I find watching European politics a little more pleasing than American politics. Most politicians in America yell "YOU LIE" While here he just states the facts in a clear and consice manner.
That is the case in point. The European Union cannot exist unless it is tyrannical and unstoppable. Why would a devolved, self Governing local community vote to hand their power over to a self serving group of professional politicians who have no clue about their lives and local needs?
Excuse the "yankee" spelling conventions. . . Hannan is such a joy to watch. PM material, no doubt about it. @carolyncriss "PM material, no doubt about it". Perhaps you could explain to us what exactly constitutes "PM material". Is this something that Hannan shares with both Gordon Brown and Tony Blair. Or is your phrase "PM material" limited to Hannan, Margaret Thatcher and John Major? Interested to hear the answer. Because I think you're just bullsh*ting and probably know very little about British politics.
WE have our own dream and our own task, WE are with Europe but not of it, WE are linked but not combined, WE are interested but not absorbed and should european states man address us with the words that we used of old should i speak for thee to the king or the captain of the host we should reply "NAY SIR FOR WE DWELL AMOUGNST OUR OWN PEOPLE"
So are the members of one of Britain's leading economic think-tanks The National Institute for Economic and Social Research.
"I have a feeling you're not really educated in the basics of economics."
But the economists in National Institute for Economic and Social Research will be and THEY say that the recession is coming to an end. And when it DOES end, those hundreds of new schools and hospitals will still exist . Thank you, Labour.
"You cannot spend your way out of recession." - Hannon
"NIESR said that output had risen in both April and May after a tough first three months of the year that saw the economy contract by 1.9%. If sustained in June, the second quarter of 2009 would show the first increase in gross domestic product since the first three months of 2008." - The Guardian.
So? The fact the Government made the recession longer by pumping huge amounts of tax payers money int ofailing companies doesn't mean they helped us out of the recession. The recession ended because people need to buy things, the government imply made it harder by taxing more instead of less which would have saved us far faster.
"The fact the Government made the recession longer.."
Britain went into recession LATER than most other countries and we're coming out of it SOONER than most other countries. Hannon was wrong, but he's just one of those politicians who could recite the phone book with confidence.
You still haven't shown me any evidence or corrolation. I'm no sociologist (I'm an economist) but I have a feeling you're not really educated in the basics of economcis and are just connecting rhetoric in your mind. The fact is, you can't spend your way out of a recession, that's a defintion... it doesn't mean that government spending prevents it ever happening.
Hannon. You confidently declared to Gordon Brown that "you cannot spend your way out of recession." But Britain IS now coming out of recession because our economy is growing again. Were you wrong? Could Gordon Brown have CUT Britain out of recession and into growth?
Yes, there are not many good rhetoricians these days. Good rhetorics thrive on guts and balls and in times when politics is totally hijacked by bueaurocrats guts and balls are extremely rare.
Thanks to the internet the heroes are coming back. It is always amazing to listen to Hannan or Ron Paul even if I dont always agree with them.
Another good rhetorician but no politician is Pat Condell.
I've been wondering about that, too. The place is empty in most of these videos. Do they only allow him to speak when most of the MEPs are gone, to reduce the chance of his converting anyone?
gee his description sounds a lot like the US. I am so envious that you have such an astute politician that doesn't need teleprompters. The politicians we have here blow it out their ears for hours and say little or nothing. I would take this man any day over Barry the cosmopolitian jockey. I am embarrassed by him.
Ron Paul is right on many things, but there are a few things I can never get behind him on, I'd be happy to trade pelosi and dingy Harry for one good Daniel Hannan
I am not a Ron Paul supporter, I agree with his view on our constitution, his defense of the US, no and that's why I can't get behind him.
I'd take Ron Paul if he was the only choice over Obama anyday, even my cat would make a better president, I like Daniel Hannan and his moxie to say whats on his mind
Perhaps you should re-read Washington's farewell address, considering he presided over the Constitutional convention and was also the first president of the United States under the Constitution that came out of that convention.
@yakyakyak69 No, I do not believe that *most* Americans don't know what it is. For example, my American family and our neighbours have played cricket and croquet since I can remember. :)
@yakyakyak69 No, I do not believe that *most* Americans don't know what it is. For example, my American family and our neighbours have played cricket and croquet since I can remember. :)
Moral and Cultural relavatism are two heads of the same beast; and we wonder why the west isn't taken seriously when it comes to addressing the Muslim world - would you take a civilisation seriously when they've lost the ability to define themselves and uphold values, principles and morals? where pathetic self apologetics is the game of the day rather than steadfast in standing up for something.
What is needed is to tell the miserlums to shape up or ship out. They will bring Armegeddon upon us all, thru their insane religion. I have no sympathy whatsoever for them. In America, we have the Apologist-in chief. He is a miserlum, and a communazi to boot. He is doing everything he can to destroy America, DELIBERATELY, in order to install his sharia and communism. The devil is in charge of the world. I am not religious BTW. I just see evil where it shows itself. None dare call it "TREASON."
GWB, Obama, and every other president before them have been apologists; crawling to Saudi Arabia with their tail between their legs to kiss the ass of one of the worst human rights violators on the planet. Everytime I see the US president begging at the alter of Saudi Arabia along with other oil rich countries - I can't help but shudder and the thought of how America has already been invaded by proxy by the Muslim world through America's unwillingness to put principle before cheap oil.
It's not so much cheap oil as oil being sold for dollars only, the petrodollar. It's the only reason the dollar has continued to be the world's reserve currency for so long. When that goes, so does the US economy. By the way, I have some bad news...
Jeez, we didn't get any ass-kissing from Bush or Obama in Canada, and we are by far your largest source of oil. Saudi Arabia is way down in fourth spot. I am totally miffed about not getting my ass kissed. I don't think it's Saudi Oil that is pulling the US around be the nose, it is Saudi money. The country needs oil, the pols want money - money to win another election, and they'll sell anything to get it.
Obama has committed Treason just by refusing to prosecute Bush. He most likely did that so that his policies don't put him in jail either. O is just continuing the same Bush policies, but with different names. I love how Hannan has pointed out the the EU has set itself up as a Shadow Government not beholden to anyone. The EU will be dismantled soon, the world will become more multi-polar as people realize they would be better off with governments that listen to them.
"This is this wonderful, peaceful human-rights EU that spreads its values not through daisy-cutter bombs, but rather through trade accords or partnership agreements."
Daniel's right that they shouldn't use bombs to spread their values around the world, but I don't like the sound of "partnership agreement."
Maybe someone could explain what that is, because it sounds like NAFTA, or managed trade.
It is truly a rare find in these times to hear a man (who holds an elected office) speak of "moral authority."
In this modern age of "relativitiy" and no "moral absolutes." It is quite refreshing to hear someone in this position speaking with integrity, and from the heart.
Well Mr. Hannan I believe you'll be getting more Conservative collegues up there with you at least from the UK with Labour tanking, then maybe you can get some of your ideas into play! I look forward to hearing about you more often.
This guy is courageous, God bless him, one of the only ones we have here in the States to stand up to the politicos is Ron Paul, we need more people like these guys to stand up for what's right. The hypocrisy of supporting human rights while putting a political muzzle on your own people is something that has perplexed me for a long time, that and how can we enforce 'human' rights except through the barrel of a gun? The disconnect is glaring.
The difference between Conservatives and those on the far left is that Conservatives believe that the people are competent and deserve a say in running their government... And it is the people's government, isn't it?
That's just a straight up lie. It's not about confidence at all. It's about the difference between the immorality of compulsory government and making it representative. Of course, people usually are more competent than governments as history shows, but it's not about efficiency, competence or international standing, it's about people no being slaves to a government. Also, that's no conservatism, conservatism could have been socialist, it just happens conservatives are conservative about liberty.
Confidence? Efficiency? International Standing? I am not sure what these have to do with my comment. I confess that, in order to be provocative, my comments were painted with a broad brush yet were not targeted toward any specific individuals. Big Government and non-representative governments, in my opinion, are against all mainstream conservative philosophies. Most conservatives are against these types of government and prefer government to be responsive and local whenever possible.
The word confidence was meant to say competence. I was thinking far faster than I type, apologies. The other two are common assertions as to the wanted outcomes, which I never attribute to you but which expand the discussion. I agree with this comment entirely, just know that it has nothing to do with the better, or more "competent" choice, it's purely about the fact that one's work, one's money and one's decisions are not the governments, and the more the take, the less representative they are.
Out of complete curiosity, where is everyone else? I'm a bit confused, and don't mean this question to be taken in a bad way or anything, just thought it looked weird.
I think it'll be similar to the British House of Commons - it's only busy when it's likely a large audience will be watching them.
Although I am still a little surprised - it was only a week ago that Mr Hannan informed us that MEP's are paid a small fortune every single day they attend parliament.
Or, the place is full except for the seats around Hannan - I can't see many politicians wanting to be associated with his commen sense views!
No, you can get that money without turning up to Parliament! You just have to sign in. It's also available for non-Parliamentary duties, like the EU's equivelant of Select Commitees and other layers of bureaucracy. However, there is no requirement to take your seat to retrieve travel and food allowances. Also note, the core of the bureaucracy takes place in strassburg, so the useless parliament in brussels is ignored in all that.
It's a shame Hannan is largely ignored in Europe he's a freaking rockstar in America we want more politicians like him!
