Hey guys I'm a newbie starting out, so forgive me if I sound stupid but how would I connect a mac to the cdj's ? Would I need a USB cable going from my mac into both of the cdj's or just once ?
@TheTonydhillon I suggest you get a USB hub and attach the CDJs to that. Then plug in the hub to the mac and you're ready to go! Just watch this clip by pioneer which will illustrate it: watch?v=VZ6n47f5Pj0
I agree that most people can't distinguish 16- versus 24- bit resolutions over home equipment, but as a drum and bass man myself, I know that recorded 808 sine basses and many acoustic bass samples played over my 18-inch Cerwin-Vega cabs at 16-bit resolution and 24-bit resolutions, courtesy of my Titanium sound card sound different to even casual listeners. Us drum and bass men (and women) listen most intently to the bottom ends of the spectrum at high SPL, where wave differences show the most.
@ydabom The noise floor for 16-bits samples is at ~96dB, while for 24-bits it is at ~144dB. That's why you can hear quantization noise at high SPL. Anyway, it is almost impossible to have more than 110-120dB dynamic range on analog audio networks, considering the weakest ring of the chain.
You can totally hear the difference between the 16 Bit and 24 Bit material in a large Hi Quality system like EAW or a Funktion 1 setup. The detail, clarity, and noise is what sets them apart.Lower lows and sizzling highs that stay clear and not all washy is why 24 Bit is the way to go dude.
the only good thing about the 24 bit is because the effects suck a lot of the file quality,,,, so in 24 bit they're able to process effects on the file without loosing any quality of the sound... this is kind of difference you can hear I think!
For those who have no clue about DAC, go see why Wolfson Electronics is considered the cream of the crop for processors. Even u can't listen to the actual difference by ear, i assure u on a $1 million sound system, having a hi-end DAC in your cd player is impressive.
This is so non relevant. A mastering engineer would probably not be able to hear the difference on a system like that at high SPL's. On studio monitors or large PA's - studio monitors are nothing like large PA's
It makes me curious focusing on the DAC quality, as don't Pioneer recommend that you connect CDJ's to the DJM-800 via S/PDIF? (thus utilising the DJM-800's DAC and not the CDJ's)
That is easy to say. I have searched and found no such tests. Please show me such a test of someone who can distinguish music at 24 bit from 16 bit resolution.
@andreasm The difference between 16 bit and 24 bit is quite noticeable... yet not for heavily mastered tracks since you use up your entire dynamic range that the 24 bit is giving you...
Essentially you are lowering the digital noise floor. The advantages typically come for unmastered highly dynamic music such as classical and jazz. This is also why recording music at 24 bit makes sense since you are using multiple tracks.

most people cant distinguish anything past 320 kbps

@withaspoon94 Most people can't even notice a 128 kbps MP3 because they're drunk, or the PA system sucks ;-)

@TexZK lol i guess so but id rather not have my hi-hats and snares sounding like a frying pan

I thought DAC stood for dark african cock. Well, guess i'll be better off not buying this deck then.

Fuck sake...I am unsubscribing to djmag. It's like the YouTube version of spamming the number of vids that are uploaded.

I'd love to see a double blind test of audiophiles distinguishing 16 bit PCM from 24 bit PCM audio :)
