For this scene to really hit you, you have to really understand that it's 150 years later, and that there's no chance for David to ever see Sophia, much less be with her, ever again. Against such a hopeless situation, David and Sophia say one last goodbye to each other.
@mattjames2111 I'm pleased I learned so much about your movie tastes by clicking your profile and reading comments you have made. It seems we just have vastly differing opinions in movies of this genre. I stand by my comment, "Vanilla Sky is terrible."
@mattjames2111 The comments you make are telling. For instance, you didn't like Inception, liked Source Code but didn't agree with the ending, and loved one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
Anyway, since you're the first person with a brain to ask me to describe why I think it's terrible, I'll bite: music, Tom Cruise, dialogue, thin plot masquerading as "deep," and lack of concern for David because he's rich and arrogant. No room to describe any further, but those are the main points.
@CampLo I'm an indie and foreign films buff. Me commenting on a few blockbuster films, which aren't even close to my favorite, says nothing about my movie taste.
You didn't really say anything. What exactly is wrong with the music? The ambient sounds from Sigur Ros and Radiohead are perfect the movie. Tom Cruise hate, that's nothing new and I could have guessed that. Thin plot? You'll have to go into more detail. Unlikable characters don't make a bad film, just look at The Social Network
@mattjames2111 No, I couldn't have gone into more detail because YT limits the response. Look, I like those songs, the soundtrack is like what my playlist was back in HS, just not right for a movie
@mattjames2111 the songs were tacky and corny to me. It's not Tom Cruise hate, he's bad in this movie. He mails it in time to time and he did here. The plot/characters I'll need more space to discu
Yea I'd agree Brian Shelby was a true friend. It's a good argument though. I think he just made a mistake after drinking a load of alcohol and probably didn't remember making the comment to cameron diaz. He was crazy about Sophia too, but he stepped aside for his friend, when clearly tom cruise did steal her from him, because she had been brian's date at his party..What a film though, best film ever..
"Your friend Brian Shelby through a three day memorial in your home. He was a true friend." Ummmmm......wasn't the "true friend" the one responsible for his car wreck and subsequent disfigurement? After all his friend was the one who told Cameron Diaz that Tom Cruise said she was a "f*!@ buddy" which caused Cameron to go off the deep end, get him in her car and tried to kill him. Never understood that.
@Thehours1000 Yes, his friend did tell Cameron, but it was Tom Cruise's selfish actions + Cameron's insecure psyche that caused his death. That's why the tech support agent was reminding Tom of consequences. Shelby was a good friend because he was only being truthful about Tom using Cameron, and he still loved his friend despite Tom stealing his Penelope away from him.
TECH SUPPORT!! Well what the hell happened? Open your eyes! Tommy It was she who somehow knew you best. and like you she never forgot that one night when true love seemed possible He was a true friend You were missed david CONSEQUENCES DAVID I want to live a real life, I don't want to dream any longer Let them out there read my mind I'm sorry Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around I'll find you again I'll see you in another life, when we are both cats
@TheMasculinist oh my god!!! i cant thank you enough! ive been trying to figure out what this song was for so long! i swear ive looked at the soundtrack like ten times by now and never figured out what it was called
"This was a kind woman...an individual... more than your equal. You barely knew her in real life, but in your Lucid Dream...she was your savior." Always gets me.
It's as if when we finally accept losing all that we are to be or have been, only then we are alive. To live in the moment and forget the pain. To live in the day and not hide from the night. To live life without regret even though we cannot gain the minutes back. We move on as natural order allows and accept the flow of this creation. To let go is the most difficult challenge of this life. Each day is a new day and your life is moving towards an unknown. Don't hesitate to accept this fate.
to the illiterati who keep asking... 'what's the name of _____ song', take a hint ALL OF THE SONGS FEATURED can be found directly to the right; you lazy fucks!
@trollercoaster17 you are right most of them are now on the right, wasn't always though, related videos are slowly built to the right according to users' selections after watching this clip. and about movies wow this movie never be old i will remmeber it for my whole life because is amzing story talk true and i adore it and it's impact me and :( make me need you my lovlly I LOVE YOU ♥♥♥
life is meant to be lived no matter the pain, trouble, or difficulty. There is no substitute for reality no matter how much money or power you have, if you dont acknowledge it you can never truly live, life is never as sweet without the sour.
10 years later and Vanilla Sky still captures you, it would have been a great TV series on Show Time or HBO. Thanks for uploading the whole ending without any splicing and shitty music..
Pretty much my favourite movie and the perfect ending. Impossible to say how much of an effect this had on me - its all perfect and different bits get me each time I watch but one thing that always stays with me is Penelopes look away from the camera at the wake. Painfully real.
I have to concur with @TrinTrevellion. I showed a shorter clip to a friend of mine earlier. She didn't get the subtext of what I was trying to tell her. This is easily one of my top 3 favorite movies. And the ending makes it so brilliant. I really appreciated having this 15 minute clip because I always lose it when he says "You were missed."
At first I was kinda dissappointed it all was a dream, but then I realised it couldn't end any other way...
Oh, btw, can someone tell me when does the song "Where do I begin?" plays during the movie? I know it's part of the soundtrack, but I just saw the movie and didn't hear it anywhere!
Btw. thank you for uploading the whole ending. Other uploads make it look like, it's just about suicide but there is so much more meaning to it. In fact, it's the opposite.
Struggling with the emotions of this. Just had my "lucid dream" person for two weeks. A few nights of auspicious moments, things we felt and said that we'll never forget. Agony to let them go. I am forever changed now, but I have to live my life and move forward. I don't want to live in a dream forever......
I love this film, i also have a disfigured face and my life is a nightmare, you get treated totally different and lose opportunities to live the life you want i.e. the girl you want, friends, jobs.
@markdoncaster55 I wish you peace brother. I hope love finds you one day soon and your dream begins. I hope that the days forward are more beautiful than what you imagine possible, and I pray your world becomes filled with belief and possibility.
There are only a few films that capture the true nature of life, in all of its intricate splendor. Mark my words, Southland Tales, What Dreams May Come, I'm Not There and Vanilla Sky, will be studied 50 years from now in film classes, because they capture that nature and embody every aspect with immeasurable grace.
@3Hits4Felix Not too sure about Southland Tales, or What Dreams May Come (haven't seen either). This however isn't all that perfect (I blame it for the brainwashing of the great actor Jason Lee) it's the ending however that I'll be talking for years to come. Last time I saw it was when it was first released on DVD and that ending is the biggest part of my memory of this film. So the best thing I can say is that it's truly and utterly incredibly beautiful, but ultimately very sad I even cried.
@xPSYKOxLIBBYx i see what you mean, but if nothing else, I'm Not There is for sure a film that hits you on all levels and remains unflinching against predictability and obviousness.
@PeircedinBlood i think that the real meaning of those words are "what is worth living for you david?" so yeah i think they are saying something like that to david all the time to see what he really thinks about his life and all that sorrounds him :) but again this is just what i think of the meaning behind those beautiful words
I think this movie ending equals the Shawshank Redemption, though obviously, the movies are in different categories.
These are the only two movie endings where i was absolutely transfixed and didn't want it to end. Most movies, i spend the last ten minutes thinking about what i'll do when it finishes
Finally someone uploads more then 2 minutes of the final scene. Very under rated movie. Truly a great film in every sense. This movie makes you think about life and all the things in it.
Kurt Russell delivers the best - and scariest! - line in the movie: "I'm real. I'm...I'm...mortality as home entertainment? This CANNOT be the future! Can it? CAN IT?"
I felt in love with a girl. She was the first I've ever loved and she told me that we could be friends, thats all. Since then (19th December 2009) nothing is like before. I really love her but we stopped talking to each other. I didnt want us to be just friends. Not anymore. I'd really want someone to sell my Lucid Dream. I know it's impossible but this movie really touched me. I am the one who never fully recovered and Ill never forget that night where truly love seemed possible. :<
I find the film to be a metaphor for self exceptance of love / loss, life / pain . It is so easy for us to numb our pain, and so very hard to except reality sometimes. But no amount of holding on to the best parts of our past losses will make us happy. Only when we move forward can we achieve that. Every passing minute, is another chance to turn it all around.
For this scene to really hit you, you have to really understand that it's 150 years later, and that there's no chance for David to ever see Sophia, much less be with her, ever again. Against such a hopeless situation, David and Sophia say one last goodbye to each other.

"consequences david" gives me chills everytime

How come everyone through out the movie kept telling him: "What is happiness to you David?" Is there like a meaning behind this?
PeircedinBlood 5 months ago
@PeircedinBlood i think that the real meaning of those words are "what is worth living for you david?" so yeah i think they are saying something like that to david all the time to see what he really thinks about his life and all that sorrounds him :) but again this is just what i think of the meaning behind those beautiful words

I think this movie ending equals the Shawshank Redemption, though obviously, the movies are in different categories.
These are the only two movie endings where i was absolutely transfixed and didn't want it to end. Most movies, i spend the last ten minutes thinking about what i'll do when it finishes

I want to add also that this is one of the best movie endings I have ever seen. Very touching. Never has a movie moved me as this one.
