Marion recorded this years before Bessie Smith...Marion was a very different singer in the microphone era...like her no matter matter how she was recorded...
i PREFER BESSIE SMITH,S VERSION OF THIS SONG. THIS ONE IS GOOD ALSO. EVERY ARTIST HAS THEIR OWN STYLE AND IS TO BE COMMENDED.WHY MUST WE ALWAYS COMPARE? JUST ENJOY...........
I'm 22 and sometimes listen to really old music. I never knew those people, never seen their shows, never even knew that they existed.. I was born 40+ years after she died so it's so strange to me. A great music existed, great people with their own lives and stories.. now I can hear small fragments of their lives through their music. I might sound weird but I'm sure some of you have the same kinda sad feeling.
I am 37 and I never stopped admiring REAL music. Since this is a true live-recorded song (there was no overdub or mix-over in 1916) one can plainly experience a historical document. Even if this interpretation is not sung `bluesy´ and `dirty´ for my taste - I still prefer listening to this instead of suffering by any contemporial track from the soundware-outfit (means music-industry). Hmm, now I feel like beeing 73 - curious...
I've clicked on three Marion Harris videos today and all of of them had comments to the tune of "Bessie Smith did it better". Apples vs. Oranges. I dig Bessie but this is a nice version on it's on. Thank you for the post edmundusrex
This is good, but in my personal opinion Bessie Smith sang the hell out of it!!!!!! But thanks for posting, because anything is better than the crap artist crank out today.
Being 15 and in this era of time makes me feel very old fashioned.. I don't like much of the new stuff. I listen mostly to the older music. Just recently I have been trying to write a classical blues piece but I'm struggling. this video has certainly helped god bless. xoxoxo
is it just the recording equipment--ya know the reason why they all sound the same? why does older stuff sound weird? not being mean, I'm being serious!
@beckasha83 , it's a combination of the extremely primitive recording equipment (YOU ALMOST HAD TO SHOUT FOR IT TO RECORD THE NOISE) and the "big band" sound that was popular for this age of dancing. think of it like a really old version of club-remixs made for dancing, 'cept these were actually written to dance to.
@NYofthePacific I am 25 i tought im strange because I like this kind of music. good to know somebody in the twentys likes this music. it is just a blessing when you hear it... makes you calm and enjoy every second of life while listening to it.
@slimaslima I am in my late 20s and I love this music too! Never think you are strange. A lot of good music was made before 1980, find it, listen to it, and love it! Some of us were born too late...
I loved your video. I came across a site that will help your channel/video become more popular. It has really helped me out a great deal. The name is Tubeviews . Net

Quite interesting to listen to, but I must say I prefer David Lee Roth's version.
Guess I'm just a child of the 80's.
