Totally exaggerated and at times even made up. Anyone can go to North Korea, including Americans. Fill out a form. Travel to Beijing to meet your tour guide, and fly over. The only preparation time you need is to arrange your Chinese double entry visa. You have to have a guide with you in the DPRK, but they don't hassle you and are perfectly welcoming and friendly. As awful as the country may be for North Koreans, it's a very safe country to visit as a tourist.

Traveling to North Korea is not at all that dramatic or difficoult. There are numerous agencies in China that will arrange your visit to Pyongyang. You do need a guide and can't go anywhere without him / her but he makes it sound like that guy is a soldier who is bossing them around. I have a hard time believing him all the other things. I think he is massively exaggerating. . .
