I like FABIAN, but sorry, he couldn't sing to save his life. He did better with acting, in fact, he was more impressive as an actor than some of his peers. There were teen idols of the day who also weren't tremendous singers, that's true, but FABIAN really couldn't sing and I really don't mean that unkindly, it's just a fact. He could sort of "get by" with a fast tune, but if it was ballad there would be no way he could get through it.
Definetly not my favorite by Fabian!, but it certainly fits in nicely with anything else your jiving too that hails from the Doowop era. This is definetly not sounding any bit like the original, as I'm all too familiar with that Tiger that hit the top spot on the Fabulous Forty back in 1959. Thx4 postin'
At least unlike today's teen idols, they had producers and arrangers back then that at least knew how to make decent records even with substandard singers...and he wasn't great, admittedly, but Fabian at least gave it his best
The actual story: he was discovered sitting on a stoop in Philadelphia by Bob Marcucci of Chancellor Records, who liked his looks and believed that would elevate him to stardom. He was right. Fabe still tours and entertains; good for him! Apparently, he's a really nice guy from what I hear....
He actually testified before a Congressional hearing about payola that his singing was electronically corrected on his records. That's no crime -- his screaming audiences did not buy tickets primarily to hear him sing. Show biz never really changes. I heard he's a nice normal guy and a great father who wasn't stupid with his money.
I doubt this is "LIVE" more than likely miming From what I remember unless was Hype !! He was seen playing College Football by Some Manager Who Signed him up there & then on his looks !! Took him in studio & had demo singer singing this song through earphones & he kept singing until resonable. Released a a Hit !! Just like that .. On stage no matter nobody could hear him, if singing BUT He is Still "singing" & touring so must have learnt well along the way.. You cannot KNOCK SUCCESS

I know the "original" studio track but when I listen to this version some questions come to my mind: Did he really sang the tune in studio? Who sang it- for him! The vocal parts ar totally different and back in these days there was no possibility to fake a vocal track just like the producers are doing it nowadays. Back then there was no tehnique. So, does anybody know who the real singer was?
In the Beatles' Anthology, Paul McCartney mentioned the group didn't want to play in America without a #1 hit.
He claimed that England had seen too many of its best entertainers go to America and be well down on the bill behind performers live Fabian or Frankie Avalon; performers the Beatles did not respect.
What a riot, those girls screaming. OMG, this is the song I learned to rock & roll too many years ago, lots of good memories! Thanks Mary Ann for teaching me how to dance, haven't stopped since, still go out on Saturday nights, and we are in our 60's! Can't be depressed dancing.
Of course he had no musical talent. This was the days of the "teen idol" phase. Looks counted for everything. It would be great if you had a voice, but that could be faked. Looks couldn't. Check out the stars of 1959-they are all adorable. Not many could actually sing. BTW-he gets paid for entertaining...and he does that!
@betsilouise So nothing much has changed in then? How many so called stars of today are just the same - look good, but no talent, hyped to success by canny management?

Again you are dead wrong. Millions of teenagers who bought their records proved that fact. You can't enjoy that kind of success and not have talent. or a voice. A voice by the way that is still performing to large audiences across the country. Perhaps those seeing his shows today are also naive and don't realize they're paying money to see someone with no talent or a voice. I would suggest you are completely out of touch.
I did a show with Fabian in 1987- he was a great guy, and I had a blast. Chubby Checker and Bobby Rydell appeared with him. In my opinion, he has earned his place on stage, which is more than I can say for half of the 'musical' no-accounts we have to suffer through today.
your just jealous that all the girls loved him gotta give him that. The people wanted that at the time he was just put in that situation..cant blame him for that
You're right. He is what he is. He never presented himself other than being a kiddy girl magnet. Bob Marcucci signed him to a contract soley based on his looks, thinking he looked like a young Elvis and a marketable name.
I agree that Fabian had no problem getting the chicks. But he does not deserve to be paid for "singing". He does not have any musical or acting talent at all.
He sang in the key of D minus. Whatta putz!

@RoustaboutKid i hope you know that his records were doctored to improve his voice. This was apart of the payola scandal

@GreaterhOLYmEMBER
The Payola scandal had to do with artists bribing DJ's to over-play their music. In my research, I found nothing that had to do with "studio magic".

Fabian was one of the true greats of High School Pop.Unlike all of his contemporaries he had no background in music and just went along with it.
The fact that he's a survivor speaks for itself.
As a singer he never pretended to be other than what he was.
Many of the songs he did were written by Elvis writers including a failed black singer Ollie Jones who wrote Tiger.
Rock critics don't like Fabian but I don't like rock critics
