I think electronics technicians associates degrees are good degrees. There are tons of service and maintenance jobs on everything from gov to service equipment. Get some good computer experience and a couple certs. And you should be set for life. Not the highest paid but extremely versatile degree path. I think being versatile is the most important thing about any career.

I think electronics technicians associates degrees are good degrees. There are tons of service and maintenance jobs on everything from gov to service equipment. Get some good computer experience and a couple certs. And you should be set for life. Not the highest paid but extremely versatile degree path. I think being versatile is the most important thing about any career.

That why we should be telling our kids to go for technical hands on jobs. No more jobs where it can be virtually reproduced elsewhere or off shored. Green jobs are BS. There are no margins in that stuff. More solar=less unionized jobs from coal plants, hydroelectric, and such. The infrastructure is puny and cheap in comparison. If you can go to school for 6 months and have a green job, how much wage leverage are you going to have? You will have 10000 guys waiting for you to quit.

ALWAYS. 1/4-1/3 of its residents took out mortages on their home and the rest lifted their SUV's trying to stay afloat on service sector jobs. That's funny. I have a highly skilled job for a major tech company - was supposed to be recession proof. Guess what? My company is shipping all the jobs to India to help the bottom line.

I still have my job for now. But many of my coworkers have been let go over past 2 years in a steady slow-bleed of jobs. The problem is that they are making workplace unhospitable (no pay raises, more work with less people to do it, more weekend time, longer hours, etc) because if you speak up and tell them you don't like it they will say "Well then, go ahead and find a job somewhere else." End of story.

My company and others have "committed" (they use that term) to embracing outsourcing as the future for the jobs market. This trend will only escalate until all hi-tech jobs are in the BRIC countries.

I agree with Trazom24. I will add that as long as the housing market slides, banks are in trouble. They are making money off the steep yield curve and essentially free money, but it won't cancel their increasing losses on mortgages. BTW, rising yields on treasuries and mortgage rates bode poorly for affordability going forward. I saw an article stating that all this stimulus and bailouts is pushing the long end of the yield curve up, despite the gubment wanting stimulus to help homeowners

Banks May Need New Stress Tests, Panel Says
The federal government should repeat its stress tests of the nation's largest banks if its assumptions about the severity of the economic downturn prove too rosy, according to a congressional oversight report to be released today.
Ya THINK?!?! Given that the "stress tests' were based on an 8.9% avg unemployment level, I'd say these ROCKET SCIENTISTS are on to something.
