  • beautiful!

  • I was young when my mum first played this song. Took me a few years to realise the meaning. Cried my eyes out.

  • husbandzoned :'(

  • lol ka pait sa meaning

  • Mga Ungas! simple lang ang meaning ng kanta...Iniwan nung girl yung asawa niya dahil sumama siya sa kaparehas niyang babae!...kaya nga may lyrics na " I will give to her my wife" kuha niyo?

  • i love this song......

  • Unfortunately David Gates Remains unrecognized as one of the greatest songwriters of love ballads. No one writes songs anymore.

  •

It’s a beautiful song, no doubt. I still get in the melancholic mood every time I listen to it.

  • sad to say........this is my valentines day song this year..........sigh

  • OMG such mems... I still say this is the most beautiful love song I've ever heard. the guitar work and vocals are incredible obviously but.. the story just brings tears to my eyes... It wasn't him :(

  • oh this song makes me cry, love it so much! rock on, I'm gonna go toast some bread now, haha!

  • the song is like the irony when you think that the phrases she writes on pages like facebook are dedicated to you and the true is that she dedicates them to another guy... in my case and worst of all, the girl i liked, wrote love quotes to my best friend and another to my brother and I thought the quotes were for me hahahahaha

  • my dad stayed at my house one night i had bread cd playing on auto when he woke up in the morning he just said beautifull :}

  • putang ina nio

  • ayus ah, hehehe

  • @sluboy12 huy masama yan . Ipinapahamak mo lang ang kaluluwa mo . walang magandang maidudulot yaang ginagawa mo pero kahit gayon, sana ay patuloy ka pa ring patnubayan ng panginoong may kapal. - Fr. Caloy ( Director of SASMA Retreat House )

  • Holy Moley! You people still talking about this song? It is one of my favorites but only because it reminds me of my childhood and first loves. It's actually kind of a brutal song, because the boy thinks she's writing about him. He hasn't even kissed a girl yet! He's just starting puberty and the girl may be his teacher for all we know, letting him down easy. ROFL!

  • bread makes u think how rnb and pop music killed the most beautiful songs ever created such as this.. its a shame.. it makes u think how it should have been better this way..

  • gandang trip naman nyan :))

  • This song still wipes me out...would love to hear the vocal/guitar version w/o the key and string frills - does anyone know if there is one?

  • GERINA DOVE has a FAT head~

  • Love David Gates....the first album I ever purchased was by Bread. GREAT SONG!

  • A song that is interesting to think about from the perspective that the girl in the song left the diary underneath a tree on purpose hoping he would read it because she didn't have the heart to tell him she loved somebody else in person, and it also allowed the guy to deal with it on his own terms and feelings about the situation at the same time. My feeling is she never loved him, but knew that he loved her and was trying to find a way to tell him without actually telling him. Unrequited Love.

  • @phillcro71 U got it!! :)

  • this is like my parents love story :)

  • @Mr3ilovemusic i feel bad for your dad then

  • @xlSKYLINE yeah, they broke up years ago.

  • possibly their finest song

  • This reminds of a woman I knew 20+ years ago. We were the best of friends and loved each other. Marriage never happened however. I wonder what would have happened in our lives if would have tied the knot.

  • Beautiful song, one of my favourites by David Gates & Bread, the music I grew up on : )

  • Keep thinking of him, I'm sure he's still with you :-)

  • it does bring back memories..

  • i hear this song and sigh.can my life be like it was before?

  • my father always play this song again and again

  • Although many people will wish their lost love and his/her new love "All the sweet things they can find", few will mean what they've wished.

  • @tripleJ1955 Agree - how David Gates can wish this seemingly cold-hearted woman all the good that life can bring is beyond me - she certainly doesn't deserve it - pretty worthless really

  • @paul72kate It's not cold-hearted to love another, especially if she never loved him in the first place. If he loved her one-sidedly, yet can wish her such happiness with another man, then he is a very worthy man who may someday find a woman better for him and who loves him back with all her heart.

  • you are all homosexuals...try rap or country

  • haven't we all had unrequited Love in our lives...................i live with mine but im so happy for them

  • 84glewis said it all for me.

  • This song + one good night = Nocturnal melancholia for me. It's so refreshing to hear. It amuses my soul.

  • This song brought me to tears me when I was 17, Over 40 years later, it still has the same impact to hear it, and the strange thing is, I'm glad it does. The power of a song is one of life's treasures.

  • papa used to play this ...

  • this would be the saddest song i've ever heard...i'm so related to the song

  • Sorry 12th name I've been there, except I'm a guy keep your head up

  • kinda sounds a lil like he was happy she was happy

  • when I got old enough to understand the story, I cried my heart out....old enough to know how it feels at that time. melancholy tear jerker.

  • My boyfriend loves another girl. It hurts quite a bit.

  • Crushing melancholy wrapped in a bittersweet melody tinged with regret and tempered with undying love for the object of affection. I cry every time.

  • From the land of the Bluenose...a get close and personnal song with that someone special!

  • this song and most Bread songs came out in the 70s..when singer-song writters ruled...and Dave gates was one of them.this song have every chick in school bawling there heads off......great music!!!

  • Beautiful song!

  • There's no songs better than 80's songs now.

  • i just discovered this band..great new sound.

  • Beautiful.

  • Loved this since it came out. Wish someone in my life had found my diary.....

  • "I will give to her my wife" what does he mean?

  • @Enoughyoufool "I will give to her, my wife, all the sweet things I can find." Those commas really make the difference.

  • I gather there is a difference of opinon, re: The interpretation of this song (how it should be understood?).

It's pretty simple, IMO: Through the first part the singer of the song assumes the lady in question is thinking about him...

...but in the last stanza he realizes she's actually thinking about someone else entirely.

Since he still cares for her, he "wishes for her, HIS wife (wife to be)...all the good things they (the two of them) can find.

Not really so hard to understand, IMO.

  • @Mulsanne917flatout

Re, my previous post: "HIS wife" ^^^ means "the other fellow's wife."

As in "HIS wife" and not "my" wife after all....

I've been listening to this song for the past 30+ years, and if there is any other confusion about it, I will try to help clear it up if I can. But it's simple.

"He, the singer" finds her diary...and reads it (and assumes at first she's writing about him), but eventually stumbles on something telling him she's writing about someone else entirely.

  • He takes it much better than I would. . .

  • Loved Bread from the fist time i heard them, white writing for the lyrics on a light background doesnt work though.

  • I love bread songs... since highschool until now... im lucky i still have the cassette tape of the " The best of Bread"

  • I love bread songs... since highschool until now...

  • So beautiful.

  • nice

  • Wouldn't you know it? She shouldn't show it.

  • my father love bread everynight he sing all songs of bread

before i go to sleep i miss my father :-(

  • @Rochenel27 a beautiful thought

  • @Rochenel27 Every night at bedtime my Dad would play either "The Best of Bread" or "Johnny's Greatest Hits" (Johnny Mathis) while we were going to sleep.

  • @Rochenel27 I am probably the same age your father would be today. Believe me that you were loved and that he misses the opportunities to be with you.

  • @hdwhit75 thx i sure he is

  • @Rochenel27 Keep thinking of him. I'm sure he's still with you :-)

  • Comment removed

  • @Rochenel27 the sad thing about this video is it ends (3:09) :-(

  • @Rochenel27 I lost my father too.. I often think about him as well. :(

  • @d062878 ohh sad but i didnt lost my father his just far away

  • God, why isn't music like this around anymore???? I miss it so...... :(

  • the love that ya give lives in others

  • ljubav tova !!!!

  • lots of feelings in their music today that is all gone.....

  • This song transports me to my happy youth.

  • @0926391 thank you for the song :))).

  • so sweet it's reminiscing when i was a kid.

    @Sheldonwh why what happened? :(

  • i think the girl who read the diary was aubrey .... and it say baby i'm a want you.

  • and he's lost without your love.

  • He was not supposed to find it. It was a lovely day and she was relaxing under the tree but then her bowels stirred and she had to high tail it inside to drop a duece. And whlie she was sittin on the shitter he sauntered by and curiosity got the best of him.

  • Sound like Bull but this happened to me

  • Just sang this at Tai karaoke... someone actually cried and said my voice was like an angel... Beautiful song!

  • awwe... sad story

    great song

  • this is my 2nd fave song. i remember my hischool yrs.

  • Love this song so much :')

  • the story of my life.

  • love it

  • i like Bread's music and the orchestration they use on top of the fine folk type music they wrote -- all original. and the great thing is that more than one of them were writers composers. great.

  • this song is very soothing. love to hear the melody with its beautiful lyrics

  • What a great old song! David Gates has a beautiful voice....Many memories of being a teen and laying in my room at night with the radio going and listening to great songs like this one....

  • gaga, puke yak, boring,

  • I always imagined two long time friends now in high school. He's loved her for almost as long as he's known her but never told her. He reads the diary and believes she loves him too. She finds him with her diary and because of their long friendship, it's ok with her for him to keep reading. He imagines a future with her as his wife but as he continues to read, he discovers the truth about who she really loves. Through his tears he resigns to the truth and wishes them well because he loves her

  • @AustinKnightOwner Wow, thats a very concise assessment! Excellent

  • @AustinKnightOwner Austin you hit the nail right on the head. True love means wanting happiness for that person, even if it isn't you.

  • @Acesthreat stop with that bullshit ... just enjoy the song

  • @AustinKnightOwner that's a really sad story... :(

  • Well I think his wife was leaving him for another.

  • This song 'Diary' has been making me cry since I was sixteen. But I listen to it every time thinking it will turn out different :-) Hopeless romantics, here we go again.

  • Anyone else notice the microphone getting bumped around the seven second mark? Was that part of the original recording session? Anyways, awesome song by a very underrated group. They had about half-dozen great songs.

  • this song's my papa's fave..hmm..beautiful

  • Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber. This is what people want now days, I rememeber the days when you actually had to know how to sing. I think the young consumers are like hungry sharks...They will consume anything that is thrown to them...Like tin cans and garbage...They'll consume it all. But, sadly we have much less real talent today, like "Bread"...as the standards have dropped so much. If you can get on stage and sing I want my bitch and my ho and my ho and my bitch....your an instant success.

  • goosebumps through the whole song

  • Guess there are 41 soulless idiots who're "way too cool" to appreciate a really good song.

  • I love this song but I've always wondered what her diary was doing under a tree. Was she writing in her diary there and left it there, hoping he'd see it?

  • @alshouse Yes I think so. She did'nt have the heart to tell him she had found someone new. So she left her diary underneath the tree that they both would sit under hoping he would find it and read who is truly in her heart.

  • This song, being as awesome as it is, became fact to me. A tough time, but a great song! Brilliant!

  • @superman29nj You aren't the only one, my friend.

  • Don't we all sound like our parents... LOL

  • @peterson553 Yes. And GOD! THAT was a LIFETIME ago, too.

  • Long Live Bread :]

  • like all the songs from the 60s gave hope in the world songs we could relate to from

first loves ,to hope for all man kind.

  • I DIDI WHAT IT SAY IN THIS SONG, I WAS SO IN LOVE, NEVER WILL FORGET MY YOUTH, I WISH I CAN STOLE HARRY'S WAND AN TRY TO GET BACK RIGHT THERE...............................

  • Bread was such a great group. As a young girl i always though that their song "If" was the prettiest song ever written. Such a wonderful laid back time the 70's were.

  • One of the most poignant, unrequited love songs ever written. VERY TOUCHING! Most of us have been there at one time or other.

  • this kind of music never dies .

  • I remember when this song came out and the first time it came out

  • bitch

  • aww.. I like this song even if it sounds old. It's all about LOVE.! :) ♥ ♥

  • I love how this song ends in, not a bitter, but a sweet hope.

  • i've been listening to bread since 1st grde. my dad told me, they were the bst band from 1972...d yr i was born....back in MANILA, PHILPNS....

  • Good song!♥♥

  • SUCKS REAL BAD TO FIND OUT YOUR NOT THE ONE! MAN I KNOW THIS ALL TOO WELL!!!

  • @legendhunter47 i have to agree with you , it really does suck :(

  • What a souful song!

    Just great!

  • I love this song sooo much.

  • Hope......that's all I have !! Hope that people come around to a better way of understanding things..but I don't think it possible. The odds are against them !!

  • This song taught me to let go.....im not sure if that was the best thing to do.

  • i miss how it was around here,... people are simple and real with huge dreams, broad mind and deep understanding.. not saying all but todays music--- totally sucks.

  • The vast and deepest secrets of a woman's heart...you should pick up and read! Let the sun shine in >>>>> Nightingale

  • heart breaking everytime

  • deeper than you can imagine.

  • awesome song, but the title to this song should be," aint that a b@#$%!!

  • I remember singing this in music class. We were going through our own love trials. It meant a lot. There do not seem to be many songs anymore that make sense to me. It is like we are afraid to show we have feelings. Why?

  • the lyrics of this song really happen to my life :(

  • Bread <3 Best band EVER!!

  • Pure, beautiful and with meaning.

  • i really love this song.... songs like this enlightens my mood whenever i'm down.

  • she wouldnt show....

  • I love these guys.

They inspired me to leave metal and play acoustic stuff. lol

  • Wonderful!!!

  • This is kind of like the ode to online dating relationships...

  • Why is that the music like this that you can hear the guitar, the vocals and accompaniment? Why is that the crap they play today can't be put it this way? I just answered my own question. Silly me.

  • Hey ohmkid, I can relate to your analogy. Music somehow traps time in our minds. It helps us to realize how lucky we are to have loved even though it was lost.

  • I remember 30 years ago playing this song again and again crying my eyes out because my first girlfriend broke up with me to be with another guy. I hated this song so much because I was going thru the exact same thing, yet I couldn't stop playing it because I knew someone else could relate. It's wierd 30 years later I still tear up!

  • Wow-unlike most songs where the guy winds up jealous at the end or tries to kill her, he still wishes them the best. Wistfully beautiful.

  • never get bored listening to Bread songs

  • are these lyricists out of style now? I hope not.

  • love is always kind and patient never selfish or jelouse:}

  • forgiving, unselfish and humble

  • the 50s-80s used up all the good music ideas and left nothing for today

  • @moodybloos12 Yeah, no one can compose and sing another Vincent or American Pie, just to name a couple by Don McLean, one songwriter/singer.

  • 40 people have no heart

  • David Gates, along with Glenn Campbell, were the hottest session guitarist in Los Angles...Most of the guitar work on a lot of the great Beach Boys songs, along with the Yard Birds, were done by David Gates.....I was acquainted with David's younger brother growing up.....

  • every time i hear this i imagine a slow dance at a prom:D good song:)

  • Great song, I just finished a video for it, check it out - youtube.com/watch?v=uhlYY-CxRAM

  • There is no talent in this new stuff they call music. Musical talent is playing the instruments and singing like they did in the old days. I can holler into a mic and play prerecorded music. But I can't make music like this.

  • Can you imagine the way the lyrics would be written..... I shudder to think of this same sentiment played out in Rap... AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

  • afafasfafsfheajhtaujrtbuy 7y 7y ryr r

  • afafasfaf

  • one of my favorite song. The best song by the Bread.

  • so romantic, so sad and so nice. everhearing....

  • Thank you mfpcburns.

  • Rap and the people of its culture glorifies their gutter life and decadent lifestyle. Music's powerful influence is being used for all things that are bad about people and make it like it is an acceptable way of living.

  • @actiondirector Those people need to hear songs like this!
