  • I started playing this again the other day after messing around with the old Pirates Gold. I managed to finish absolutely everything on swashbuckler, the game feels far too easy nowadays somehow, like if you get morgans large frigate or a good brig of war you're almost unbeatable, just chain shot ships till their sails come down. I still haven't seen a SotL yet though.

  • How the HELL did u get a ship of the line? I can NEVER find those on my game

  • @TheJrarcheologist there is a guide on Gamfaqs.com that tells you how to get one in a few months(gametime of course) just google sid meiers pirates ship of the line and its the first link

  • the best ship i've ever seen was a flag galleon,it's pretty much my only ship i don't plan on making a fleet for a while

  • Can u get the ship of the line on the psp?

  • Have you ever fought artillery when you were capturing cities? I´ve done everything in the game except that. It´s really annoying because I´ve played every difficulty, every era and every time there´s no artillery. I you have, do you know how much troops a city must have to use artillery?.

Btw, I´ve managed to turn all cities french, english and dutch. I´m not gonna do it with spain 'cause they own almost all of the cities.

  • @Matakshaman No, I've never seen artillery but I have heard about it. I don't think it's in the PC game. I have captured every town with forces ranging from half to double the size of their army. The biggest towns may have cavalry which must be dealt with in the forest. I find the best strategy is to only attack when your army is twice the size of the defenders. That will ensure you to have 1 group of officers, 2 pirates and 3 buccaneers. I mainly use buccaneers to kill the enemy.

  • @Thrym865 I found the artillery-sound in the music-folder but still no artillery. And there´s one more thing that I found. It says that natives are neutral and will fight for both sides. They´ve never helped me! Anyways, I use to send a pirate raid to the city. Then I attack the pirates after the raid, attack the city fort with my ship and then by land.

  • The Ship Of The Line is actually faster (in top speed) than the Brig of War in this game, but I'm wondering as to if it has slower acceleration than the Brig of War (I'm presuming that it is the case, as it is a fairly markedly larger ship than is the Brig of War). Do you happen to know about this, because Im just curious about it.

  • Do you get a ship of the line on some sort of secret quest thing or is it just random?

  • @Drollify Random, but only from wealthy non-spanish capitals. English, Dutch or French SOLs might be found in the triangle of St. Martin-Barbados-Curacao. French SOLs can sometimes also be found around Tortuga-Port de Paix-Leogane-Petit Goave. Any wealthy non-spanish capital should be able to spawn one. Don't expect a newly captured town to become a wealthy capital by itself - it's best to look in the above mentioned areas unless you do an extraordinary job to improve certain towns.

  • me and my sister went to beat up the manqius guy and we thought he had a large army so we got over 400 men but he had one group of people and he was easy to kill

  • for ur information ive COMPLETED THE FUKIN GAME, u just dont know how to man a ship, thats ur problem

  • @tiagandremo This ain't apprentice, loser. I've completed the game 10 times on swashbuckler. I've done about 10.000 ship battles.

  • @Thrym865 im just starting my SWASHBUCKLER runs lol

  • @tiagandremo nerd rage

  • @tiagandremo In all honesty, by the time you have a SotL, you would most likely just be fucking around instead of being serious about capturing ships, like in the video

  • no offence but you need better aim

  • @tiagandremo No offence, but I can tell you have never played this game. First of all, it is not possible to get 24 hits with a SOTL by aiming unless you turn your ship during the 2nd half of the broadside (and you will need your opponent to be trapped by the wind or unable to move away due to damage). Secondly, if you get a full hit with round shots, you will sink your opponent unless he's got a large ship with iron scantlings (in that case, he might be able to take 2 full hits).

  • Has anyone completed the game yet using one of the crappy merchant ships as the main fighting vessel?

  • omg youre slow at taking him out

  • I'm beating up against the wind most of time. I don't need to prove that I can do it faster. I am comparing ships here, should you have missed the point. I can do it in 30 seconds but not with a SOL. I'm trying to demonstrate that using a SOL against anything better than a single galleon is a bad idea. They are good for men and food in combination with a faster flagship on long journeys where speed matters.

  • Ok, so you were never in danger. I thought there was a critical point at 1:07-1:10 where they seem to have a chance by steering into th wind, but than, the wind turned to almost south and your speed increased rapidly. Is the SOL as fast as a brig when it steers into the wind? Anyway, amazing to watch, like any of your fights!

  • Amazing and very interesting fight! To me it seems that the Brig had a good chance to escape by running in the wind (as you wrote, Brigs have a speed advantage there). That fact the wind turned had come in handy for you. Otherwise, do you think you would have also got the Brig?

Anyway, it's such a pity that pirate-hunters are so much less aggressive than on the C64 Version of the game;)

  • Yes, technically they surrendered after the 2nd hit and tried to escape. But notice at that point, their max. speed seems to be 11 knots while I was going at least 14 knots. After the 3rd hit, their speed was reduced to below 5 knots. The chain shot and grape shots were not needed but I like to do it and at the same time it shows how powerful the SOL can be. In other fights, this would be the correct tactic (Montalban, Raymondo, Mendoza). They will always duel you, even if they lost their crew.

  • I can't find ship of the line anywhere... Where did you capture it?

  • Wealthy English, French and Dutch capitals around St. Martin down Barbados. If you attack their towns, they won't be large and wealthy enough to send one (it will always spawn as a "New Warship", possibly as a pirate hunter). It can be triggered to spawn if one of those nations hate you enough to send one. That seems to happen when they have put a prize of 30.000g or more for your head. Your era must be 1640 or later, from my experience.

  • Can you like zoom in on the fight?

  • No, there's a standard setting for that. However, as you approach the other ship, it will become visually larger. Especially with tall ships.

  • Okay, thanks.

  • Is this in war for profit... or what time thing is it in?

  • the best choice ofa fleet is peferably a small yet agile flagship for the 1st few fights... try transportig governors of a certain country to help boost their economy and they may spawn a mail runner that is powerful and agile

  • i like to have 2 ships. a heavy battle ship and a war canoe. the war canoe is for travelling and the heavy battle ship is for everything else.

  • i remember that with my best pirate i had four ships of the line at once. and by then i had done everything in the game, so i had a lot of fun with them, i got rid of them all when my crew got really angry with me so i sold all but my flagship ship of the line.

  • you call thas a fair fight take a brig and try to by real man, even in ship of line you sucks !!!!!!!! blame on you

  • Just because you can cruise around in a brig on apprentice and win fights, doesn't make you a real man. Try be a real man and win just one fight with any ship of your choice on swashbuckler. I challenge you. And who said anything about being fair? A real pirate must be selfish. Give me just one good reason to carry a brig in my fleet as a flagship. Only n00bs would do that. If you were an experienced player, you would know that carrying a medium speed ship doubles the travelling time.

  • It sounds like like your system isn't up to snuff. The only small things I've noticed is when dancing, it sometimes slows down on the last step probably due to loading the next animation. The guns animation in a sword duel always seems out of sync with the sound. AI movement in land battles is noticeably faster with a fast computer.

  • hey thrym865, does your ship battle gameplay ever slow down in certain situations, like if you're fighting two ships at once? mine slows down when fighting two ships, and sometimes when fighting a single ship. im wondering if my video card isnt up to snuff, or if the game itself slows the battle down for some reason.

also, i don't blame that brig for running. you had 450 crew and 48 guns. i'd run too.

  • i think its the game. i slow down to and iv got it on psp

  • nuts. i was hoping this was a console game. my POS computer is an AMD duron with only 807MHZ and 448MB of RAM.

  • It's available for PC, Xbox and PlayStation Portable. There is also the 1993 version called Pirates! Gold. The original game was released for Commodore 64, PC (ms-dos version) and Apple II in 1987. It has also been made for Amiga, Amstrad, Atari, Mac and more.

  • cool.

  • battleship versus destroyer lol.

  • The Ship of the Line is theoretically the fastest ship in the Caribbean if Running Before the Wind. However, due to Swashbuckler speed penalty and enemies' increased speed, it is pretty much equalled. Had he tried to escape direcly by Running Into the Wind, I probably wouldn't have been able to catch him.

  • seems like a nice game. what system?

  • My current system is an Intel Core 2 Duo 3GHz FSB1333 6mb cache on a Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L motherboard with 4Gb Corsair DDR2 RAM. The video card is Nvidia GF9600 GSO 768MB RAM. Game requirements are 1Ghz, 256Mb and Radeon 8500/Geforce 3.
