Wonderful, although the voice was a short one, her breathing certainly when younger was all over the place but this shows that having a great voice and only voice does not mean having a career. this is a wonderful example of great operatic acting. It shows what is missing in our so called Diva's today. Crespin and Jurinac in this were as compelling.
Please note that in my channel I have uploaded Lotte Lehmann's 1939 performance of the Feldmarschallin from the Metropolitan Opera, beginning with the Monologue (Da geht er hin) and through the end of the 1st Act. Risë Stevens is the Oktavian. Enjoy!
as the new generation of students and upcoming professionals in opera, we absolutely need more shit like this to watch. all i can say is THANK GOD for youtube!
the way she moves with the music!. Of course Strauss would have rehearsed her, right?

Meeting up with Otto Klemperer she said she was off to sing the Marschallin. "The Lehmann vesrsion or Strauss's" was his laconic reply!!!

All of a sudden the Monlogue seems a Brecht-Weill piece! Hehehe. She's sooooooo great.

I wish I could have heard her sing ANYTHING from Der Rosenkavalier.
I can't believe Hitler had a hit out on her because she was Jewish.
She is a very brilliant and talented lady... G*d I wish I could have heard her sing this when she was in her PRIME!

You are right. Lotte Lehmann was not Jewish. But she left Nazi Germany because she did not agree with the way people where treated during this years.
I believe that she did not come back after the war.
