This movie is ridiculous. No one takes sex so seriously. There is not such a thing as addiction to sex. You may get fed up, glutted because our lifes are boring and that's all. We have seen Sex in New York and everything was fun and now Mr Mcqueen shows us the dark side as Basic Instinct did in the 90's. Much worse is for the mind to fall in love and be unrequited. As for the relation with his sister is just selfishness, sheer individualism but nothing to do with a "dirty life".
@txikilin That's like saying there's no such thing as an addiction to the internet. This is the 21st century. Everything can be an addiction - don't try to narrowly define what an addiction is. You could explain any other DSM-approved addiction in a similar fashion. You certainly saw the film, but I don't feel as if you understood it - it's as much about modern life as it is about Fassbender's penis.
You know, I have to say that even though I haven't seen this movie, I'm sort of glad it got a NC-17 rating because it's got guts to show details about addictions (like this). Again that's just me talking so yeah

If you're into looking at reality vs expectations, this film also does plenty of that I mean it searches and shows 'people' for what they really are as opposed to who they show themselves to be in front of others. This is a great movie and Michael Fassbender's acting is very powerful yet subtle!! I have watched it three times in the thearter. Every time after I stepped out of the theater, the movie set me thinking about my own life, connection with friends and family though I am not a sex addict. He deserves the Oscar for his performance in Shame.

This was a very good movie, and I agree Fassbender deserved more Academy attention. Made me think of "Midnight Cowboy", I want to see more of him and McQueen.
I think academy voters saw some or maybe a lot of themselves in the characters in this film, whether in Brandon, his sister or Brandon's lame boss. Perhaps that's why Fassbender was not even nominated. It's definitely one of the most realistic and honest films I've ever seen, which is what makes it uncomfortable to watch but also a masterpiece. I am so grateful there are filmmakers like McQueen around and actors like Fassbender and Mulligan, who take courageous chances for the sake of art.

This is a really good movie. I think alot of the criticism comes from people who want a Hollywood movie, with a Hollywood beginning and ending. In France, the movie has been shown in theatres for nearly two months. I've seen it 6 times and I've become more and more fascinated by Michael. The movie is great, makes you feel uneasy and in love with this great actor (subtle and deep at the same time)

Michael Fassbender is not only incredibly sexy and beautiful but he is one of the finest actors of the moment - He is amazingly versatile - has anyone seen 'Fish Tank' or 'Hunger'? People go to the movies and their only options are like pre-chewed food: "we assume you only want to see Transformers so we won't even bother giving you the chance to select a movie for your self.'
