  • Tried it in the press today, gets stuck allot more, works though but easier to keep it moving in the hammer.

  • Hi, Will, I understand how it can do that. One thing that helps is to open the press a little more than is required to get the work in. That way you're not waiting for the press to push the hot metal. Also using stop blocks so it pushes the same amount each time. Some guys use a formula as a release agent to stop the work from sticking to the dies. It helps some, but I've been using coal dust, like in keeping a punch from sticking. Keep it simple! How many ton press are yu using? Randy

  • Hey Randy, good skills, that would make it work smoother. I use a graphite/water mix. Its around 30 ton. I quite often turn it right down when working with formers in there. The ram is wide though, because it has a long stroke. The ram is also free to turn. I use it mostly for punching, straightening fullering, upsetting, stamping shapes out etc. Its not powerful enough to forge out long bars, I use the hammer for that. BTW im a BABA member, great bunch, atb Will

  • I had a great time at the BABA Conference in Hereford years back. Do you know Tony Robbins, Mike Roberts and Dick Quinnel? Lots of talent there!

  • Hey Randy, thanks ! Yep It seems to be because the press sucks too much heat up. If I can fit it in the hammer its generally quicker. If not I turn to the press. I use a horizontal beast of a press for cold curving. Its rather old with leather washers! Very slow and precise. Your press looks perfect for forging. Nice and quick, I can see why you like putting that motor in the next room though. ATB

  • Great shop! I was at the BABA Conference in Hereford back in '89 I think.

Is your hammer faster than the press for making your triangular bars?
