Great shot, entertaining and amusing video, but what about the actual photography details!? Camera lens, camera settings, filters, post-processing? C'mon man!
@hulio1987 Surrealism was kind of the point. Put down the "photography as documentation" attitude and pick up "photography as art" instead; if you're a photographer, it will make your own shots a lot better in every genre.
isnt that a little dangerous for the assistant and others involved? if he falls in to the water with the battery and lamp.. I bet that would not be nice.
I think he should have protected or waterproofed the battery at least.
@fateless78 this is a legitimate observation, I have used a Q flash under the exact same circumstances, and I do waterproof everything, I think that Joe Mc Nally been who he is, forgot security on this one. In the other hand if you disrespect other peoples comments , you will get disrespect back.. plain and simple. Go watch the Fro or something else noob.
@estudio100rafa ok sorry I now think differently about you, ur not bitchy but I think u are gay. when you cry like this tell ur mommy to spank u in the ass u lil faggit. lol. watch out for the batteries. lmao..
@fateless78 what a massive ignorant idiot you are, these batteries are NOT 9 volt batteries like the ones in your dildo you idiot, these actually high power, high voltage lamps and are packed with warnings about how to use them.
@estudio100rafa The Quadra units and cables are weather sealed (even if the shoulder-slung battery pack isn't enough for you), and the battery isn't the main potential injury source in any case -- the most likely point of danger is the flash tube socket.
@anties123 elinchrom quadra rx its a corss between a speedlight and a strobe. its great. portable, light and really powerful for its size! i elinchrom quadra rx a head is aprox 400w as opposed to canon 580ex i's 65w.
@phdphotograph88 Elinchrome uses Skyports that allow you to adjust the power right from the transmitter.... or you can ask your assistant holding the light!
The background pop still? You mean the subject isn't blurry while the water is blurry? His shutter speed, from the looks of the water rushing in and the blur on it, was probably 1/4 or 1/8 second. The strobe was probably in second curtain to flash at the end of the shutter. So what you would do is meter for the sunset but keep the shutter speed up enough that the subject doesn't blur, and use a flash to illuminate the subject. And then lots of post, obviously to get the sunset like it is.
To that person that said he should be using the H4D-200MS, Joe McNally believes highly in the Nikon flash automation system. Can't do that with a 'blad.
@thestorey Well if you would tke the time to look at whats going on, you would see that he actually did exactly what a good assistent would do - Make sure the light was always focussed on the subject even when the subject moved around!
what I like about this is that although I've been following you for many years we don't often get to see how a master interacts with their subject. I would love to see more of this because this can be a far trickier skill than balancing ambient with flash while dragging the shutter to create motion in the surf.
