He may live in the UK but the offence was against the US and extraditing to the country where the offence was committed is how things are done. The fact that Gary McKinnon is on the spectrum is separate and apart from the charges. It also doesn't matter that the accused hasn't been on holiday outside of the UK. That, too, is immaterial. If you break the law, you have to expect repercussions. These are the repercussions of Gary McKinnon's behaviour.
