The Order of the Arrow is all good now, apparently, but back why my brother went through it in the 70s, in Michigan, it was not good. It was a torture camp. Another scouting brother of mine spoke more fondly of his OoA ordeal, but still mentioned it was secretive to the point of being weird.
In the 80s when I got tapped out, I didn't go. My BS experience was rich and full. I went from being afraid of the water to a cert life saver in scouts. I didn't miss out on anything by not doing OA.
I have 2 questions... why do people feel the need to dress as Indians, and why does the OA have to act like a secret society? That doesn't seem like much of an honor society to me.

Well if your Not an OA member then don't encourage OA activities especially their Native "Pretending". OA or Not what the OA is doing is damaging to both native and non-native people. I have not heard of No OA organization partnering to help benefit Native Organizations or advocating for Native concerns. Instead they are a made up make believe pretend I'm an "Indian" program. U R either part of the problem or part of the Solution.
first of all I think you forgot to take your meds.
Second "Its their Nature" No! the youth in the OA are being taught this by who "Adults" who have themselves lost touch with a thing called "Reality" They did not grow up.
You seem to be part of the Problem rather than offering a solution you continue to add to the "Longevity of War". Earth is what we make it and the OA is not making it a better place that I can tell you. Just look at the Evidence.
The OA advocating war? unless there's something your not telling me. The OA is advocating "Pretending" and if since their whole thing is about pretending then I guess their pretending to "advocate war"
If your not part of the problem then what are you part of I would hope you have the common decency to know right from wrong and to have the courage to call out something that is wrong. Like the OA misrepresenting Native traditions and culture. So what are you part of ?
The OA is a load of bullcrap. I'm 33 now. I was a Life Scout and patrol leader when I was 15, two merit badges and a service project away from becoming Eagle. Then an election came and I wasn't chosen in, while goofballs with less advancement and leadership were chosen. After several weeks of listening to my buddies talk about camps where I wasn't allowed, and giving me their backs when talking about 'secret stuff', I lost interest in Scouting.
how was it?? i just got elected on thursday march 19 2009! i cant wait to go! im from troop 21 in dickson city pennsylvania btw! i enjoy scouting so much!
This Country is at a very pivotal point right now. Our young men need the Boy Scouts more than ever right now. I long for the glory days of Scouting. At the time, Scouting presented challenges for me, some were difficult, but always fun. I think it is fair to say that if it had not been for Scouting, I would not be whewre I am today. Thank you
It has been a long time since I was in Scouts. The one thing I regret was that I was unable to be "tapped out". Do they still tap out adult Scout leaders?
you do know that the Order is a "secret" Order. only the member are supose to know this stuff. your not supose to publicise it. all of us took an oath of secrecy when we were brought into the order.
I understand the uniform comment but come on, this is 2008. You can not ask any kid to wear dorky clothes. Kids develop and dictate the style of clothes yet old fogey Scouters insist on demanding that the kids wear oversized, bakky, ugly color, pants. even the switchbacks suck. Jeans should be completely acceptable as long as they are not dirty or ripped.
They should have good Scout pants for Courts of Honor, ceremonies, etc.
I disagree. They should never wear the Scout shirt unless they have the full uniform on. It's about pride and esprit de corp. Jeans are OK with a Troop t-shirt. I am currently a Scoutmaster (have been for 5+ years)
continued from previous: When I took over the troop and encouraged the scouts to wear the full uniform to all meetings - the effect on moral, unit cohesion, and pride were immediate. Now the Scouts police themselves and keep each other squared away - as they should. Sorry to rant - but any scout or trained scouter will not disagree. PS: fund raisers help get money for uniforms. Another pride builder that is. Keep up the dialogue. W.W.W.
Switchbacks cost between $35 and $40. Jeans cost between 20 and 30. That is what a mother in our Troop pointed out to me. Maybe you are talking about designer jeans. If you have a scout whos father just lost his job you cant force them to wear Switchbacks if they are saying jeans only cost $20 in Wal-Mart.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO excuse for a scout, and ESPECIALLY an ADULT to set the WRONG example. Isn't the OA the "honor roll" of Scouting? If there is a place for PROPER uniforming, it's in the OA.
The BSA has ONE official uniform, and sloppy blue jeans have no part of it !
If money is "tight"... have a fund-raiser to get the boys into the proper uniform and stop making excuses for Scouting looking like they are from the Rag-picker Patrol.
I am a section officer of SR-4N a member of the Alibuma Lodge. I agree that this video is a spoiler and that the food resembles that more of a brother's breakfast. the only video useful on here is the election video and the legend video. These would help recruiting new memembers. Now i ask of u my brothers to spread the news of our service to those scouts who are ready to become a fellow brother
What the...! I'm in Malibu Lodge but how do u get so much to eat for breakfast. All I got was a hard boiled egg and a pistacio(as far as I can remember)-also, weren't photos prohibited!?!?!? My initiation took place in the dead of night.
in my lodge, woaplananne 43 they were. i just got back from my ordeal. it is totally forbidden to tell non-members about the ordeal. the makers of this video should be punished
I just went through my ordeal this past weekend, I think that they shouldn't have this on youtube. Sure it doesn't represent all of the ordeal or its ceremnoy, BUT this would have ruined my ceremony a bit if I saw some of the things I did in the video. BTW I am in the Echockotee lodge.
Don't you people know all this is supposed to be secret. And anyone who feels like being a smart-allick and saying everyone knows what goes on anyway that's only because people refuse to keep it secret.
Furthermore, this video does nothing to reveal the contents or methods of the Ordeal. If anything, it promotes the spirits of Brotherhood and Cheerfulness that our Order so spectacularly represents.
I remember my Ordeal. I had a better time in Basic Training than that crap. I have a couple questions though: 1) How on earth did you get to eat so much for breakfast when guidelines call for half an egg sandwich, and 2) How did you take pictures? Electronics are prohibited for a reason: to keep the Ordeal a secret! Any current or former scout knows part of the draw to becoming selected as an Arrowman is the mystery behind the organization.
I am in Mic-O-Say, and i live in NW Missouri (Savannah) and no one around here is in OA, but i have heard from many people that are in OA what it is all about, and i dont see why it is the "National Honor Scouting Society." Their may be alot of people in it, but Mic-O seems to have more Scouting Values in it and it does alot more. I guess there may be alot more behind the scenes i havent heard about, but it seems like, boring. Someone tell me more about it,we can share customs of our tribes, ya..
I am here to answer all of your questions, goldkey2012. The OA experience begins by walking several miles in total silence to a fire ring where you are "tapped out". Then, you go on an "Ordeal" where you do arduous labor without food. This is also done in silence.
Then you are initiated at a fire ceremony with 4 bootleg indians: Meteu, Kitchkinet, Nutiket, and Allowat Sakima. They say some retarded shit, and give you the "admonition" which translates to: "to love one another".
goldkey dont listin to him he dosent know what hes talking about the oa is a wounderful thing i have done somany things like going to the ozark mountains in missouri and black hills in texas and i have meet great people
on the way u dont walk miles to a fire ring
and not talking o well u dont work without food you get food but not big meals you get breakfest and lunch with snacks inbetween but u have scant food the ceremonies are realy
cool and its fun if you stay in the oa just trust me.
getting into oa is a piece of cake compared to becoming a brave in mic-o-say though. I go to two summer camps and 1 does mic-o-say the other does oa so i have 1st hand knowledge of each (I'm not in either 1 though, I'm only a foxman)for mic-o-say, you have to be a fourth year and life scout and for oa you have to be I think 1st class and 2nd year. then with mic-o-say you're inducted as a brave then the next year you become a warrior and can earn more paint lvls. in oa there are 3 ranks i think
Please, in the spirit of the inductions process, remove this and all videos like it from YouTube. This is not something we should just advertise as arrowmen.
I am a member of Wisawanik lodge 190, and I agree, this is ment to be a somewhat secretive thing for nonmembers. it should be taken off. great job though!
Thanks for this video! I was'nt able to get picked! Guess I was'nt popular enough! I ranked where I needed to be, Only two a year from a troop of about twenty! Come on OA get your heads on! I basically get the OA! Its basically where you are put through some tests like making your own shelter, going with out food, serving! You guys act like it some secret society! You are taught spiritual things too! Hey I have a novel idea! Why don't I like learn from some true Native Americans
The Order of the Arrow is dedicated to cheerful service in a world where that is disappearing.
The Boy Scouts is not a mountain man program. Look:
On my honor,
I will do my duty
to God and my country
To God. God first. Nothing else. If you're not a spiritual person you cannot get into the OA or Scouts.
Listen. If you were a true Scout, a TRUE Boy Scout and not someone whose mommy wants it on their resume, you would get there by your own merit and not complain that you didn't.
You did ruin this for some people dude, You said it was Conclave which would be one thing to show but this is the induction ceremony... I agree, you should take it off or edit it.
The Order of the Arrow's ceremony is supposed to be mysterious and left unshown to non-members so they can enjoy this great experience without hearing a thing about it.
I WELL BE GOING THORUGH ORDEALS IN A WEEK FOR oa... I HOPE TO FULL FILL THE oa PROMISE, I AM ALSO AN EAGLE SCOUT AND I HOPE TO LIVE UP TOT HAT tHANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO STEVE
the OA is a cult. I was tapped out this weekend and immediately burned the block of wood they gave me. They starve you and make you spend a weekend in silence doing manual labor. n top of that, they're so damn secretive.
Well I don't know about your lodge but when I went through the ordeal they told us not to take any pictures or vidoes. I guess it hasn't been removed so far even with so many leaders and members saying you should of never posted it so I guess your not going to listen to me either.
hello, I am a Ceremony Team Leader from Pa-Hin Lodge. Your Ceremony site and Regalia looks really cool, but the slide show takes away from the wonder of being elected into the Order. Also, your team is taking away from the mystery by using scripts, to the boys being inducted and by the peaple watching the video
As a section officer from the central region I feel this video is inappropriate and may take away from the experiences of young Scouts.
This is the National policy on the matter:
The Order of the Arrow, recognizing the attractiveness of the unknown, utilizes the form of mystery. This shall not be interpreted, however, as justifying the withholding of any information regarding the Order from any person legitimately interested in investigating its nature, purpose, or method.
I agree with eaglescout5. Policy says that the ceremonies should remain mysterious. What is shown here completely shoots that down. As a ceremonialist and ceremonies chairman for my lodge, I must disagree with the appearance of the principles during the ceremony, but mostly of the pictures of them before the investing.
While ceremonies should not be spoiled for non-members, nothing here (although ties of brotherhood is awfully close) is not much more than a scout would see at a public calling out ceremony. However, many lodges, inc my own, don't give out where their ceremonial grounds are located; others, like Unami, are well known.
One last note, I believe the policy still is that we must have a written parental release in order to publish pictures of youth. I hope that the poster of this video has those papers in hand.
Maybe this video is in agreement with all national policies. I admit that it has been years since I was chief and the regulations have surely changed (what we did in those days we could never get away with today), but out of respect for our lodge, please remove it. Naguonabe is one of the oldest lodges in the nation and has a very rich ceremonial tradition that we should protect. This video doesn't help that.
As a former lodge chief for Naguonabe Lodge, I have to put my two cents in and say that this is out of line. Sure, the National committee states that OA ceremonies are "safeguarded," not "secret," however, this slide show fails to present Naguonabe Lodge in any sense of dignity and does not respect the special ceremonies that have been unique to the lodge and "safeguarded" for eighty years.
This is a great video and I hope it's used by Lodges to recurit for the order. I am Chaplain for my lodge and this video would be great to show scouts in the beginning of the scouting year to encourage them to want to be OA members.
This video doesn't show and signs or say any passwords. It shows nothing "secrective" about the ceremeonies. It shows boys working arduous tasks and being cheerful and earning their sash's. Good job!
I'd love to know the title of the song ans who does it.
i'm usrprised that most of these ppl aren't 2nd yrs, cuase thats really the first and only chance u need to get ordeal. all the boys i see here look older.
i just had my ordeal this weekend, we took down the tents at our summercamp, (camp squanto, old colony, tisquantum lodge) any of u guys on a ceremony or drum team, me and my friend gonna sign up for one of em
lol you guys are too caught up in the emaning of the order, I am a Brotherhood and current SPL of ym entire Troop, now see I look at the OA as a way to amke new friedns and to further your scouting experiences yes you can believe in the whole Indian thing but.....just remember in modern today mysteries and stuff liek that are just gone.
OA is a MYSTERY organization NOT a secret organization. WE try to make it mysterious so it can be enjoyed as a wonderful tradition. This does not show the three. or mention the principles or obligation, therefore it is ok. anybody may attend a ceremony but is discouraged. I am a brotherhood member and chapter chief
The only reason that the OA is "secret" is because we want to keep it a mystery to those who will go through the Ordeal, Brotherhood or the Vigil in the future. While anyone has the full right to see anything we do, we just ask people not to share it with others.
i agree this video is to revealing of the mystery of the oa. as a life scout and ordeal member, i think this video should be taken off. If i had seen it before i did my ordeal it would have spoiled alot of the surprise for me.
The video gives less away than what ordeal members talk about around the fires at night. As far as the statement of (secret society)there are none in scouting, they are not allowed in the scouting program.I am a brotherhood member, and a scout leader of many years. This video only touches the ceremony. The scouts and the leaders should be proud.
I am a Life Scout, and also a member of the OA, and I think that this video gives away too much information, about what the OA is. The OA is the Secret Society of the BSA, and I agree with the other Scouts in saying that the secrets should stay with the order and not out there for everyone to see.
According to BSA, in accordance with their Youth Protection Policy, there is no SECRET SOCIETY. If your lodge presents itself as such, they are in violation of BSA policy. *ANYONE* can attend an OA meeting. They are not closed or secret.
it doesnt give much away, however i think its time for it to go. it just shows a lot about the ceremony. not to mention, anyone who knows they are in this video should just be given a dvd or something. it doesnt tell which conclave it is so there is no way to tell. it really is ok (and a decent video sidshow) but its been up a year and a half so just take it off.
im a star scout and also a ordeal member i complety agree with the other scouts this should be tooken off becuse no one out side the ordeal should know anything about it befor they go though it
As a mother of an OA Brother and as a Troop Ctte Chairman, I can tell you this video gives absolutely nothing away. I think once you have gone through the Ordeal (I haven't) there is a lot more symbolism revealed. I bet the Scouts who went through this Ordeal love being able to watch this video and they'll know what is going on. I honestly couldn't tell you and I don't think any future Ordeal members could tell you unless someone broke the rules and talked about it.
I hope you got permission from the OA and every persons parents to post these videos on the web. From what I understand the OA does not like there events on the web.
I feel that this is an excellent video, that it gives positive memories to current members of their ordeal experience, and does not give away any information about the traditions of the Order of the Arrow. In my opinion, it is similar to the OA Elections Video that is used to conduct elections which shows pictures of the use of Regalia (costumes), and pictures of the ceremonies.
this video should be removed. if you know anything about OA, then you'd know in the "guide to inductions" where it talks about symbolic progression of knowledge. thanks for ruining it.
I do not think it gives anything away. The candidates know about the working around camp, they know about the Indian costumes used in ceremonies, and they know they will get a sash if they are approved for membership. This video gives nothing away about what is said during the ceremonies so it really does not give anything away.

If your not part of the problem then what are you part of I would hope you have the common decency to know right from wrong and to have the courage to call out something that is wrong. Like the OA misrepresenting Native traditions and culture. So what are you part of ?

The OA traditions are based on Indian legend, that does not make them wrong. They are designed to cause a profound revelation in member.

Thanks OA for ruining Scouting for me!

Thank you
myway43 2 years ago 4
It has been a long time since I was in Scouts. The one thing I regret was that I was unable to be "tapped out". Do they still tap out adult Scout leaders?

Yes, you must have about 15 days and nights of camping as a adult including 1 long turm camp.(summer camp).

Scoutmaster
humplik07 3 years ago
I disagree. They should never wear the Scout shirt unless they have the full uniform on. It's about pride and esprit de corp. Jeans are OK with a Troop t-shirt. I am currently a Scoutmaster (have been for 5+ years)
avermillion 2 years ago
continued from previous: When I took over the troop and encouraged the scouts to wear the full uniform to all meetings - the effect on moral, unit cohesion, and pride were immediate. Now the Scouts police themselves and keep each other squared away - as they should. Sorry to rant - but any scout or trained scouter will not disagree. PS: fund raisers help get money for uniforms. Another pride builder that is. Keep up the dialogue. W.W.W.
avermillion 2 years ago
My biggest peeve - besides scouts with untucked and unbutton shirts - is jeans with the uniform. Buy the switchbacks! They are cheaper that jeans.
avermillion 3 years ago
you know your not supposed to publicize the order. hell im a brotherhood and i know that
TWZMaster 3 years ago
I would completeley agree
JOSHGML1510 3 years ago
Switchbacks cost between $35 and $40. Jeans cost between 20 and 30. That is what a mother in our Troop pointed out to me. Maybe you are talking about designer jeans. If you have a scout whos father just lost his job you cant force them to wear Switchbacks if they are saying jeans only cost $20 in Wal-Mart.
BigOldScout 3 years ago
AMEN AMEN
There is ABSOLUTELY NO excuse for a scout, and ESPECIALLY an ADULT to set the WRONG example. Isn't the OA the "honor roll" of Scouting? If there is a place for PROPER uniforming, it's in the OA.
The BSA has ONE official uniform, and sloppy blue jeans have no part of it !
If money is "tight"... have a fund-raiser to get the boys into the proper uniform and stop making excuses for Scouting looking like they are from the Rag-picker Patrol.

Keeping things "secret" is the foundation of behavior for most molesters and pervs.

Someone tell me more about it,we can share customs of our tribes, ya..
goldkey2012 3 years ago
I am here to answer all of your questions, goldkey2012. The OA experience begins by walking several miles in total silence to a fire ring where you are "tapped out". Then, you go on an "Ordeal" where you do arduous labor without food. This is also done in silence.
Then you are initiated at a fire ceremony with 4 bootleg indians: Meteu, Kitchkinet, Nutiket, and Allowat Sakima. They say some retarded shit, and give you the "admonition" which translates to: "to love one another".
The OA is a cult.

getting into oa is a piece of cake compared to becoming a brave in mic-o-say though. I go to two summer camps and 1 does mic-o-say the other does oa so i have 1st hand knowledge of each (I'm not in either 1 though, I'm only a foxman)for mic-o-say, you have to be a fourth year and life scout and for oa you have to be I think 1st class and 2nd year. then with mic-o-say you're inducted as a brave then the next year you become a warrior and can earn more paint lvls. in oa there are 3 ranks i think

polarisRMKMAN 3 years ago
Wrong!
The Order of the Arrow is dedicated to cheerful service in a world where that is disappearing.
The Boy Scouts is not a mountain man program. Look:
On my honor,
I will do my duty
to God and my country
To God. God first. Nothing else. If you're not a spiritual person you cannot get into the OA or Scouts.
Listen. If you were a true Scout, a TRUE Boy Scout and not someone whose mommy wants it on their resume, you would get there by your own merit and not complain that you didn't.

hello, I am a Ceremony Team Leader from Pa-Hin Lodge. Your Ceremony site and Regalia looks really cool, but the slide show takes away from the wonder of being elected into the Order. Also, your team is taking away from the mystery by using scripts, to the boys being inducted and by the peaple watching the video
knifepiro 4 years ago
As a section officer from the central region I feel this video is inappropriate and may take away from the experiences of young Scouts.
This is the National policy on the matter:
The Order of the Arrow, recognizing the attractiveness of the unknown, utilizes the form of mystery. This shall not be interpreted, however, as justifying the withholding of any information regarding the Order from any person legitimately interested in investigating its nature, purpose, or method.
nitschu6 4 years ago
I agree with eaglescout5. Policy says that the ceremonies should remain mysterious. What is shown here completely shoots that down. As a ceremonialist and ceremonies chairman for my lodge, I must disagree with the appearance of the principles during the ceremony, but mostly of the pictures of them before the investing.
isulder4 4 years ago
While ceremonies should not be spoiled for non-members, nothing here (although ties of brotherhood is awfully close) is not much more than a scout would see at a public calling out ceremony. However, many lodges, inc my own, don't give out where their ceremonial grounds are located; others, like Unami, are well known.
robpa31 4 years ago
i hope to get order of arrow. im a first year so......... ya
Zeokill123 4 years ago
One last note, I believe the policy still is that we must have a written parental release in order to publish pictures of youth. I hope that the poster of this video has those papers in hand.
eaglescout5 4 years ago
Maybe this video is in agreement with all national policies. I admit that it has been years since I was chief and the regulations have surely changed (what we did in those days we could never get away with today), but out of respect for our lodge, please remove it. Naguonabe is one of the oldest lodges in the nation and has a very rich ceremonial tradition that we should protect. This video doesn't help that.
eaglescout5 4 years ago
As a former lodge chief for Naguonabe Lodge, I have to put my two cents in and say that this is out of line. Sure, the National committee states that OA ceremonies are "safeguarded," not "secret," however, this slide show fails to present Naguonabe Lodge in any sense of dignity and does not respect the special ceremonies that have been unique to the lodge and "safeguarded" for eighty years.
continued...
eaglescout5 4 years ago
This is a great video and I hope it's used by Lodges to recurit for the order. I am Chaplain for my lodge and this video would be great to show scouts in the beginning of the scouting year to encourage them to want to be OA members.
This video doesn't show and signs or say any passwords. It shows nothing "secrective" about the ceremeonies. It shows boys working arduous tasks and being cheerful and earning their sash's. Good job!
I'd love to know the title of the song ans who does it.

Fellow brothers,
OA is a MYSTERY organization NOT a secret organization. WE try to make it mysterious so it can be enjoyed as a wonderful tradition. OA.
brotherchan1 4 years ago
The only reason that the OA is "secret" is because we want to keep it a mystery to those who will go through the Ordeal, Brotherhood or the Vigil in the future. While anyone has the full right to see anything we do, we just ask people not to share it with others.

Hutch1267 4 years ago
According to BSA, in accordance with their Youth Protection Policy, there is no SECRET SOCIETY. If your lodge presents itself as such, they are in violation of BSA policy. *ANYONE* can attend an OA meeting. They are not closed or secret.

I do not think it gives anything away. The candidates know about the working around camp, they know about the Indian costumes used in ceremonies, and they know they will get a sash if they are approved for membership. This video gives nothing away about what is said during the ceremonies so it really does not give anything away.
