If 'The Inner Light' was the greatest tear jerker episode of TNG, 'Duet' was undoutably the biggest tear jerker of DS9. Oh, 'The Visitor' gave it a run for its money, but this episode was so much weightier (not least because 'The Visitor' ended with everything being undone so none of it ever really happened). This scene encapsulated everything that DS9 did that none of the other Star Trek series could.
@MarcelSM01 there's a trailer for it on youtube. Do a search for 'The Man in the Glass Booth'. Apparently it wasn't very good, but I haven't seen it myself.

DS9 was great, it had a great writing staff, Brannon Braga didnt write a single episode for DS9 thats why the scripts were always top toch, Rick Berman help write a two parter but thats it in DS9 entire run..
Now when you compare the story's to voyager, I know who I perfer
@DataTasha4Ever I know, and also... Irrelevant. When TNG ended they shouldn't have made two Trek shows compete with one another. Naturally people picked the one that seemed most familiar and missed out on the best of the two.
This episode is one that i always hold up as being the best that Trek has to offer.
Ther performances are magnificent, especially by Harris Yulin.
Here in particular is one of the finest examples of acting I've ever witness, as well as summing up my feelings on the episode perfectly.
We start this episode with Kira hating any Cardassian involved with that mine. In her words: "If he was at Gallitep he's guilty." even if he was just a clerk.
This show was the darkest of the trek shows, and by far the best acted. With a cast of some of the most talented actors! Alot better then these shit birds who get paid 20 million a movie.
This entire episode was basically written around three scenes of Yulin talking to the camera....and yet it's one of the best episodes in all of Trekdom.
i couldn't stop crying when i saw this. i was surprised that a TV show, star trek, can have such an effect on your emotions. i had to look it up to see if others felt the same way! i look forward to watching the rest of Deep Space 9.
I watched the DS9 extras and Nana Visitor (Kira Neris) said that she loved this episode because when you are acting with a great actor it forces you to raise your game, like a tennis game against a world class opponent. Against Harris Yulin in this scene, you are playing against a DemiGod. F****ng wonderful! Damn this shit gets you all teared up!
Ahh man what a powerful scene and a what a f***ing line! "Don't you know who I am? I'm your nemesis. I'm your nightmare!". It's a pity you don't get oscars for tv show performaces. Harris Yulin certainly deserved one.
I met Ms Visiter at Dragoncon 2011.I told her how great this episode was.She was very nice and thanked me.I have to admit this was a great ep and I was NOT expecting what happened at the end. This ep let Kira grow into more than just a character always in a bad mood and having a chip on her shoulder.
I must admit, when I first watched DS9 I was not prepared for this episode based on what I'd seen from the 1st season. The stunning power of this episode is not lost even with repeated viewing. Even TNG, which I like a little better than DS9, produced nothing like this in its first season.
@mjax1111 While not having the same level of power in the content I particularly enjoyed the scene in TNG's "The Inner Light" (The one with the probe that Picard learns to play that flute thing) (Don't want to say too much for those that haven't seen it) But the last section of that was pretty special for me. Comparing Picard with Harris Yulin here as both being powerhouses of acting.
@childofthesun32 Doh sorry, not Picard, I meant Patrick Stewart (Patrick apparently hates being thought of as Picard all the time) But really, who cares about acting recognition and awards when you have become legend.
@MarcelSM01 No, what silences me is what happened in the real world when the Jews went after those responsible for the Holocaust. People defended the butchers, claiming that because they had hidden for years and created new lives, they should be spared from justice over murdering so many people. The Jews were portrayed as the bad guys who wouldn't let it go.
For my money the best scene in this episode takes place a few minutes before when "Darheel" says "I admit EVERYTHING! Don't you see Major? You Cannot undue what I have done! The dead will still be dead! My accomplishments speak for themselves! Can YOU say the SAME?"
@Meushell True that. Also note that paradoxically, Marritza is essentially Cardassian in his loyalty to the state, only that he feels that the state must repent to survive. And as windrunner75 pointed out, he's ready to die for his beliefs yet identifies himself as a coward. Truly a fascinating and conflicted character.
This scene is amongst my most favorite moments in television. The drama, the wordplay between the two characters is sublime, as every fact starts to knock more and more of his argument away. How many other shows can you ever say featured an episode where someone openly admits to being a coward, even as they commit an act of the deepest honour?
@sdegroot1 Yeah I think ti helped her understand what happened to people was monstrous but the Cardassians arnt monsters. I think her attitude shifted to blaming the individuals rather than the race.
If this episode had never happened, the entire Bajoran/Cardassian tension would've felt meaningless. In fact, DS9 may not have survived as many seasons as it did. This episode provided a standard of drama and writing that the DS9 staff then KNEW they could achieve. And then confidently they gave us the AMAZING Season 5, 6, 7.
Wouldn't get shit like this in TNG or Voy

All-time favourite episode of DS9. I've been trying to track down the play this episode was based on, I heard the movie was not as impressive.

@MarcelSM01 It wasn't. It was based on a book, which was made into a play, and later a movie.
The book is "The Man in the Glass Booth" by Robert Shaw. The movie has the same title, and was released in the mid-1970's.
It is about a Jewish holocaust survivor who falsifies his identification as a Nazi war criminal.
