Okay, I am going to BLOW your mind away. Ready? The Universe expands because of . . . GRAVITY!! Assume an infinite Universe. Take any sphere of volume (4/3) pi r^3. Now take a larger sphere of V = (4/3) pi (2r)^3, so it's twice the diameter. Volume of Outer Shell = (4/3) pi (2r)^3 - (4/3) pi r^3 = 7(4/3) pi r^3. Outer shell therefore outgravitates inner sphere by 7 times. So Universe is pulled outwards by each bigger shell. And it accelerates! F = ma. May the Force be with you.
more universe? lol, well, really im only a kid, and by y understanding, it never ends, theres billions of galaxy's so im assuming that if u kept traveling u would keep running into different solar systems and galaxys
If you take the correct values for Universe size and age and find the rate of expansion and then draw a curve in X-Y axis iI think it will represent the curve you'll get from the Newtons formula for the gravitational field.. I guess! But i want someone with knowledge to be my censor ]:)
Now.. Even on the Earth surface high structures standing up like towers or even our body are stretched by the earths gravity cuz it attracts our feet stronger than it attracts our heads. So.. Gravity is the weakest force but it have the strangest properties and it acts through incredible long distances. So the combined gravity of the Universe produces "pulling force" that stretches it to out.. That is illustrated with the slower accel. of the closest gals. Well... What you guys think?
Actually, matter is crushed rather than stretched by gravity. This can easily be demonstrated by imagining a world with 100g, a hundred times our gravity. We could not exist, trees would fall, increasing it even further would cause mountains to level. So the more gravity there is, the flatter is the surface of the source. Thats why small planets have, in general, higher mountains than big ones.
So gravity does indeed provide a pulling force in the universe, but that is exactly what it does: pull. All galaxies are pulled toward each other and the initial speed provided by the big bang would slowly but surely deplete and all matter would accelerate toward other matter eventually recombining all matter in the universe in a singularity which might then again blow up in a "big bang" and create a new universe. This is called an oscillating universe.
However, as far as i know scientists think that something called "vacuum energy" exists which provides force to accelerate the galaxies, rather than have them pulled back by gravity. As the space-time continuum expands, more and more space is created and the vacuum energy gets bigger and bigger, so the acceleration rate increases, too. That's why the outer galaxies are moving away faster than those close by.
ah. And few questions i have.. Have you ever heard about something called err.. "The main path" will be close enough in translation..? It is description of how the stars live and die and It appears to depend on their mass. Can you develop for us from here a hypothesis i have about the expansion of the Universe?.. Well.. in the "main path" that stars follow is an exception called Black holes.
I still don't get it. If the universe is 14 billion years old, how could it possibly be 47 billion lightyears across? Had the big bang blown out matter into space at the speed of light (which was obviously not the case) it would have gone 14 billion light years in the 14 billion years that our universe is old creating a diameter of 28 billion lightyears. I conclude the universe would likely be smaller and by no means bigger.
I'm aware of that. However, we measure the size of the universe by looking at matter on either side and check out the distance between the most distant points. The expansion of space itself should be undetectable for us, shouldn't it?
So afterall, the matter would still recede from its startingpoint faster than the speed of light.
Or does the matter somehow 'float' 'with' the space and move away further without actually moving 'in' space?
and if a creature, (not saying human because there MAY BE more unique life in the universe)
If a creature travels to the end of the universe what will be at the end of it?

I've got a stupid question: How does the Hubble stare at one spot when it is moving at 17,000 mph around the earth? It seems it would need to be adjusted at all times, doesn't it?
it takes a calculated shot every rotation around the earth. it is actually many images of the same spot taken many times to increase the resolution to an insane amount.

hey , when you were talking about the black dots on a ballon or white dots on a piece of rubber ,made me think , you said that if you were to stand on one of the dots you would see all the other dots move aways from you, but that just it no curve just the increase of space between galaxies, but i was also thinking that it would be impossible to witness the direction of the expansion because of the mere size , curve of sight betrays us.
iffin' the universe is expanding, it must be exponentially expanding, which would give us about 4 more years, coinciding with the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012. As you well know, the bottle with 1 bacterium at 11 o'clock which is full at 12 is half full at 11:59.
See, what blows my mind is where is the universe located and what surrounds it. The matter that surrounds the universe must me made out of something... called dark matter, from what I've read. What is dark matter?
If you use Newton's laws most galaxies should fall apart, since they don't, there must be more gravity than we see meaning more matter than we see. Dark matter is this matter although there's no guarantee it exists. I hope that explains it and also that's only my understanding of it. :)
dark matter is the abscence of matter, therefore there is nothing to reflect light..it is really nothing at all, but somehow, it seems to have mass and weight.
Heres my problem. If the universe is expanding what is it expandig into? Also if you have time do you believe in this planet nibiru theory. P.S loose the partridges music lol.
First off, love your videos. Keep up the good work! However, I'm confused as to the size of the universe and the way you discribed it. In your "rubber sheet" analogy there should be a center, wich I put as the origion of the Big Bang and if nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. that would put the radius at 13.4 Billion light years making the total diameter roughly 27 Billion light years across, NO?
Think of it this way, trying to find the "center" of the universe is like trying to find the center of the surface of the earth. There is no center, no singularity, the universe's big bang did not start from one single point.
It is my understanding that the whole theory of the 'inflationary model' is built upon the premise that relativity only limits the speed of light within space-time. Since the expansion of the Universe itself is a measure of space-time itself, the rate of this expansion is not limited by the speed of light. 3x10^8 m/s is the speed limit within this Universe. It says nothing about how fast this Universe may expand. But don't get me wrong.. I am as confused as anyone else regarding this stuff.
Sorry man you have just proven yourself wrong about the size of the universe and the big bang theory.
My first point is that the hubble 10 day picture proves that the universe is way bigger than any telescope known to man. Let's say we had a bigger hubble then we would see thousands of more galaxies at each point in space.
There are big bangs happening continously...we just don't see or hear them...how about the tree in the forest falling, does it make a sound...of course. We are nothing but a vapor...here for a minute time and gone...Infinity continues on.
No such thing as a Universe.........Infinity of space...Neverending...with life as we know it and as we don't know....We as tiny humans are really STUPID in the grand spector... we are IGNORANT......We know nothing and will not live long enough to measure anything.....How can anyone claim the statements are truth? Pure speculation and pityful excuses of our own indulging intellect....get real.
its expanding that means it ends somewhere that means its not infinite also if the big bang theory is correct that would also prove the universe to be finite correct me if i'm wrong
Just think about it...if there is a fence at the edge of the so called , "Universe"...something must be on the other side...there can be nooooooo end...just my thoughts and deduction....
a reasonable deductio of course but you dont take much in to acount at all we are four dimensional creatures everything we see is four dimensional (the fourth dimension being time) just because theres no matter doesnt mean nothing is there it also doesnt mean there was nothing before the big bang
pardon me, but I didn't understand how the size of the universe could be more then 13 billion light years. The problem is as follows:
since the big bang happened at one single point, and so everything started to expand from that single point. Now everything expanded in all directions, it should be 13+13 billion light years accross. That is if we assume that it has been expanding at the speed of light since then. So could please shed some light on that, i'd be much obliged. Reguards :)
LOL NAKED SINGULARITY, it has to do something with black holes right? but what does it really is, if u could explain in easy words for me please what does naked singularity means ? :)
Well Kage848, I may be wrong because hey im only in the 9th grade but what i seem to understand from school/research a black hole isnt really a hole... Its basicly a star that supernova'd and turned into something so dense that it attracts everything to it just..part i havnt really figured out yet, i think maby sticks to it???
Ya know in a strange way i thought it always made sense that the universe was curved in on itself to me. I am surprised that they are finding out that may not be the case. It cant go on forever. So whats at the edges? And if its not curved in on itself then that makes the idea of wormholes less likely too huh?
Tell me you're using those teaching talents in an established place of learning! I have an astronomy newbie question though. What proof of the Big Bang is there? (I know I'm totally asking for all you astronomy buffs to round up on me, but take pity on an unenlightened and curious one!)
The Galaxies around use are moving away from us in all directions. We know this because they are red shifted. That mean the light waves are being stretched out, because there moving away at fantastic speeds, causing them to shift to the red end of the spectrum. Thats the best way i can explain it...Do what I did, Buy the Cosmos DVD set. You will thank me.
So at what rate is the universe expanding? It must be slower than the speed of light if its accelerating. Man you make some great vids,my heads in pieces trying to comprehend all this stuff.Fantastic.
good questions i would like to know those too assail, im guessin it would just be like white? mabee heaven? idk I also want to know what was before the universe, like what was here before the universe started or did has it always been here since the dawn of anything
(Just my opinion) I think it'd kill you. Human minds aren't good enough for a lot of things, and, just like a colourless object, it'd be impossible to even imagine what it'd look like.
the universe is actually expanding at an acceleratiing rate, after the big bang the gravity of everything in the universe almost, almost pulled eeverything back together but it came up short on power in comparison, so the left-over energy from the big bang pushed everything away from eachother, and that's where we are now.
3rd question: Suppose there's a theoretical catasclimic event like a super-hyper nova that would wipe out a whole local group, and there is one going on right now, and the earth is in its path and it is 5 billions ly away, will we meet our fate 5 b ly later? or an event like this would not behave like light would behave and travel?
My second question: Can we really detect that the Universe is expanding? Can we see all the stars moving away from us? Shouldn't all the galaxies be moving away from each other instead, and the stars moving away from each other would be so miniscure in comparison to the galaxies?
If the universe is 13.5 Billion LYs old, how do we know what the actual size is today? Unless we know the expansion rate of the Universe and assuming this rate is constant, then we can extrapolate the present true size. Can someone pls explain? Thx.
Question people. I was just wondering how the light from a galaxy 78 or 47 billion light-years away can reach us in a universe that is reputedly 13 billion years old?
If the universe is 13 bil years old, and it's like 40 across...
if we were at one side, and our matter/planet was travelling for like 13 bil years, and then something on the direct opposite side should only be 26 billion light years?
so if everything is travelling at the speed of light, and has been for 13 billion years... the diameter should be 26 billion light years =o can you please explain definitivley in some future vid?
That's the question he was trying to answer in this vlog. The distance between objects in space has contributions both by the motions of the bodies in space, and the expansion of space itself. Example: Our planet and all the matter around it travels 13.5 billion ly one way, while a planet at the other "side" has gone 13.5 Bly the other way, and all the while the space directly between them has expanded by another, say, 20+ Bly.
The total distance between them is then 13.5 + 13.5 + 20+ = 47+ Billion ly. Think of the stretching of the rubber sheet, as Tony said: the dots on the sheet end up farther apart without moving at all against the background of the sheet itself. This component of the distance between them has nothing to do with the speeds of pieces of matter, but simply the expansion, or stretching, of the fabric of space itself.
ok and if you're a creature on one of those far away galaxies, and you looking the opposite direction from earth, i'll bet you'll see deep space and more far away galaxies! the universe is flat and so is the earth, may just be statements that belong in the same category!
If your makeing a series of videos, here is a good advice. Make the videos as a responed to the video before that. That will help the view count and you will reace more people. (sry for my english)
The Universe and me. I have always been intrigued by my brother the Universe. I see parts of it in the evening sky for as far back as I can remember. I see mostly our own Galaxy (Milky Way) in the Universe. I am humbled that I am here with my brother the Universe.
OK, Professor, I only just now took the time to watch this.
Oh, boy, where to begin?
Let me start, if I may, with a question: COBE and WMAP mapped the CMB fluctuations from the last scattering surface; how far away are you saying that surface lies, distance-wise from us?
Actually, you asked about the last scattering surface, as of RIGHT NOW (an important distinction when discussing these things), that's 10^29cm or 10^11 light years.
Please stop calling me professor. I'm just a guy interested in this stuff, try not to be disingenuous.
I would start by urging you to go to my blog, astronomybuff dot com because all this week I have been posting about this EXACT issue. You would be most interested in the post titled: "How Can we See Galaxies 47 billion light years away when the universe is only 14 billion years old?"
I've tried to be clear and the math is simple. Please let me know if that sheds any light on this.
Thanks Tony, I'll look at your website. I also saw that paper. If I understand correctly, the lower limit on the cosmic radius is a result of the premise that they should be able to detect repeating patterns in the CMB if it were any smaller, is that correct?
I'm sorry, but you have sounded kinda ingenuous to me too. Is it really necessary to ask questions in such an arrogant way? We ain't playing chess here, bobby fischer. this ain't no IQ pissing contest, fo' sure. I enjoy your exchange (you obviously know a lot), but some of your past posts made me think that you must be a royal pain. I could be wrong....but that is the impression I got. Sorry. Hadouken! Peace. Salute, Julie
Thanks for the polite way of telling me you think I'm a jerk. But can you give me an example of how I asked a question in an arrogant way? Perhaps I can't see how I come across due to a lack of objectivity? Thanks!
I think the expansion of the Universe has to do with Dark Energy, rather than Dark Matter? I believe to have read this somewhere. Dark Matter is what keeps solar systems and galaxy's together, Dark Energy does the exact opposite only, you can't observe either of the two.
I've read quite a few things about the nature of the universe and while I've heard a lot about the fact that its expanding I think this is the first time I've heard that it's expansion is accelerating...can you explain how or why this is?
P.S. Of course her seat would be less comfortable, or else she would fall asleep while reading.
I have heard about the acceleration of the expansion more than once. It's something that baffled the scientists for years. I think it's been said that the acceleration is due to dark matter. Don't ask me what that is..
yeah, actually, and really coincidently , I was just reading the new issue of "Scientific America" and it was all about dark matter. It's a good issue, you. should check it out. Thanks for the reply though.
Excellent stuff. Would love to know more theoretical astronomy too about the origins of space, esp. things to do with theories on infinate density, black holes and dark matter. Deep stuff and mind blowing. Will keep watching. :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Another awesome video. A little advice on the music, to stop any more people from asking (a lot of people probably won't see your next vblog) is to add the name of the music to the summary of the Hubble Vidoe, or to say go watch vblog 4 in the summary.
ROFL, can't wait till the next vlog ;P Science can be so much fun. BTW, I expected you would start about redshift mechanism, maybe something for later?
Can you please explain to me what the outer edge of the universe expanding would look like? Are new stars just popping out of nowhere still as the universe is expanding? And also what would be on the other side of the expanding universe? Would it just be empty space?
I love your sense of humor, Tony! You really know how to grab your viewers and put them in the room with you and make everyone feel like they're your personal friend. :-)
and will you be covering string theory, dark matter?
Something interesting I saw on the discovery channel was saying something like if a big enough meteor hit earth it would wipe us out, then we would have another 65 million years for some species to arise again, then another meteor, then another species to rise after that. About 3-4 times before either the iniverse collided or the sun burnt out.
Man, you're awesome! BTW I have a question: doesn't universe just appear to be flat because of inflation? The universe can be curved but because of inflation this curvature is very hard to observe. I'm sorry for possible mistakes, my english is not perfect :)
How do astronomers determine the shape of the universe? About that last comment ... A little girl once said "eeeew!" when I said NAKED EYE during one of my planetarium shows.
SO WHO IS THE ROCKETBOOM LADY?
tronulu 1 year ago 2

The speed of light only applies to matter and energy. Space itself can expand or contract at whatever speed it wants.

Shortly after the big bang matter accelerated faster than the speed or light, which is why it is farther out than it should seem to be.

In your "rubber sheet" analogy there should be a center, wich I put as the origion of the Big Bang and if nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. that would put the radius at 13.4 Billion light years making the total diameter roughly 27 Billion light years across, NO?
JoeSoxer 3 years ago
Think of it this way, trying to find the "center" of the universe is like trying to find the center of the surface of the earth. There is no center, no singularity, the universe's big bang did not start from one single point.
DougieBarclay 3 years ago

Youre IGNORANT. Who are you to make such judgements

its expanding that means it ends somewhere that means its not infinite also if the big bang theory is correct that would also prove the universe to be finite correct me if i'm wrong

Just think about it...if there is a fence at the edge of the so called , "Universe"...something must be on the other side...there can be nooooooo end...just my thoughts and deduction....
txndi 3 years ago
a reasonable deductio of course but you dont take much in to acount at all we are four dimensional creatures everything we see is four dimensional (the fourth dimension being time) just because theres no matter doesnt mean nothing is there it also doesnt mean there was nothing before the big bang

pardon me, but I didn't understand how the size of the universe could be more then 13 billion light years.
Reguards :)
noxiouspython 4 years ago
My understanding is that the speed of light changes.

LOL NAKED SINGULARITY, it has to do something with black holes right? but what does it really is, if u could explain in easy words for me please what does naked singularity means ? :)
ZsSuperCumulo 4 years ago
Well Kage848, I may be wrong because hey im only in the 9th grade but what i seem to understand from school/research a black hole isnt really a hole... Its basicly a star that supernova'd and turned into something so dense that it attracts everything to it just..part i havnt really figured out yet, i think maby sticks to it???

Ya know in a strange way i thought it always made sense that the universe was curved in on itself to me. I am surprised that they are finding out that may not be the case. It cant go on forever. So whats at the edges? And if its not curved in on itself then that makes the idea of wormholes less likely too huh?
Not to mention whats going on in blackholes.
This makes my head hurt...=0)

Tell me you're using those teaching talents in an established place of learning! I have an astronomy newbie question though. What proof of the Big Bang is there? (I know I'm totally asking for all you astronomy buffs to round up on me, but take pity on an unenlightened and curious one!)

Your best bet is to read the wikipedia entry on the big bang, it is very informative.

Man you make some great vids,my heads in pieces trying to comprehend all this stuff.Fantastic.

good questions i would like to know those too assail, im guessin it would just be like white? mabee heaven? idk I also want to know what was before the universe, like what was here before the universe started or did has it always been here since the dawn of anything
icowi 4 years ago
what do you think the edge of the universe would look like? and what is the universe expanding into?
assail 4 years ago
(Just my opinion) I think it'd kill you. Human minds aren't good enough for a lot of things, and, just like a colourless object, it'd be impossible to even imagine what it'd look like.
Paramud 4 years ago
the universe is actually expanding at an acceleratiing rate, after the big bang the gravity of everything in the universe almost, almost pulled eeverything back together but it came up short on power in comparison, so the left-over energy from the big bang pushed everything away from eachother, and that's where we are now.
stratwarrior 4 years ago
3rd question: Suppose there's a theoretical catasclimic event like a super-hyper nova that would wipe out a whole local group, and there is one going on right now, and the earth is in its path and it is 5 billions ly away, will we meet our fate 5 b ly later? or an event like this would not behave like light would behave and travel?
makethebestoutoflife 5 years ago
My second question: Can we really detect that the Universe is expanding? Can we see all the stars moving away from us? Shouldn't all the galaxies be moving away from each other instead, and the stars moving away from each other would be so miniscure in comparison to the galaxies?
makethebestoutoflife 5 years ago
yea we have devices that show they move away
carrierform 4 years ago
If the universe is 13.5 Billion LYs old, how do we know what the actual size is today? Unless we know the expansion rate of the Universe and assuming this rate is constant, then we can extrapolate the present true size. Can someone pls explain? Thx.

Question people. I was just wondering how the light from a galaxy 78 or 47 billion light-years away can reach us in a universe that is reputedly 13 billion years old?
outoforbit777 5 years ago
tony your nuts , however interesting ,and fuuny
JBianchi52 5 years ago
and now my question, about this vid.
so
If the universe is 13 bil years old, and it's like 40 across...
if we were at one side, and our matter/planet was travelling for like 13 bil years, and then something on the direct opposite side should only be 26 billion light years?
so if everything is travelling at the speed of light, and has been for 13 billion years... the diameter should be 26 billion light years =o can you please explain definitivley in some future vid?
Lipschitz666 5 years ago
That's the question he was trying to answer in this vlog. The distance between objects in space has contributions both by the motions of the bodies in space, and the expansion of space itself. Example: Our planet and all the matter around it travels 13.5 billion ly one way, while a planet at the other "side" has gone 13.5 Bly the other way, and all the while the space directly between them has expanded by another, say, 20+ Bly.
7JConnor7 5 years ago

I just dont get what the universe is expanding into? know what i mean?
Iwinallfights 5 years ago
OK, Professor, I only just now took the time to watch this.
Oh, boy, where to begin?
Let me start, if I may, with a question: COBE and WMAP mapped the CMB fluctuations from the last scattering surface; how far away are you saying that surface lies, distance-wise from us?
Let's just start with that for now.
r06u3AP 5 years ago
46.5 billion light years.
tdarnell 5 years ago
Actually, you asked about the last scattering surface, as of RIGHT NOW (an important distinction when discussing these things), that's 10^29cm or 10^11 light years.
Please stop calling me professor. I'm just a guy interested in this stuff, try not to be disingenuous.
tdarnell 5 years ago
No disengenuity intended; I was under the impression you had a doctorate and taught your subject, try not to be so touchy.
OK, so you are stating that the CMB image is 46.5 Glyr and the scattering surface is 100 Glyr out due to expansion of spacetime, is that correct?
If so, I am having a terrible time understanding how an image travels for 46.5 Gyr when the age of the universe is only 13.7 Gyr. It does not compute.
r06u3AP 5 years ago
Fair enough. No more touchy.
Please let me know if that sheds any light on this.
tdarnell 5 years ago
I have also reference a paper from 2003 which puts a lower limit on the universe to be 46.7 billion light years.
It reaches the conclusion that a flat universe can be no smaller than that. I have some questions about the methodology, but it seems sound.
tdarnell 5 years ago
Thanks Tony, I'll look at your website. I also saw that paper. If I understand correctly, the lower limit on the cosmic radius is a result of the premise that they should be able to detect repeating patterns in the CMB if it were any smaller, is that correct?
r06u3AP 5 years ago
What we see is history, the distence is many ly bigger.
So what we ever will see, the distance is bigger.
The light is coming to us but the object is going away

I'm sorry, but you have sounded kinda ingenuous to me too. Is it really necessary to ask questions in such an arrogant way? We ain't playing chess here, bobby fischer. this ain't no IQ pissing contest, fo' sure. Thanks for the polite way of telling me you think I'm a jerk. But can you give me an example of how I asked a question in an arrogant way? Perhaps I can't see how I come across due to a lack of objectivity? Thanks!
r06u3AP 5 years ago
I think the expansion of the Universe has to do with Dark Energy, rather than Dark Matter? I believe to have read this somewhere. Dark Matter is what keeps solar systems and galaxy's together, Dark Energy does the exact opposite only, you can't observe either of the two.

I've read quite a few things about the nature of the universe and while I've heard a lot about the fact that its expanding I think this is the first time I've heard that it's expansion is accelerating...can you explain how or why this is?
P.S. Of course her seat would be less comfortable, or else she would fall asleep while reading.
Abbruzzesi 5 years ago
I have heard about the acceleration of the expansion more than once. It's something that baffled the scientists for years. I think it's been said that the acceleration is due to dark matter. Don't ask me what that is..

yeah, actually, and really coincidently , I was just reading the new issue of "Scientific America" and it was all about dark matter. It's a good issue, you. should check it out. Thanks for the reply though.

Another great video T,
I have a question, why 11 days?
and will you be covering string theory, dark matter?
Something interesting I saw on the discovery channel was saying something like if a big enough meteor hit earth it would wipe us out, then we would have another 65 million years for some species to arise again, then another meteor, then another species to rise after that. About 3-4 times before either the iniverse collided or the sun burnt out.
