I would honestly say they were just really unlucky, it's not as bad as you think. If you are a solid grade 4 paddler you wont have any issues. Be aware after the gorge above the bridge. There is a short 50m rapid that was better run down the right than left.
But over all its a great run, first time is a bit overwhelming, but you will find your self doing it over and over again..
@JeeKayak - I think it was a shock thing and some of them may have pulled their deck already. We cam down right after them and were shocked to find 3 swimmers on a steep wall in the process of rescueing a boat that was pinned further down. To be honest i remember doing this river many times when i was younger and i swam the whole thing about 3 times and i've seen a friend swim it recently several times so its not that bad. Would call it a grade 4. Very Intimidating as there is only one way out!
Probably overtalked, like a lot of other features on these rivers. Scouted from above, but not ran yet, maybe next year, hopefully :)

I dint understand why the other 3-4 kayakers swam.. They flushed upright and from what I know...this is a stout 4+ gorge.. Not a happy place to swim.
