  • What a gorgeous voice, and it sounds very natural. He sounds better to my ears than Pavorotti, but then I like a few others better than LP.

  • Trained singer and good qualities but does not come close to Franco Corelli.

  • This tenor is better than any I've ever heard singing this piece. Beautiful. Thank you.

  • Bravo!

  • The most beautiful voice singing as Puccini intended and not as a rabble rousing football anthem !

Bravo! Le plus grand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the most beautiful interpretation of nessun dorma, well said, mawyxa. his voice is so clear!

  • Maravillosa voz!

    Inigualada!

  • Better than Pavarotti

  • MUY BUENO!!!!!!!!!!! QUE CANTANTE EXTRAORDINARIO!!!! POR FAVOR!!! MUY BUENOS VIDEOS!!! SALUDOS DE SANTA FE, ARGENTINA!

  • Beautifully rich, luscious timbre and sung as Puccini intended. The finest tenor I have ever heard.

  • His voice has similarities to Bjorling and Carreras and Sometimes you hear some DiStefano there. A great instrument.

  • An amazing voice, his performance of this beautiful song brought tears to my eyes also. Bravo!!!

  • very nicely done one of his gems imo.

  • ¡¡Bravo!!

  • Bravo!!! Best tenor ever!!

  • IMPRESIONANTE, EXTRAORDINARIO!!!!

  • bravissimo!!!!!

  • this is the only performance i have have ever heard that has brought a tear to my eye.:)

  • @bodiloto Una volta tanto siamo daccordo.

    Caruso,Fletta,De Lucia,Taccani,Marconi,O'Sullivan,Paoli,Piccaluga,Pertile,Merli,Masini,Del Monaco,Corelli,Usunov,Minchev,Nikolov,Bonisolli,Giacomini etc.etc.

    Questi Signori erano Calaf.

    E tu ?

    Ciao !

  • It as Aragalls 70th birthday on the 6th June please will everyone make it a very special day for this gentle ,kind man.

  • The greatest tenor of the 20th century as Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti have all stated. To hear Nessum Dorma sung as Puccini intented it ,compared with forced notes of Pavarotti (no wonder football fans liked it) is a joy . Truly a God given voice.

  • That's not true, Pavarotti said greatest of his time. I don't think any ever said greatest of the 20th Century.

  • Pavorotti told me that Aragall had the greatest voice as did Carreras and Domingo As Carreras said if only Aragall recorded more they , The Three Tenors, would all be in the second division.

  • That's the voice though, a compliment toward a singer's natural voice does not neccesarily pertain to the complete tenor.

Pavarotti didn't think the voice of Schipa was a beautiful one, but he loved him for his incredible line.

  • We will have to disagree,as Pavarotti admired every aspect of Aragalls voice including his line. You must realise that many singers sang for commercial reasons only and had powerful agents who made money out of promoting their meagre talents.

  • I know that Pavarotti adored Aragall, after all those I Capuleti... performances, how could he not?

My issue was that you said all three said he was the greatest of the 20th Century. I don't recall any such statement from any of them. Pavarotti's favourite was di Stefano, and he considered Bjorling the greatest technical tenor I believe.

I don't think many great singers were commercially driven to start singing, none of the Three Tenors were.

  • Aragall and Carreras used to have the same singing teacher in Barcelona, maestro Puig.

  • Yes , but Aragall was the better singer and was taught for a pittance by Professor Badiali in Milan. Within six months Aragall won the Voci Verdiane and in less than a year made his debut at La Scala. At 23 he became an overnight sensation.

  • ofcourse, I remember the story now,I have a magazine where he talks about that, there was hardly any money and he had to sleep in a church...I met him in Chicago and he was such a warm and modest person, thx for your information.

  • I enjoy comparing the genteel, sweet sound of Aragall to the testosterone fueled, hyper butch renditions of MDM and love both. Thanks for posting.

  • jaume, t'estimem

i poques coses més es poden dir

  • A great performance indeed.

Those of you mentioning Fleta forget Lazaro and then there is also Cortis...

For me Aragall is the true alternative of Pavarotti.

Not better, but at his best equal or almost equal.

  • Wow, I love this. Very nice.

  • Listening to Aragall in this aria, it is not hard to see why he has developed a following among certain enthusiasts. He is a very appealing, well-mannered singer. Bravo!

  • Imo THE BEST nessun dorma i've heard!

    Bravo Maestro

  • me pareció escuchar a Corelli. Prefiero a Aragall en el trovador. No hay nadie mejor que él

  • Divin

  • Only Mario del Monaco compares on this. Pav rated high on this aria as well.

  • the greatest singer and a fantastic man,if you have heard him sing live, you will know what i mean.

  • probably the finest tenor ever.

  • Superlative! AS good or better than I have ever heard. Bravo!

  • Aragall has a fresh and clean voice with sharp climax !!

  • Korny-Do you even know what you're talking about? MINGO (where's the Do?) would give up lots of things to have Aragall's voice and technique. Your young age doesn't give you the privilege to make stupid comments which are divorced from reality. Try to educate yourself before forming an opinion!

  • korny87-Miguel Fleta was the best, and he was followed by Aragall and kraus and or Domingo. Cheers

  • the best nessun dorma

  • Fleta, Kraus and Argall were the best tenors teh spanish speaking world has produced but for some odd reason people has fixated on pedestrian tenors such as Domingo, Carreras, Villazon,Vargas etc.

  • TheInquisitive4Ever- I fully agree on Fleta being the best, and it is hard to choose between Kraus and Aragall for second and third. Cheers.

    There were none better!

  • Paul-There is no point in trying to choose among the greats. It's like asking "which Nobel Laureate is better than the other?" It's a futile endeavor. They all created something unique and excellent in their own way and that is all that matters. The idea is to join the ranks of the Greats. The rest is useless fodder for nonsensical debates.

  • TheInquisitive4Ever- I fully agree,as beauty is in the eye of the beholder-music is judged by the ears and soul of the listener. Best wishes.

  • Paul-Please not that there is an prerequisite to what I said. One has to be one of the greats first. Not all tenors liked by people are Great artistically. Cheers.

  • TheInquisitive4Ever- The so called greatest authorities on this ratings business-say that If he did not have a problem with severe stage fright-that he would have rated up there with the very best. Even wikipedia says this.

  • Paul-That is absolutely correct. If he had a more outgoing personality he would have been known much more. But even the way he was, he elevated himself to the levels of others Greats who have gone before him.

  • TheInquisitiver4Ever- I could not agree with you more. Best wishes.

  • beautiful performance! glorious high A's and B's!!! wow...

  • Also, saying who is "the best" trivializes the voice. On a side note, the orchestra is very good here.

  • Che bella voce!It is a shame he didn't receive more attention and acclaim in the US than he did.Signore Aragall is superb lyric tenor.I like him MUCH better than Carreras. And his timbre and tone is much more attractive and appealing than that of Domingo.Mille grazie for posting this great piece.Bravissimo Aragall!

  • There are no words to discribe Aragall!

His high C is the mos beautiful i've ever heard from enyone.

    Bravo Maestro!

  • Society at large was not consumed with consumerism back in the days of Gigli and del Monaco. Get a clue. We live in an age where American Idol contestants get more people to vote than major elections to top offices in a given country. If Domingo were singing in the days of Gigli or del Monaco (prime years) he'd be booed off of the stage.

  • Be factual. Domingo tried lyric roles...failed. Was mediocre at best. Tried to market himself as a dramatic tenor later on..and it was a joke. Then he moved onto the german repertoire. I suppose he's trying to pass himself as a top heldentenor...lol. 3rd times is a charm eh? lol

  • Domingo even filled bigger opera houses. It's amazing how many tickets one can sell with enough publicity behind you. Under such circumstances, Domingo could have crapped on a silver plate and people would have still consumed it. The idea is to create artistic excellence. Domingo sung 130 roles with acceptable goodness for unsuspecting and undiscerning masses.

  • jrynz, you should check out aragall singing in faust, totally beautiful,he is also the best in tosca, which is available on dvd,i have purchased some of his latest cds,he still has the best voice i the world.

  • He really does this justice. That top B at the end is priceless, truly priceless.

  • giacomo aragall, the worlds greatest singer, check out his latest cds,he still has a superb voice,he`s also a really nice man,we have spoken to him many times,as long as the fans are happy,he is happy.

  • I agree thank you for your words

  • does he still record and perform?

  • Respectable top tenors try singing what they can in its pristine form to the maximum extend possible, and would resort to transposing as a last resort if there is a viable reason to do so. In MINGO (Where's the Do)'s case, it has been a career long habit which is DISHONEST. But given his salesmanship talent, profit was given precedence to artistry.

  • More operatic roles were transposed at least a semitone for Domingo than any other tenor. And still, as a supposed top tenor, he's struggle with a A4 that many tenors could produce day in and day out without a problem. Transposing is not only dishonest, but also very disrespectful to fellow artists as the entire score needs to be transposed, requiring everybody to sing in a way they'd normally would not do. No other tenor has received such a "carte blanche" as MINGO...

  • do you know that Domingo was able to fill big houses in the way Delmonaco or Nilsson did? anyway he change that way of belting after his 40s. Another thing is that a voices like Gigli, Bjoerling, Gedda, does not have connection with Domingo voice which of them would pass from singing L'elisir to Parsifall or Rigoletto to Sigmund.Fleta? Roaswange?

  • As far singing is concerned, Domingo has SQUAT over Aragall and Pava. His 130 (now) roles is a sign of artistic prostitution. He sung almost all roles just good enough to fill the house thanks to the aggressive marketing machine which backs him up. He's an excellebt businessman in that regard. However, that has nothing to do with artistic excellence. Domingo always sounded hooted, throaty, monochromatic and PUSHED. All attributes of poor technique.

  • Best Nessun Dorma of all

  • Pavarotti and Domingo said in interviews that Aragall was the best of them, but he just couldn't handle the pressure of stage. Corelli had the same problem (main reason why he retired a bit early) but he managed to beat it a bit.

  • Maestro Aragall had intense stage fright of clinical proportions in his earlier years, which prevented him to gain more recognition and acclaim in the opera world. Essentially, he remained as one of the top lyric tenors for the connaisseurs. What a spendid voice!

  • Carreras and Domingo fanatics should listen to Maestro Aragall (and Maestro Kraus). Those two pale in comparison to Aragall and Kraus among the spanish-speaking tenors. What a splendid rendition of Nessun Dorma!

  • VERY GOOD!!!

    BRAVO

    BRAVO

    BRAVO

  • In an interview, Pavarotti recalls there were three young tenors at that time, himself, Domingo and Aragall. And he continued, "the best of the three was most probably Aragall, I don't know if he still sings now."

    That's Aragall.

  • one of the most underated tenors of all time!

  • Comment removed

  • Well, for me Aragall is the best of all time, so maybe I overate him.

  • "What could I not have done with Aragall's voice" - Pavarotti.

  • No, you could never overate this extraordinary man.

  • I see you like Beniamino Gigli. I actually saw him in concert in Heidelberg in 1952! As to the ranking of tenors I only list 3 favorites as there are so many out there, past and present and some of them are wonderful but incomparable such as Caruso and Richard Tauber. My top 3 are Corelli, Bjorling and Fritz Wunderlich but that's just my taste and everyone is entitled their own.

  • Bel timbro vocale, piacevole, ottimo tenore io
