I think these veggie conversions are pretty cool. But I really wish people would choose something other than classy old Mercedes to make into a project car. Why experiment with and alter such a nice old luxury car? There are plenty of diesels out there to play with that aren't rare classic cars.
Again-I do think the technology is cool- I just cringe at how many of these Mercedes have been converted with cheap kits and messed up what was once a mint 30 year old car.
i luv looking at old merc engines, i mean i have one, and i'm still online looking at yours, btw instead of working on your car, watch topgear s1e1, watch the last 20 mins of it. and add hho to air intake
hey couple ideas you can have something that uses the coolant to heat the vegi oil also on my duramax diesel they have primer filter that has a built in fuel heater it gets the fuel considerably hot and i ran the truck with no modifications on vegetable oil before
Why dont you send a copper pipe coiling around the exhauxt which you can use to heat the oil thus waist heat...
Especially if the filter is going in the boot.
You can send copper pipe along your exhaust coiling which shoule be full of veg oil anyway. so when you switch across via switch wala! instant heated oil while heating the oil through the hot coils of copper from filter.
Why do you need to reg the fuel source? If HHO is fuel itself would it not attribute to the power or force injected into the engine? I don't think you need to a do anything except add the HHO into the intake, and the boosting effect into the chamber will reduce your need for more fuel. You end up needing less fuel to get the job done. The beauty of the engine you have in that car is the lack of electronic that would adjust the fuel mixture automatically. You have the right stuff to begin with.
Could this be the true motivation for the cash for clunkers program? Destroy the old bullet proof simple cars that can run on anything and have people only driving complicated computer controlled and finely tuned new cars that cant be modified to run on used vegie oil or wood gas. Computer controlled cars can easily be disable by an EMP

@ChrisPCrunchy Yup, need to watch out FEMA, Thats for sure!!! Nice Video you got here by the way!!! I just got my 85 benz and I will made the same thing you are doing right now!!!
Hello sirHOAX. I have been following you over the last year :-) Very interesting. I have one thought about using WVO. I have heard that it might soot the engine too much over time so the valves and piston rings misfuntion finally. Perhaps the MB diesel can deal with that, but I have tried water vapour injection on my VW TDI, with great results.
The nice thing about adding watervapour is the cleansing effect. My engine oil is almost clear after driving 3 months after last oilchange! Perhaps that could be a nice thing to add to your WVO project?
Yes I was considering a water injector that is getting electrolyzed through a chamber hooked to an extra alternator and extra bracket. Either that or just inject the water without the electrolysis.
We will see. Either way I will try this for sure. Its funny we think a like !
sounds like a bad rod bearing, and its valves are getting slapped the shit out of by the cam but that is no big . did you do a compression test? for 1500 it looks to be a good project car. cool shiza man .
These older Mercedes 'POP' a lot for some reason. Also its in a driveway and he noise is bouncing around the houses on either side. So its the microphone enhancing that sound.
This thing starts on a dime in the cold. So if there was something wrong with the engine it wouldn't start that easily.
What a great car. I got a 240D same year. Here are some fun facts the car that holds the world record for most miles on the odometer is one of these, being used as a taxi in Brazil, got something like 2 and a half million on Miles (or Ks). Also the frame from these things have been put back into production for those swank Chryslers that look like Bentleys.
PS keep up the good work on DIY power. Have you checked out the Mark Rodin's bifilar coil / his videos about them?
Yea but I think you have a 5-speed transmission that has over-drive. Should keep down that engine relative to 1800rpm at highway cruising speed if I'm not mistaken.
This car is non-turbo the same. Still a great car.
Sorry - off topic, but i love the old york style a/c compressor, my car used to have one of those, until all of the oil leaked out of it's internal sump and it failed.
The colors of the little caps (red & blue) on top of your compressor mean that the schrader valves have been replaced at some time - and that the car has been retrofitted to a new gas, most likely R-134a. That car's been well looked after. I envy your car!!
Thanks. This has been one of the best investments that has been made to date. It will pay itself off for sure once I get it fitted for the used veggie fuel.
Just have to take out the gas tank or find another one, and retrofit it with heating lines connected and insulated from the radiator or engine coolant lines. Will most likely have to foam fill the outside just to keep the cold air away from the heated pipes running to the rear of the car. Winters here are fairly cold at times.
Thanks for all of the information. Really love to learn all there is about these cars. Its going to be hard to get rid of this car, so it looks like I will be keeping it for awhile.
That link you referenced to, can not find it on Google. Send me a PM with the link in the subject if you get the chance. Regards, --S--
5) a good way to set up your WVO setup is to have a seperate tank i nthe trunk that has coolant lines running through it and also wrapped around the lines going all the way back to the IP and have solenoid valves to switch between fuel sources... that way you can get up to temp on Dino and then switch to Veggie... then before you shut it off, switch back to Dino for a few minutes to flush the injectors, esp. if you live somewhere with a real winter.
4) you def. wanna adjust valves and replace all filters as soon as possible, and some people swear by some stuff called "diesel purge" made in Germany by Liqui-Moly... should help to superclean out your injectors.
1) the fuel rack adjustment is inside of the IP (Injection Pump)..you have to remove the aft cover to get at it. prolly wont have to mess with that for a long while tho...
2) as for HHO, you def. would inject that into the intake of the turbo, somewhere on the black "u-tube" between the air filter and turbo would be good.
3) your non-turbo 300D has 88HP, the 240D has 67, and the turbo 300 has 110-120 depending on year.
In your discription you said Bio-diesel. I think you wanted to say Bio-fuel, because there is a big difference between Bio-Diesel and burning straight veg oil.
Tru Bio-Diesel needs no conversion. to the diesel engine.
FYI - HHO might burn too hot... seize up the engine, may need a cooling mod for that... and you'd need some kind of carb to deliver it... can't see how you could control the feed into the injectors... if you are going to inject it, better into the air intake...
Yea these cars are top-notch. To think they will probably outlast the brand new S500 $120,000 Mercedes. Even with the 30years on top of them.
It came from a different era where they actually cared about the longevity of the car in question.
Quality over Quantity. Now its the other way around. That engine is extremely heavy, extremely thick gauge walls. Its no wonder it last so long. The new diesel engines are light as a feather.
Yea it did have it but was disconnected and hardwired because the vacuum functions have plenty of leaks in the hoses. Can't win them all. Need a garage kept to find a fully functional version of this car.
If you really wanted to probably could restore everything back to its original. Just not sure if its worth the time. The WVO-BioDiesel is tho. ;-)
Yeah you right. I would maybe fix it, if it would be in everyday use...I think you know what mean driving when there is hot day outside and you swet in car when no AC.
Nice car anyway, that soung of engine sound like it should be...smooth and rytmic :D
No the AC works. Its just hardwired ON/OFF but not climate controls as in regulating temperature. Would require the vacuum valves to be fixed. So it was easier to hard-wire it either ON or OFF. ;-)
Hoax My friend and I bought the same car back in the 90's ,,he has over 420K on his and I have over 300K on mine. Just keep the oil clean and do a tune up now and then and they will run forever. A tune up just consist of doing the valve lash and all the oils.. The only thing is the rubber stuff goes away.. I have the 300 TD
I have a 1981 Nissan Datsun pickup that has an ammo box on the front bumper inside the box is a small trash can with a pillow case for the first filter. Then it runs through the second filter which is a regular oil filter. The oil is heated by a radiator line. So when I reach around 200 degrees I flip a toggel switch that changes my pump from the stock tank to the wvo tank. I hope to post vid soon with hho added also and some other goodies. Someone asked me when I showed them "is that legal". :)
Sounds like an interesting set-up. Be sure to post the video of it. Like the older cars better than the more modern ones myself.
That is the thing with the 1978MB-300D have to have relays/solenoids to switch back and forth. Going to just use a small reserve tank with Diesel for cold starts. Hopefully have this thing autoswitch over on temperature. Or manual switching. Either way its all plumbing this thing together with various fittings. That plus using the engine coolant for preheating also.
Yes I have spoke with many owners of these cars that swear by them. Really can't wait to start messing with WVO and possibly HHO-boosted to see if there is any gain on MPG.
bullet proof .got a rover 620 turbo diesel running on pure skimmed off top waste garage engine oil.using it for a heat source for our garage and genny and battery charging . no filter .needs a sniff of brake cleaner to get it started.
Yea that is the thing if you have a source of the oil its great opportunity to make use of it. Either a generator, or transportation, home-heating. Honestly that is a great idea, home-heating plus generating energy.
Plus with the future of algae farming. 1/10th an acre can get 10gallons of oil per day.
The smaller 1.6L Rabbit Diesel engine makes for a great generator, boat engine also.
Now all I need is a 55-gallon tank in the trunk. 55*30MPG? 1650Miles per tank? Ouch. Can't wait. ;-)
i have the exact same car, i was wondering if i could selll it as an antique. I would REALLY appreciate it if you write back sir.
