Not much of a great battle? I don't think so. The Swedes were probably the finest army of the era, experienced and disciplined, and they won in numerous battles of the 17th century. Poltava was a place where the west was shocked by the rise of Russia. No one expected that, trust me. That's what makes this battle one of great points in history, a point at which Russia transformed into a mighty empire.

My favorite movies concerning the 17th/18th centuries are "Vatel" and "Ogniem i mieczem" ("with fire and sword"). The first is not a war movie, but it phenomenally explains the megalomania and decadence behind the power of Louis the XIV of France, with great performance from both Depardieu and Julian Sands(!). The second is actually a Polish mini-series about the age of Deluge and the Khmelnytsky Uprising. If you haven't seen them, you have my full recommendation.

One movie had a Russian AT rifle knocking out Mk VI Tigers from the front at about 800 meters. Every war movie seems to glorify one side.

@dikkenerd100 Afaik an empire is (usually, but not necessarily) a collection of nations ruled over by one people and its monarch. A kingdom is ruled simply by a monarch and doesn't involve one nation dominating any others. Depending on the period a kingdom is either one people/nation ruled over by a monarch, or a composite group of peoples united under a king (ex UK + Spain). There are many empires which were essentially like kingdoms but just wanted the bigger dick granted by imperial status.

Sweden beated russia in 90 % of the battles during the great northern war, even though sweden always were outnumbered. Even the russians are so proud for beating us one singel time in a big fight. How was sweden supposed to win at poltava?, 15 000 vs 45 000, and the swedes had almost no ammunition, and no food, they were exausted and in a very bad condition.
