Talk about rambling on and on...................I once heard a fellow actor say when Dennis was not acting/ on film- he would be so stoned when eating out his head would all of a sudden fall in his plate.
Hopper grew into a fine actor. At the time he worked in Rebel & Giant, James Dean was light years ahead of him in terms of a natural yet imaginative style. Dean was incredibly gifted with an acute magnetism.
Before he died, he was about as self-effacing as anyone ever, If that's the word I'm looking for, he was saying how he learned nothing from acting and that his work was nearly garbage and there were no moments on film that people would fondly remember, all this, and sadly, he did pass away and it's like people were expecting it, and it's just sad to me, He was one of the best

When Hopper was filming The Last Movie in Peru in 1971, some peruvian producer told once he was wearing the James Dean ring (the same one Dean had the day of his fatal accident) so there were some risks on location where they almost had a terrible road crash so Dennis pull off the ring from his finger and set it down his seat claiming it could bring bad luck. he forgot the ring and the producer months later visited him in LA and he gave back the ring. Why are YouTube comments sections filled with so many people who think they're experts on recognizing various forms of intoxication? 9 times out of 10 they're talking out they're ass! lol
Before I get any wacos or crazies responding to my comment below I was just joking and responding to some of the idiotic responses in the comments section. Life is short so don't take it too seriously!!!
Not too long ago I was in europe for an open call to test for an adult film. I couldn't get the character down right the way they wanted , just couldn't. It was late one night and I just happened to be watching TNT and "Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf " was on. I went out after watching that movie and brought the dvd home and studied the characters hour after hour , day after day. I attribute this to what followed. Great film for any aspiring thespian whether in rags or in the buff.
You are exactly correct. Hopper was trained by one of the best-- Lee Strasberg-- and knows his craft. I once saw him use affective memory and cry on cue. Some of these YouTube dolts don't know jack about acting craft.
@MrWaynejohn - think less, feel more, do more - the more you relax into self and reality the greater your chances of connecting to your real self and therefore feeling always-good about yourself - external pain and pleasure will still come your way but you will handle both a lot better
@chuobio - once you accept the real world you then just act out what the script requires - what emerges from you 'in that moment' will be more spontaneous, more 'authentic' and more likely to come from your self\soul rather than your mind\memory - it is more likely to be fresh and convincing albeit unfamiliar to the viewer's expectations - the whole idea of 'method acting' is to try and by-pass the mind\memory\habit to achieve a greater degree of realism and 'truth'
@chuobio - Dennis Hopper was the best in the world at his craft combining as he did the 'method', 'vital acting' (which was what the 'method' was trying to achieve ie complete by-pass of mind\memory) and 'traditional' acting (the graphical interface of acting) - when he met James Dean I think he realised that James was more 'vital' than him and so set about trying to incorporate it into his craft - Pacino was probably No.1 in the 70s for a while, but pound-for-pound I'd go with Dennis Hopper
@sanjuz Ahahaha I think it's just part of the thing. I was surprised at how many people commenting on this video actually get what he's talking about. Look at an interview with almost any similar actor - J.Depp, Pacino, Daniel Day-Lewis - and it's always impossible to understand what they're talking about, unless you have some context or experience or understanding of your own to frame it in. It's just part of the thing, really.
@AashiquiTheri Nah, I get Johnny Depp, man, I get him! hahaha He was starting out in teen sex comedies off the bat, then took a non-chalant view of the work, then he got the role of his lifetime, so much so, he recently admitted he'd do Pirates over and over with no end in sight!
just mho but I dont think drugs are what really made dennis hopper like this. if you notice in rebel he is the one that has the looney laugh in the bad gang. the laugh that gives that unnoticed but hey someones psycho here feel. and he was only about 18 or so? not much time yet to be a druggie, well in 1955 anyway...
he might have been more of a druggie in 1955 than he was in 2005. from what i hear, there was some good pot going around during the fifties. i'm sure he and james dean shared a spliff or two........................
Great interview. Dennis Hopper doesn't look bad at all - he is 47 years old here. I am convinced that actors discussing the esoteric process of acting always sound a bit demented to the lay person.
Umm, did i say it "mattered?" I was simply making an observation, not making a judgment on his acting abilities based on this. Clearly this makes me gay. I hate arguing with angry teenagers such as yourself.
Well said. I don't understand some people/kids either. Even IF they're angry teens. This generation is so rediculous. You say this or do that and you're quickly marked "gay". I mean what is that seriously?
Words of wisdom, you gotta see the guy if he has a gun. When I had the gun, I was supposed to see the glass and accidently shot my wife. That was a long time ago. Yeah, and I was also smoking a cigarette, that didn't help. +++The Saint+++ W S Burroughs

extremely profound comments -
1. "do, don't show" means relax into your real self
2. "avoid matching" means live in the real world rather than constantly translating between your mind and the real world
3. "reinforcing" means that doing 2. helps you do 1.
is it Dennis or is it the YouTube commenters that are on drugs?

When an actor rehearses over and over they kill it.
Method actors who discuss every move, kill it.
Discussing theory and trying to make meaning of art, kills the magic.
