  • This guy is really STUPID and IDIOT!, What are you looking for greatest???

Higher numbers?, Top of the Top?. Go outside and try to hit a ball with a bat or catch a ball. From my perspective you had never play any sport in your miserable life and the only best that you make at perfection is CRITICIZE like a STUPID GIRL!!!

    FAT FAGOTT!!!

  • Can anyone say fat hasbeen who never made it?

  • fuck stat heads

omar is going to the hall

maybe not on the first ballot....but he definitely will be there

  • Your response should have laste one second with a "yes".

There is no discussion to be had.

  • Omar Hall of Famer? Well, if he doesn't get in for his stats ..WHICH HE WILL...he should get in for the great human being that he is. All future Hall of Famers should be that humble.

  • Compare Omar with Lius Aparicio and Ozzie Smith (both are HOF, respecfully). Omar leads them both in almost every offensive category. Shit, Aparicio doesn't have any GG, and Ozzie has two more than Vizquel. But Hopefully Omar can stay healthy enough to get 3000 hits, or maybe get a ring.

  • Aparicio had 9 gold gloves. What you mean?

  • It's the Hall of Fame, not the "Hall of Good Human Nature and Characteristics"

  • "Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, INTEGRITY, SPORTSMANSHIP, CHARACTER, and CONTRIBUTIONS to the team(s) on which the player played." ...that's what it says in the HOF induction rules and that's why Pete Rose is not in the HOF. Omar fits ALL those requirements, especially records (he's broken most of 'em), playing ability (watch the gold glove videos) and integrity (of the most). Nuff said!

  • Of course he's a hall of famer. It's not even in question, first ballot, unanimous vote. Discussion over.

  • yes

  • he was not considered one of the best in baseball like you say even though he was was only because the game had changed and shortstops needed to be middle of the order guys with power for 25+ homers he deserves a HOF nomination

  • Omar will be the last of the old-style short stops to be inducted, where hitting was not so important, but being a WALL between 3rd & 2nd, plus a great human being, was.

  • would have been an allstar had he played in a different era he is the greatest defensive short stop ever he has the highest fielding pct. ever and he had the smoothest hands ever you are stupid to think that he is not top 25 it is a good thing that you don't have a vote for the HOF because clearly you only care about offence also OPS+ is not the most important stat in baseball so stop basing your entire argument on a player on their OPS+

  • you can not compare the all star nominations first of all the position of shortstop changed between the years where ozzie smith and omar vizquel played when ozzie smith played fans didnt vote people with more knowledge of the came chose the best available into account also the position changed when omar played defence took the back seat to shortstops who could hit 25+ homeruns a season such as cal ripken and a-rod omar vizquel

  • He ranks number 1 among SS in fielding percentage and you think he is not one of the best SS!!!!!!!!!! I grew up in Cleveland. Spent High School watching him play. If you had ever seen him play you would not even be discussing this. He is a GOD with a leather hand! Watching him one hand grounders and glove toss to Alomar at 2nd. He is a master of the swinging bunt (legs too old to still use). Omar is everything that is right about baseball that you steroid era lovers will never understand

  • completely agree...

  • Esto en mi pueblo se llama, ENVIDIA!

y hacer un video por esto, con tu cara de mariquito.ja envidioso,Lo siento! Vizquel va pal HOF.

11 time gold glove, all time leader for double plays as SS, Highest career fielding percentage by a SS, Lowest number of errors in a season by a SS, AL record holder for most consecutive games without an error, Second most hits as SS all-time, All-time leader in games played at shortstop, he stole home 3 times!(que yo haya visto)

    Que alegria da verlo Jugar!

  • *Gold gloves are not an accurate way to judge defensive ability. Rafael Palmeiro won a 1B gold glove in 1999 playing 28 games at the position. That alone should discount gold gloves in an argument to a large extent.

*Judging defensive ability on fielding percentage is like judging offensive ability on batting average. There are far better ways to do it now. I could, theoretically, stand in the same spot, field every play that comes to me, and have a 1.000 fielding percentage...

  • *It's disingenuous to say he has the second most hits all time for a shortstop. He may have the second most hits while playing shortstop, but Cal Ripken, Robin Yount, Honus Wagner, Luke Appling and Luis Aparicio, all of whom played more than half their career games at shortstop, had more hits (not to mention were better offensively).

*Larry Bowa played over 2200 games at shortstop. If he had played another 300, would that make him a HOFer? No. You have to play at a certain, not just play.

  • FP of:....Honus Wagner .940, Aparicio .972, Smith .978, Banks .969, luke Appling .948, Travis Jackson .952, Maranville .952, P.W. Reese .962, Ripken .979, Rizzuto .968, Sewell .951, Yount .964...all of them HOFer, .BA of them (combinated = .265) (((VIZQUEL FP=.984, BA=.274)))... Result: 2011 Hall Of Famer

  • The fact that you are using Honus Wagner's fielding percentage as an example shows you have no understanding of baseball history. The league fielding percentage for a shortstop in Wagner's time was .927. The league average during Vizquel's career is .972.

  • OPS + : Wagner: 150 Banks: 122 Yount: 115 Appling: 112 Ripken: 112 Sewell: 109 Jackson: 102 Reese: 99 Smith: 87 Vizquel: 83 Aparicio: 82 Maranville: 82 Really now?
  • And not that it matters, since BA is a completely useless statistic, but those players you mention have a combined BA of .283, not .265. I'm not really sure how you came up with that number, but it seems like you made it up off the top of your head.

Anyways, they had a combined 28979 hits in 102246 at bats. Do the math. Not .265

  • Just for fun, here are their individual averages: Wangner: .327 Sewell: .312 Appling: .310 Jackson: .290 Yount: .285 Ripken: .276 Banks: .274 Vizquel: .273 Reese: .269 Aparicio: .262 Smith: .262 Maranville: .258
  • Iceman, I am a Caracas native, and grew up in Vizquel's neighbourhood as he was starting his professional carreer. That having been said, I was impressed with your video.

I am a Vizquel fan, but the question of whether he should be in the HOF or not extends beyond his statistics. I would definitely use his mediocre hitting against him... but even when looking at his stats; yet even then, it is in the way that he has carried himself throught with the fans and the league that perhaps gets him in.

  • Thank you for the kind words. You make a good point in that the HOF is not PURELY about statistics. Vizquel has, for virtually all of his career, carried himself with dignity and grace. He is one of the "good guys" of baseball. Whether that does make him a HOFer, I don't know. I tend to think no, but it's just my opinion.

Of course, as a Mariners fan, I would be remiss not to mention the "Vizquel-Rhodes earring incident." But in all seriousness, Vizquel really is one of my all-time favorites.

  • Vizquel Rhodes incident? That's a PERFECT example of the national passtime vs the shallow baseball of today. Rhodes' big bling (silly diamond earrings) were right in the sunlight, and their glitter was all over the pitches. Vizquel made notice, umps AGREED (serious guys also) and told Rhodes to remove earring. Well, the spoiled brat BURST. Lou Pinniela could barely hold him. He got ejected RIDICULOUSLY. Now look for silly "bling" or "tats" on Omar. Omar came to play.

  • last time i checked it was called the baseball hall of fame, not the offensive hall of fame. even when omar didnt produce at the plate he made unbelievable defensive plays that saved runs for his pitcher. u say u started watching ball in the early 90's so u only caught the back half of ozzies career and u missed all of aparicio's days. Your knowledge is based on highlight reels. omar is the best defensive player i've ever seen at any position, period. stop crunching numbers and enjoy omar.

  • Vizquel isn't the best shortstop I've seen since I started watching. Not even close. Rey Ordonez was far better. Adam Everett was far better. You say I number crunch, which is fine, but at the very least I am using evidence to back up my thoughts on Vizquel, whereas you have given absolutely no evidence other than "he's the best defensive shortstop I've ever seen."

  • I should have said best *defensive* shortstop. Vizquel is obviously better than Ordonez and Everett overall, no offense to either of them.

I do love Omar, and I won't be angry or offended or anything if he does get into the hall. As I said, if Vizquel were elected, he wouldn't be the worst shortstop in the hall. not by a longshot. I just don't think that is a basis for electing him.

Until Alan Trammell and Dave Concepcion get in the hall, I don't feel that Omar should be considered.

  • this is ridiculous. you found a bunch of bull shit rating systems and manipulated some obscure stats that dont mean anything. OPS+ who gives a damn. he wasnt on as many all star teams because he wasnt juiced with roids like tejada and he doesnt play in a big market like jeter. ozzie didnt have any competition in his days. omar deserves every gold glove he won and then some. his career offensive numbers are skewed bc of his early years but he came around.

  • to call OPS+ an obscure stat is simply not true. it's one of the most well known and often used stats in the Sabermetric community. I'm not arguing he hasn't had a better career than Tejada. I think he has. I also don't think Tejada is a HOFer. To say Ozzie had no competition is just not true either. He played at the same time as Cal Ripken, Alan Trammell, Garry Templeton, Tony Fernandez, Dave Concepion, Barry Larkin, and Bill Russell, amongst other very good shortstops.

  • omar should be in the hall. he is in the top 3 for greatest defensive shortstops of all time. 11 gold gloves? come on man the plays that he makes are incredible. of course smith is superior but that doesnt mean vizquel shouldnt be in the hall.

  • I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I don't see him as a top 3 all-time defensive shortstop. Honus Wagner, Ozzie Smith and Luis Aparicio were all far superior defensively. He's a very good one, for sure, but not good enough to put him into the hall of fame, in my opinion.

  • To his credit, he improved his offense over the years, and wound up contributing offensively to his teams in a few seasons, but as a whole his hall of fame candidacy lies purely on his defense, and i don't think he is clearly one of the greatest defensive shortstops of all-time.
