Jonathan, thanks so much for this video. I was a runner in La Crescsenta for 26 years and ran Mt. Lukens most Wednesdays and Mt. Wilson and/or Switzer Falls many times. Brought back great memories.
@damnhippystfu That's really cool. I used to mountain bike in the San Gabriels and when I soar XC I always keep an eye out for hikers and bikers and now trail runners.
@n8tureboy Thank you very much! I've had more than my share of close calls. Some of these are posted on my HGVidFun account and some are here. I have > 100 videos and several great flights waiting to be edited. Now take some lessons and find out what it's like for you. You have an idea what it's like for me. Everyone's expereince of soaring is personal and unique.
Very nice shot, What recording modes did you use on the gopro? how did you point that acuratelly without seing the image? any zoom/crop work when editing?
Thanks! Mode r4 - 1280x960 px. Be sure to download the full res version on Vimeo at 1470x960 px. There's no zoom/crop on the edit. I lined up everything by eyeball. Almost got it dead center too. I have a special bracket I fabricated but I still have to align everything.
Generous good, Jon. Thinking about onboard tiny wind generator to charge those batteries during good lift. We call them AWECS or airborne wind energy conversion systems. Actually you with your HG form an AWECS. But an AWECS can have sub AWECS onboard. You are seeding a superhighway in our local ranges. Thanks. JoeF
@joefaust777 Thanks Joe. Love the superhighway analogy! I think solar panels w/ USB level voltage output would suffice to prolong camera recording time. Nice idea!
Thanks! Currently there's a shortage of willing XC pilots in the LA Basin. I'm part of the hard core group who try to promote it. How's the XC flying around San Antonio?
Thanks! I use Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 for the edits. First I transcode the mp4 h.264 file into MPEG2 using SuperAVConverter. It's extremely time consuming. I'm sure there's better software out there.
Put your hand upright between your eyes and move your head to the split screen line. Let your eyes relax and stare to the horizon, still keeping focus, so your right eye only sees the right half and the left left.
Now you're in 3D, it really works! You'll get nausea and a headache, but it's worth it.
I stick my face real close to the monitor and it feels like I'm inside the scenes. It is possible to make 3D video using the Victorian era stereoscope method you describe.
Awesome. Well done. Your flying skills are terriffic and your excellent video skills are a treat to watch. Thanks for the time and effort you put into documentarys. Safe flying and keep it, and everything else, up.
Thanks! That's the kind of thing I want to hear. Why not forward it to you local PBS station and ask them to host the full HD version? I can always do a different edit and narration.
Very nice video! Good naration! You are an excellent piolet. Looking forward to seeing more! Have a great holliday season and watch out for Santa!

@hanggliderrider Thanks. Have you seen all 130-someting of my videos? I know pilots who have watched them all at least once. Happy Holidays! Jonathan

Excellent video!
A question, do hanggliders on that altitude usually have an emergency parachute ready? In case something went wrong.
rydoskek 1 year ago
@rydoskek Thanks. Yes, we always fly w/ a reserve parachute. Good question.

@Win98Error Thanks. Yes, it's risky but there is more than enough knowledge and instruction available to keep the risks to a minimum.
