@carbidutz Usually your prompt includes your machine's host name. Unfortunately, a lot of the time Mac OS X decides to automatically chose this for you.
it all worked very well until you started on the copying, moving and renaming things. my terminal keeps telling me: "No such file or directory" ..which NOT true.. so now I'm wondering do I have to do something else? be in the same directory I'm copy pasting from?

Any idea how to fix a malfunctioning dock (I can erase and move icons but once I restart the changes don't take. @macheads101 There is, but if I'm not mistaking, it's called the command prompt. Instead of typing shellscript in there, you use a 'language called DOS'. Some commands, such as the 'cd' commands are the same.
@ohbear64 That is not terminal. Terminal is a pipeline through which one executes a shell such as sh, bash, etc. Cmd is the windows command line, setup to behave like DOS. They are completely different things. Just because they are both command lines doesn't mean that they are the same thing.
@MegaInsaneMusic Normally this is caused because you're computer has been running for too long without being rebooting. Simply shutdown and restart your computer. Closing your laptop doesn't SHUT IT DOWN, it just sleeps it.

@macheads101 I am sorry but, I am posting a second msg and it seems as though its not posting, however please explain how to open or where to find Nano.
@thegabytzu97 All of these things are possible. Why not watch the rest of my terminal lessons to learn how to do these things? If you don't want to, mv is the rename command, and open is the open command.
Girls who use Linux/BSD, etc are sexy. ;) MacOS It is composed of code developed by Apple, as well as code derived from NeXTSTEP, BSD, and other free software projects. P.S. @FUCKINROCKIT UNIX is an OPERATING SYSTEM originally developed by AT&T. The file system structure on Mac OS X machines happens to resemble the way that it was on that of BSD. Also, remember, GNU is not UNIX! Mac OS X definitely is. The kernel of Mac OS X is also known as Darwin, a hybrid of BSD, Mach, and Apple's IO/Kit. The Bourne Again Shell is GNU, but not the operating system. Learn your stuff, bro.
@jsnyderdesign The operating system is of a UNIX structure in that it is based off of BSD. The shell (terminal) that you are using is Bash, which is part of the GNU utilities that come with mac. So, Mac is UNIX, but terminal is partially GNU (Gnu's not unix).
To be honest when I heard your voice I thought "oh hell, another kid tech video" but your knowledge on the subject was very good and easily explained. Now I'm so excited to learn more stuff about Linux terminal even though you're teaching it from a Mac XD
Hmm! If I'm using the command mkdir in the location "Desktop" a message appears, which says "mkdir: Test: Operation not permitted" The same when I was trying to make a fun prank! Maybe Apple put the security higher in Terminal?

i get everything your talking about but what it better about using all these commands when you could just do all of this out of terminal, in my opinion faster, just dragging things around and using hotkeys? are there things you can only do in terminal?
@nytefox0 There are specific tasks that you can only do from a terminal. Of course, these tutorials are also useful if you have to interact with a unix machine over ssh or telnet. For the normal user, terminal is something that is not necessary needed.
@macheads101 I've Also found that this is usefull for running programs that otherwise could not be run from just the app bar. example. i play minecraft and there is a hack for it. and the hack also works with mac. but it's a bit more complicated. i've figured out how to run the hack using terminal and it works quite fluently :D
in the title bar for you terminal, it says Terminal - perl but isn't it supposed to be Terminal - bash? Overall, great lesson, learned from a good person who doesn't sound depressed or stupid.
What does it mean by when someone say RUN this in a terminal?? Someone told me to run the following: sudo dscacheutil -flushcache to flush my cache. What does that mean and how do i do it?
I accidentally deleted my first part of the terminal. So for example, the 'alex-nichols-macbook-pro:~alex$' (I don't have that anymore and don't recall what it originally stated. Is there a way to retrieve it?
@kloi19123pwn that's not completely true. There are many unix-specific commands for terminal that do specific functions that do not exist in windows. For instance "gcc". There is no use for this command in windows. Another example "ln", there is no use for this since window's NTFS does not support symbolic links.
@macheads101 Then I will say: Yup, Cmd doesn't have does commands because it won't need them...
But Terminal and Cmd is the same concept and they have the necessary commands for Mac/Windows and that is why I say that they are pretty much the same
Nice man, you seem very young, I had to wait a long time to get my hand on a computer at you age, congrats (people, really, try to learn and stop doing so stpd opinions, all the software is easily re-installable, and its IMPOSSIBLE to break hardware from the terminal, it's a fact, and a hardware design law)
My Terminal is like broken? I open it and its all blank with no letters at all and when I try to type a command nothing happends it acts like text edit.
Terminal you have to be careful but as long as you arent a retard you shouldnt do too much damage. Terminal for me is fine because its similar to terminal on fedora though yum does not work. ls and a lot of the other commands are very similar to linux
i can do the virus thing now where you make that file that kills everything the 'killall Dock' kinda stuff lol did it to my friend and he went psycho lol had no idea what to do lol i just quit terminal and he was like... oh...
@YoursTruelyMe2 you sound like someone who doesn't know what you are doing. Terminal is not a problem. It's not like opening it automatically gives me root privileges. It doesn't allow me to do much that I can't do with graphical software anyway.
@macheads101 The beauty of a unix system is it doesn't automatically give the administrator root privileges like Windows does. Go messing around in Windows command promt and you CAN mess something up. In Unix you actually have to sudo su to get to root. Good video.
@JustinoFundido yeah and the underlying feature there is that no account on unix is truly an admin except for root. You still need a password for an account with Sudo privileges, unlike in windows where your account is an admin by default.
@macheads101 Your Voice hasn't even broken so dont think you knwo everything about terminal because you can completly trash your computer ,trust me i'v seen it happen
@YoursTruelyMe2 No not really, logically all you have to do is reinstall OSX if anything fatal happens. Plus Terminal is not a program it's simply a CLI (Command line interface).
@camgptt simply put, you can tell your computer what to do like open programs. But if your crazy good you can change settings on your computer that will make it awsome.
Thank-you so much! I have been using command prompt on my windows 7 laptop until my comp broke because I opened a malicious batch file. I am having to use my grandmas mac, and I needed a substitute for command prompt.

sigh... terminal is much more cooler then cmd
Tidus019 1 year ago
@Tidus019 Cmd can to exactly the same things as Terminal... If you use it right.
kloi19123pwn 1 year ago
@kloi19123pwn that's not completely true. There are many unix-specific commands for terminal that do specific functions that do not exist in windows. For instance "gcc". There is no use for this command in windows. Another example "ln", there is no use for this since window's NTFS does not support symbolic links.
macheads101 1 year ago
@macheads101 Then I will say: Yup, Cmd doesn't have does commands because it won't need them...
But Terminal and Cmd is the same concept and they have the necessary commands for Mac/Windows and that is why I say that they are pretty much the same
kloi19123pwn 1 year ago
@kloi19123pwn well yeah just making sure that you weren't confused since you did use the word "exactly" even though they are not exactly the same.

I love the terminal. This is where I learned Unix from initially, which helped me get a job. Go figure.

Could anyone help me what the hell is going on.

How old are you, 5?
macheads101sucks 1 year ago
Terminal you have to be careful but as long as you arent a retard you shouldnt do too much damage. Terminal for me is fine because its similar to terminal on fedora though yum does not work. ls and a lot of the other commands are very similar to linux
Xrayder23 1 year ago
DAMN, you sound young in this video.

i can do the virus thing now where you make that file that kills everything the 'killall Dock' kinda stuff lol did it to my friend and he went psycho lol had no idea what to do lol i just quit terminal and he was like... oh...
MishMash987 1 year ago
Be careful, messing with terminal can permanently trash your computer. It's not a program you should just play with.
YoursTruelyMe2 1 year ago
@YoursTruelyMe2 you sound like someone who doesn't know what you are doing. Terminal is not a problem. It's not like opening it automatically gives me root privileges. It doesn't allow me to do much that I can't do with graphical software anyway.
macheads101 1 year ago 8
@macheads101 dam
crocman2cool 1 year ago
@macheads101 The beauty of a unix system is it doesn't automatically give the administrator root privileges like Windows does. Go messing around in Windows command promt and you CAN mess something up. In Unix you actually have to sudo su to get to root. Good video.
JustinoFundido 1 year ago
@JustinoFundido yeah and the underlying feature there is that no account on unix is truly an admin except for root. You still need a password for an account with Sudo privileges, unlike in windows where your account is an admin by default.

@YoursTruelyMe2 I agree with everyword your saying.
@macheads101 Your Voice hasn't even broken so dont think you knwo everything about terminal because you can completly trash your computer ,trust me i'v seen it happen
daniel0runescape123 1 year ago
@YoursTruelyMe2 No not really, logically all you have to do is reinstall OSX if anything fatal happens. Plus Terminal is not a program it's simply a CLI (Command line interface).

awesome - by far the best terminal tutorial i've seen - wasn't gimmicky or covered bullshit tricks - good foundation - thanks!
