  • unreal

  • Pura magia nera!

  • Is that a Selmer Paris?

  • It's a Mark 6

  • Fantastic!

  • Kenny is a real master. I wish he'd played a hipper solo, like he obviously can. This is a little too Maceo Parker for me. Not that there's anything wrong than that, but Kenny could do a lot more.

He plays great over the changes at the end.

  • You must be crazy.

  • Yeah! That is what jazz is all about! everyone feeling it and jamin' it up!

  • can say a lot.

  • It's my model!

  • nice, its pretty nice of how miles would let kenny use his mike lol

  • We are blessed to live in an age where we can go to our computers and watch the masters at work, for free. Thank you so much for positing this sheer brilliance.

  • omg I love that kit!

  • soooo fucking GREAT!!!! I love it so!

  • hes is the man he is so crazy at alto amazing

  • 3:56 boah einnfach geil;)

  • holy crap

    the guy is a beast

  • if it asnt then omg cause this is just great work man. This is what im trying to get right here to this level hahahha maybe in my next life :)

  • hes maby just keeping the reeds wet.

  • Kenny is a real master of building dynamic tension.

  • We all know kenny got down, but the bass player, lead and percussions was on the mark baby, good job everybody, especially those percussions.

  • That man is SICK good. I have "Beyond the Wall" & that is easily one of my favorite albums right now. Coltrane would be proud to see him. Awesome sax player. Simply awesome!

  • best sax solo ever heard before Coltrane !

  • epic is the word

  • What an honour to have Miles hold your mic.

    Two greats; iron sharpen iron

  • is there an audio recoarding of this song?

  • Yes on Ares

    Kenny Garrett solo

    or human Nature kenny garrett

  • Anybody has an idea why Kenny wants to give a break during the solo? I have been watching this video for I long time and I always wondered why. My best guess is that he didn't like the way he entered the solo, and wanted to make a fresh start.

Another guess is that he felt so uncomfortable, and when Miles came by him Kenny said "I've gotta go pee!!' to his ears.

  • ROTFLMFAO, First off Kenny being who he is, i doubt he was intimidated with miles, the reason he tok a "break" lol is bcus he was having mic problems, listen carefully at :30-:37 and you can hear the mic clipping, and thats what he was tellin miles when he came by him most likely. thats why when he comes back hes playing into Miles' mic

  • hmmm that was technical, but probably true bcs kenny, in the very beginning of the solo, was looking at the horn repeatedly, probably to the mic.

And miles handing kenny his mic, I thought it was kind of a courtesy or an encouragement. Anyway I can make up dozens of stories about this performance worthy of the title "Human Nature"...

  • lol you must not know too much about kg

  • yes thats true. he doesn't tell much about himself when we meet.

  • I have the DVD of this and it looks like his mic is broken, so he either goes to get it fixed or takes it off back stage.

  • I think he went off to pee. If you notice, he walks off the stage.

  • tremenda presentación

  • Damn, Kenny raised the bar, then broke it., good job Kenny.!!

  • I love those guys. This is one of the most underrated bands of Miles' career along with the one with Pete Cosey and David Liebman.

  • Kenny Garrett is crazy good

  • r.i.p. miles davis and michael jackson

you both had touch all our hearts with your music

  • FANTASTIC!!!

  • I love Miles for giving his cats the freedom to express, and Kenny did just that. Way to PLAY!

  • shivering...too brilliant for this world.

  • Kenny Garrett wins.

  • cool

  • this is human nature

  • simply said DAMN!!!!

  • Yeah...

    Kenny Garret for President!!!

  • thanks....

    no words.....

  • It just made me cry... to see Miles passing the torch like this, in this simple way... and then he just shows a sign: kenny...

You are in heaven, master... this heaven is called music and you are playing with oscar peterson and billie and louis and django and johann sebastian and atahualpa... the whole lot,...

Me puse a llorar.. ver a Miles pasando la antorcha así, de una forma tan humilde... y luego simplemente levanta un cartel en el que se lee: kenny...

    estas en el cielo, maestro..

  • yea its Miles Davis with Marcus Williams in Paris at 1989

  • gape

  • this is just a hell of a video. Magical solo development in the guy's face. miles created, miles had to deal with his creation too. out-standing performance from mr. garrett. what an alto sound & feeling. Thank you!

  • fuck ya, who needs chord changes.

  • Miles is a total pro. How humble to hold the mic for another player! Nice.

  • nice hat kenny

  • He simply killed it.

I had shivvers what happens when there is to much soul in music for a body to handle?

  • really great direction in kenny's solo. he totally built the groove. that's so hard to do.

  • For all of you that are like "Miles is challenging him"... didn't you see his mic break? Miles is holding up his trumpet to him so he can use his mic. He's not being a dick or anything, their equipment just isn't working right.

  • KENNNNNNNNNNNNY!!!

  • This is incredible, fantastic solo and beautiful music. Nicely played, and the dynamics is just terrific :)

  • Miles MADE him break the glass ceiling...

  • i can just imagine the tension in garrett's body specially when building the solo up and damm Miles is holding him in place because of the microphone.

I think Miles was just challenging Garrett.

Garrett passed the challenge with great excellence.

    Anyone else thinks that??

  • i love this solo, i never get tired of it

  • I've transcribed the entier solo, 5.40 min of kenny g solo, if anyone is interested pm me. It's flawless.

  • Could I please have a copy of your transcription, thanks.

  • YES! I'm interested too. Let me have a copy. Thanks.

  • I am also very interested! I would love a copy . I have sent you a mail

  • damn great!

  • Mane this one of the best alto improps of all time!!!!!!!!!

  • muy bueno muy bueno

  • Miles' face at 6:44-6:48 is priceless!

    Dayum!

  • Jajaja yeah i take a photo of that face :P and i use it on messenger :P

    I love that expression

  • Anyone who thinks Miles is taking his mic off at the end of Kenny's solo is just stupid. It's clearly his mute he's' taking out.

  • No doubt of that! its kenny´s mistake, but the Show must continue, so miles as a showman could finish it.

  • wow

  • espectacular :)

  • You really need to post the entire song.

By just posting this part you really don't do justice to Mils or Kenny.

    Thanks

  • 4:28 i can listen to all day

  • Anyone Knows what mouthpiece uses Kenny on this video?

  • Kenny has been playing with a selmer soloist E. I'm sure that's what he's using here. Remember, mouth piece is more important than the horn!

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you :) i´ll buy it

  • He mostly uses a Fred Rast modified long shank soloist style piece which is opened to .96 or a bit bigger than an F.

  • Yeah, but the player is more important than the mouth piece and the horn :)

It sounds great cause it's Kenny...

  • Can you imagine soloing with Miles 2 inches from your face? Jesus...

  • O MY GOD.... I LOVE THIS GUY...!!!

  • la cago !!!!!!!!!

  • la cago de bueno? o llendose al final?

  • de bueno !!!!!!!!!

  • THAT'S THE BEST SAX PLAYING EVER!

  • amazing!!! 5*****

  • Anyone notice at around 5:10 they keyboard starts doing to bridge to Milestones in an 8 over 12 polyrhythm? It's really prominent around 6 minutes in. Really cool effect. never noticed that before, but it sounded really familiar.

  • Cornelious5463 you are right i practice the over tones about 15 mins. everytime i practice every day. Its becoming like second nature now,...grea!!

  • Thats Fonkahh

  • awesome! this guy has some nasty skills

  • feel the groooove...

  • This is the REAL Kenny G. All other Kenny G's are just imitating, or stink.

The "other" Kenny G's got nothing on Garrett! :-)

  • Omg that was the exact same thing that i was thinkin of sayin. (well not EXACTLY, but sumfin lyk dat :D) lol

What uz say is so true man haha Kenny Garrett pwnz Kenny G's ass rofl

  • It takes an musician that can tell when someone is being artistic, tasteful, and wholeheartedly speaking through their horn, instead of just doing it for money and so on. I don't mean to say that Gorelick isn't doing it just for the money, but in my opinion, it's way too cliched and not as tasteful as people like Garrett, Cannonball, you know the greats. :-)

  • Haha...Kenny G. He has his own brand of saxophone now. I think they're designed to play pentatonic scales and out of tune.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

  • Bro... I SWEAR you're right, lol. Maaaan. I played on one of those things at Sam Ash, and when I tried to play Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise, I sounded TERRIBLE, but then I played smooth jazz, and it sounded almost better than Kenny G. His sax... TO DEATH WITH IT. I swear, you're completely right, Up with Garrett, down with Gorlick.

  • I swear, lately all I can think about is Garrett and his style of iprovisation. Infact in some of the jam sessions I go to, people have asked me if I draw inspiration from Maceo Parker and Kenny Garrett and my answer is always "HELL YEA!!". Besides, I think Gorelick's Saxophones are designed to be optimal when played out of the side our your mouth...Haha.

  • Put up some recordings of you. I wanna hear you and see if you're right. You speak almost too highly of yourself... not a good thing to do.

  • Didn't say I was as good as either of them. My style is inspired by them, amongst many others. By no means did I imply that I'm as good or better than them.

  • damn that was good as hell

  • Seems as though there's good advice been given out here!

I would say I've got a decent tone currently, but it's a bit to 'In-your-face' for my liking.

Anyone give advice on how to develope a nice sweet Bird style jazz tone?

    Thanks

  • Lots of long tone, do them in 4ths like G to C, then do it chromatically (G# to C# ect.) also u can do overtones just do that for like 15 min every-time u practice and u'll notice a big improvement in ur sound and will have a lot more control over ur sound

  • Dont forget to practice long tones and overtones either! These are also very important, although it seems a bit boring.

Good luck with the project :)

  • I'm a fairly alright sax player, but I'm struggling on trying to work a little of Kenny's growl technique into my playing...

Any tips on how to emulate that?

  • you have to sing while blowing in the sax..

    did you mean that?

  • Like the others said, you can sing whilst playing a note however, I believe humming works the best since there is more of a vibration caused in your ombishure therefore making a buzzy sound. However, Kenny doesn't really use this in his solo. Rather, (if you notice)he plays the F# which, when overblown, creates a natural buzz without the need to hum or sing. Its as simple as learning how to properly hit the F#(work on producing a nice non-squeeky tone) and then overblow it.

  • practice, and the right concept. i learn to hum and blow into the sax at the same time. the way i learned it was you practice whilsting and humming at the same time. it the whistling and humming should sound like a UFO is landing in those space movie. takes a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, its all good. try it out.

  • yeah hum.......i just started humming......kept it goin....put the horn in ur mouth and blow while humming....u eventually get it....it took a couple weeks for me

  • also, know your minor, diminished, half diminished, whole tone, pentatonic, blues, and be bop scales. start listening to a lot of jazz. 2 books that helped me get better are patterns for jazz by jerry coker, jimmy castle, gary campell and jerry greene. they all wrote one book. the front has a sax on the front and a drum set. its green white and black. and a book called daliy studies for saxaphone by trent kynaston. they help greatly.

  • you gonna play professionaly like him? just letting you know now, KNOW YOUR SCALES!!!THEY HELP LIKE NO OTHER!!! leran all 12 major scales full range of the horn. people think this doesnt help, it has improved me immessly. and my teacher, he's really good, cuz he knows his scales. so learn them! everthing comes easier once you know your scales.

  • Miles was just so freakn cool...

  • Hehe then practice your buttocks off, my man! :)

Don't forget to practice your scales and play transcriptions...

  • I love how Miles takes away the mic at the end of KG's solo, he's just like "okay you're done"

  • He doesn't take the mic away. He just takes out his harmon mute. Kenny moves away from the mic at the end.

  • Oh you're right, Miles actually tries to keep the mic close to the bell of Kenny's sax on that last note. My bad

  • Some of the very great.

  • wow...his growl technique is pretty cool

  • love kenny's hat!

  • from what dvd is this?

  • Miles in Paris

  • thanks a lot

  • does anyone know what the songs called?

  • The songs called human nature

  • Brother is awesome, so when Miles said he had a sax player, he had a sax player - Kenny GARRETT. It's unfortunate we didn't see Prince, Marcus, and Kenny with Miles - Musicianship at it's finest, but of course we would have had to deal with Prince's ego,... PITY. But God's sends the trumpet player and He seems to select the Sax Man!

  • 30 times,...pssst-I've watched this, saved this to watch this, almost daily for the past two years, I'm exagerating but this piece is classic, as in timeless, forever,... tantamount to Miles. Saw Kenny in Chicago and he blows with a passion thats indescribable. He's blowing rythym, melody and harmony and its coming at you so fast that you're in awe -trying to figure your way out the rabbit hole. .

  • Increible, de los mejores sólos de saxo que he escuchado en mi vida.

Kenny y Miles son de verdad unos genios.

  • omg iv watched this at least 30 times now n i still love it. i wish he was appreciated as much as everyon on the shitty TV

  • well observed

  • I wonder what Miles said to Kenny?

  • I bet he was saying something about how his mic wasn't working correctly. It kept crackling when kenny would play in the lower register of his horn. This is also why he probably ran off stage for a second then came back and did his solo using miles' trumpet mic.

  • ^in reply to what willie33043 was talking about.

  • This man is dangerous!

  • Garret Is Amazing

  • Garrett is my hero.

  • Me too.

  • pura música

  • siempre dije ke el kevin garnet este es muy bueno...

  • 5:42 - Miles doesn't look to impressed :D

  • Man... FUCK Kenny Garrett for being this good! hahaha...

  • Hey whats the name of this song or doe anyone know where I can get this on my Ipod

  • It's from Miles Davis "Live Around the World". I think this track is "Human Nature". Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

  • that's right it is human nature

  • Miles was the pilot light that let the furnace burn... anyone who disparages him for going into "fusion" needs to listen to this.

  • If not for Kenny Garrett (specifically the afore mentioned solo on Live around the world) I would have gone on completely dismissing miles' 80's stuff. thanks for this.

  • omg wish i could that on my sax

  • The REAL Kenny G!! This is a great one with Miles. Artistry in motion.

  • just lettin u know its not kenny G as in the smooth jazz player its Kenny Garrett.

  • sorry i miss read ur comment lol.

  • I've watched this video like 20 times... it's amazing.

  • What an amazing solo. I'm trying to learn it from this video I've got some of now.

  • wheres can i find the performance of human nature from the miles live around the world album?

  • I've have one on my other videos. dont know if you mean this recording but check it out, its cool!

  • man human nature is miles davis song kenny just played it on sax ...

  • HELL YES!!!!

  • spoko muzyczka;)
