Kenny is a real master. I wish he'd played a hipper solo, like he obviously can. This is a little too Maceo Parker for me. Not that there's anything wrong than that, but Kenny could do a lot more.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
actual solo started 4 minutes earlier. Kenny had stopped and walked back. miles has back to kenny and didn't know. kenny hits 5 straight notes at 33 seconds. miles hears mic echo. Kenny uses miles' mic and you see improvs in Jazz. Bongo player is useless. Tract has tutu, new blues, interviews. buy the full tape/dve. a keeper. glad to see miles teaching and finally respecting harmonies. He and coletrane kills jazz for 15 years. came to his senses and dropped the drugs again.
We are blessed to live in an age where we can go to our computers and watch the masters at work, for free. Thank you so much for positing this sheer brilliance.
That man is SICK good. I have "Beyond the Wall" & that is easily one of my favorite albums right now. Coltrane would be proud to see him. Awesome sax player. Simply awesome!
Anybody has an idea why Kenny wants to give a break during the solo? I have been watching this video for I long time and I always wondered why. My best guess is that he didn't like the way he entered the solo, and wanted to make a fresh start.
Another guess is that he felt so uncomfortable, and when Miles came by him Kenny said "I've gotta go pee!!' to his ears.
ROTFLMFAO, First off Kenny being who he is, i doubt he was intimidated with miles, the reason he tok a "break" lol is bcus he was having mic problems, listen carefully at :30-:37 and you can hear the mic clipping, and thats what he was tellin miles when he came by him most likely. thats why when he comes back hes playing into Miles' mic
hmmm that was technical, but probably true bcs kenny, in the very beginning of the solo, was looking at the horn repeatedly, probably to the mic.
And miles handing kenny his mic, I thought it was kind of a courtesy or an encouragement. Anyway I can make up dozens of stories about this performance worthy of the title "Human Nature"...
It just made me cry... to see Miles passing the torch like this, in this simple way... and then he just shows a sign: kenny...
You are in heaven, master... this heaven is called music and you are playing with oscar peterson and billie and louis and django and johann sebastian and atahualpa... the whole lot,...
Me puse a llorar.. ver a Miles pasando la antorcha así, de una forma tan humilde... y luego simplemente levanta un cartel en el que se lee: kenny...
this is just a hell of a video. Magical solo development in the guy's face. miles created, miles had to deal with his creation too. out-standing performance from mr. garrett. what an alto sound & feeling. Thank you!
For all of you that are like "Miles is challenging him"... didn't you see his mic break? Miles is holding up his trumpet to him so he can use his mic. He's not being a dick or anything, their equipment just isn't working right.
He was doing that to all guys in 80's. I had never thinking in that way but this is possible explanation :-) Thanks Man :-) I really love MIles he is really the biggest and most succesful musician of all time... He was selling his music through all periods... HE knew how to find right people and make music :-)
Anyone notice at around 5:10 they keyboard starts doing to bridge to Milestones in an 8 over 12 polyrhythm? It's really prominent around 6 minutes in. Really cool effect. never noticed that before, but it sounded really familiar.
It takes an musician that can tell when someone is being artistic, tasteful, and wholeheartedly speaking through their horn, instead of just doing it for money and so on. I don't mean to say that Gorelick isn't doing it just for the money, but in my opinion, it's way too cliched and not as tasteful as people like Garrett, Cannonball, you know the greats. :-)
Bro... I SWEAR you're right, lol. Maaaan. I played on one of those things at Sam Ash, and when I tried to play Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise, I sounded TERRIBLE, but then I played smooth jazz, and it sounded almost better than Kenny G. His sax... TO DEATH WITH IT. I swear, you're completely right, Up with Garrett, down with Gorlick.
I swear, lately all I can think about is Garrett and his style of iprovisation. Infact in some of the jam sessions I go to, people have asked me if I draw inspiration from Maceo Parker and Kenny Garrett and my answer is always "HELL YEA!!". Besides, I think Gorelick's Saxophones are designed to be optimal when played out of the side our your mouth...Haha.
Didn't say I was as good as either of them. My style is inspired by them, amongst many others. By no means did I imply that I'm as good or better than them.
Lots of long tone, do them in 4ths like G to C, then do it chromatically (G# to C# ect.) also u can do overtones just do that for like 15 min every-time u practice and u'll notice a big improvement in ur sound and will have a lot more control over ur sound
Like the others said, you can sing whilst playing a note however, I believe humming works the best since there is more of a vibration caused in your ombishure therefore making a buzzy sound. However, Kenny doesn't really use this in his solo. Rather, (if you notice)he plays the F# which, when overblown, creates a natural buzz without the need to hum or sing. Its as simple as learning how to properly hit the F#(work on producing a nice non-squeeky tone) and then overblow it.
practice, and the right concept. i learn to hum and blow into the sax at the same time. the way i learned it was you practice whilsting and humming at the same time. it the whistling and humming should sound like a UFO is landing in those space movie. takes a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, its all good. try it out.
yeah hum.......i just started humming......kept it goin....put the horn in ur mouth and blow while humming....u eventually get it....it took a couple weeks for me

also, know your minor, diminished, half diminished, whole tone, pentatonic, blues, and be bop scales. start listening to a lot of jazz. 2 books that helped me get better are patterns for jazz by jerry coker, jimmy castle, gary campell and jerry greene. they all wrote one book. the front has a sax on the front and a drum set. its green white and black. and a book called daliy studies for saxaphone by trent kynaston. they help greatly.
