I like that even though the mother's an absolute fanatic, she's still portrayed as a human being. It's clear that she loves Jess, even when she's being monstrously cruel and possessive. She's obviously terrified that someone might take her away, and with her parenting, no wonder!
Bloody great, the days when programmes from the BBC where made to educate and entertain giving an understanding from one generation to the next, unlike today where the BBC exploits the public and its standing by churning out PC (politicaly correct) material whose only effect results in the dumbing down social context of todays culture.
