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 1: First thing you do it disconnect the transmission completely, down at the main connector. Then drive the car at low cruise (20 to 35MPH). 99% of all trannies get stuck in 2nd gear by default (limp-in-mode). Drive and try to feel for the same problem. If problem absent then it is related to the trans, but not necessarily because of it. If problem still there, then most likely not related to the transmission.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
@ADPTraining CONTINUED 2: Then, if related to the trans, re-connect the trans connector and disconnect the TPS. It'll set the CEL on (check eng. light) so erase the codes (DTCs) later. The TPS is the main input for shifting. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS VERY, VERY MUCH RELATED TO THE TPS or IT"S CIRCUITRY.
Drive the vehicle without the TPS. The TCM will revert to MAF shifting paterns. In other words, it'll look at the MAF for shifting input.
ADPTraining 1 year ago

I will try to make a video of the problem.
buickman85 1 year ago
Sometimes it will even jerk a little when I get off the gas. It does this on level roads, but is very noticeable when going up hill. Feels like the car will stall, but it has never done it. The car will make a low pitch sound and slightly vibrate. Anyone who drives this car in light traffic should feel the problem within 15 mins. In the past 5-6 months I have been to the dealership 4 times because of this problem.
buickman85 1 year ago
This problem happens anywhere between 25mph or higher. It looks like it will down shift then quickly up shift or not even downshift at all. The car will accelerate very slowly. The car will not down shift unless I give it anywhere between 1/4 or more gas. Also if I take my foot off the gas while this is happening the tach will jump up anywhere between 200-1,000 rpm.
buickman85 1 year ago
When I am cruising at a constant speed and want to make a gradual acceleration to a higher speed using light throttle the car will hesitate and accelerate slowly.

@ADPTraining..... well i disconnected the battery at lunch... once i pluged it up after work the CEL went off.. but now i hear something rattleing in the tranny... sounds like a piece of clutch banging around in there... as i was driving home the truck would momentarly lose power but then kick back in and keep going... like the clutch is slippin... but i dont think thats the problem.... i think its something bigger and more expensive to fix....
unknownuser1070 1 year ago
@unknownuser1070 Don't be discouraged by the noise. Most important, don't drive the truck anymore. Remove the trans pan and take a look. Trans clutches don't often brake like that. It may be a reserve spring (hydraulic fluid). Can't hurt to look.

@ADPTraining unfortunatly i have to drive the truck... my cavalier is misfiring... i think one of the coil packs went out in it... now im just trying to sell it so i can have some cash to work on the tahoe... knowing my wife shes gonna drive it till the wheels fall off...

can i take off the transmission cover to replace the gear shift solenoid myself or not for a 1994 3800 buick parkavenue.
blue7fish1 1 year ago
@blue7fish1 I'd love to know the specific transmission type, but I am 98% sure you can do it on almost all GM vehicles. The last time I checked with the TransDoctor it was possible on a GM 3800 ingine with the few possibilities for it. Good luck.

ok iHave a mustang..where is the shift solenoid fuse? whats the amp...please help
pumper216 1 year ago
@pumper216 The Mustang has a main fuse that feeds all shift solenoids. I suggest you refer to the TransDoctor or Transmission Troubleshooter software on our site, since these are specific and broad technical questions. If you're going to work on the tranny yourself, you need some diagnostic help. Good luck.

Post by icecreamskittle:
My 2000 impala eventually swithches into 2nd gear at 25mph and sometimes up to 40mph if you give it alot of gas. This gets me terrible gas mileage when it shifts so long, like 10mpg. Its got an p1811 error code, hard/adaptive shift, so im pretty sure i need a whole new transmission rebuild to solve this problem. Could a new shift kit help for short term? Thanks for your time.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
DTC P1811, as you said means max. adaptive memory reached. Two possibilities, ISS and OSS (in/out speed sensors) discrepancies. Bad contacts, loose sonnection, or sensors or a mechanical problem. As you said, number two needs a rebuild. If the problem is not happening all the time, I'd go with the electrical issue. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I have an p1811 error code. My 2000 implala shifts into secound gear at 30mph which gets me terrible gas mileage. Is this a 1-2 soleniod problem?

i did get 11.0 volts on wires that goes to the TR what thats mean?
212geminis 1 year ago
OK, but one of those wires is the signal wire. This is how it goes: At the very least you have a ground, voltage reference (5, 8 or 12 volts) and a signal wire.
Without looking at a wiring diagram, probe at each wire then cycle the shifter (from P to 1st gear). On the signal wire you should see a changing voltage. If you don't see a changing voltage at any of the wires, then the TR switch is unresponsive. Check the linkage and if OK, then replace TR sensor or switch. Good luck...

adptraining,,,, thanks for your help iam going to change the {TR} i think that would work thank you very much....
212geminis 1 year ago
See if you have a changing voltage on the TR before you replace it. As a preliminary test, just look for a changing voltage, usually between 0 and 5 volts. The TR sensor normally goes shorted, so no output is seen. It's an easy test. Let me know if you need more input on testing and I appreciate your post...

i have a 2001 jetta and is stok on first gear i got a code p0730 incorrec gear ratio what coudl it be can anybody tellme
212geminis 1 year ago
212gemenis, your vehicle is stuck in 1st gear due to the TCM being in limp-in mode. It's probably 2nd gear, ussual for LIM. DTC P0730 - Incorrect gear ration set in memory due to a discrepancy between Transmission-Range-Sensor (also called neutral switch) and VSS sensor (Vehicle Speed Sensor). In other words, TCM compares VSS to Range-Sensor and consults a memory look-up table. Check your range switch or VSS for proper operation.
ADPTraining 1 year ago
Continued: You may also have a slipping transmission. Make sure your trans is not slipping.
NOTE: Some newer vehicles (your Jetta not included) do not have a VSS. The TCM gets vehicle speed from the WSS or wheel speed sensor. So there's no duplication of logical data.
Remember, this DTC set when there's a discrepancy between the shift-selected and the vehicle speed.

02:48 "use the TransDoctor punt"
What is a "punt" ?
nobleheight 2 years ago
