i love bass singing,,,been once a bass singer but now a baritone,,,my voice fits better in baritone,,,favorite bass singer george younce not just his voice but more of his stylee,,,,wanna see him in heaven and sing bass with him,,,
WOW! These guys are great. Have been a fan of Southern Gospel for 40 years. If you like good bass singing listen to Lonesome Road by The Rangers this guy is awesome also. One of the best I have never heard of. A very good quartet & the bass singer has a great bass voice. He moved into my top 5 after hearing him. In no certain order my favorites would be Tim, JD, Charlie Gilmore, George Younce & Big Chief. Take a listen & I think you will be blessed as I was.
Really? I've always found JD's voice to be more bassy than London's voice (London is still boomy, but not as much as JD). Plus, J.D. can go 2 or 3 notes lower than London. That's why I put JD on bass and London on baritone...they're both awesome bass singers, though. What do you think of my lineup for bass singers who are alive today?
fun but there are many good singers microfon which can be amplified up to the beautiful sounds, in particular Carey but reality says they are not much without amplification
Wow I'm amazed how people can argue over gospel music and call each other names. Guess this is why some people drive by several churches to get to the one where they worship. Anywho I vote Mike Holcomb best bass and Archie Watkins best vocalist EVER. I don't know about singing lessons and what not but I do know they both sing for the The Inspirations and I think they're good people too.
Some consider C2 to be "the" marker for a bass singer. E2 is really more of a Baritone note. You can sing lower, but it takes lots of practice, and the right technique. I can almost hit a C2 in my "modal register",(that's regular speaking/singing voice). On a good day I can hit a G1, or C1 using my "vocal fry" register (that's the lowest register possible for a human being). On a REALLY good day I can hit the bottom of the piano with vocal fry.
I have been doing alot of work on my bass vocals and I am able to get lower notes, than I was able to previously, but I think that it's mostly down to breathing technique, as I know it's possible for a singer to extend their vocal range, in either higher and/or lower notes, it's really a case of how the individual goes about this :)
I hope to start up or join a quartet to sing bass, but only if I can perfect my bass vocals first :)
Well that's not completely true. Granted you kind of have to be born with a bass voice, but you can gain low notes with proper technique, training, and lots of vocal warmups. I've seen sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones, bass baritones, and bass singers gain lownotes just from proper vocalizing. Not only low notes but a more refined and stronger sound, as well as more high notes. Vocal warmups are your friend, lol. And lots water. Well, there's my two cents.
just to add to that, if your voice is in the middle of its change, even if you're sure you can get those bass notes, don't try to sing them a whole lot until you're sure your voice change is over. you can ruin your voice that way
Exactly...I'm 20 and I have a bass baritone voice, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I'll keep it. My voice won't be fully matured for a long while.
The last lineup they finish with is Gene McDonald singing tenor, Eric Bennett singing lead, Jeff Chapman singing baritone and Mike Holcomb singing bass. . . . .Hope this helps...
Tim storms is the current lowest bass singer. But he does not sing southern gospel. I do disagree with your statement that Mike can go lower than JD. JD could go lower than Tim Storms, Tim currently holds the Guiness Book record for Lowest voice on earth.
E1 is lower 13 half steps than F2 which is the lowest note in the standart bass range. Bass singers though can hit E2 as well, which is half tone lower, also E2 is the 6th open string on guitar (not E3 as GP 4 shows), and not 4th open string on bass guitar which is actually E1. I am a baritone and I used to be able to hit F#2 (now I can go lower) and since I thought it was F#3, I though I have an alto range and I have a voice like a girl ^_^
I am 21 and I have sang bass since I was about your age, but just make sure you get taught correctly because you can really mess up your voice before it hits it's prime. I was taught that a male's voice doesn't mature until late 20's
Nope, I don't think so, what they do is actually utilizing the other pair of vocal folds, which kinda creates a different timbre of the sound, making a subharmonic, which sounds an octave lower than your normal voice. I can do that too as well btw, its not hard, everybody can learn it, lool up throat singing
sorry i know your comment is like 4 years old, but I just wanted to clear up that falsetto is when there is no cord closure (open/part, lots of air escaping). While the notes he's hitting are not very powerful, you can still hear closure, so it is indeed mostly headvoice/mixed voice, but without falsetto.
Unbeeelievable!! I've only met one person in my life that can sing all 4 parts on tune and without straining. This is the highlight of all the NQC clips I've seen.

This was awesome!!! Loved how they blended together.
If I could pick 4 gospel bass singers to make a quartet and sing at an NQC, these would be my choices:
Richard Sterban on Tenor, Tim Riley on Lead, Mike Holcomb on Baritone, and Paul David Kennamer on Bass.
And if I was gonna line up 4 bass singers who have gone home, here would be my choices:
James Wetherington on Tenor, George Younce on Lead, London Parris on Baritone, and J.D. Sumner on Bass.
GamingDrummer89 2 years ago
I agree with Big Chief tenor, Younce on lead, but I'd switch J.D. and London Parris

How can someone train their voice to reach deeper bass notes? :)
I'm at baritone bass, but I'm wanting to achieve to be able to sing bass also :)
Any help is greatly appreciated :)
Top rating for the video, I wish that I could've been there, it looks like everyone had a great time :)
WillieDines1 3 years ago
To be perfectly honest you pretty much have to be born with it. You can usually gain upper notes with proper training, but not usually lower notes.
