I just measured my door hinges. This show makes my look like a weirdo to my roommate.

I've measured the spaces between the hinges of my door and they are both 8 inches away from the top/bottom.My door has a middle hinge too though, so I don't know if that rules my door out.

I think it can be safely said that the 'door hinge measurement' bit is the least interesting question there's ever been on QI. Alan and Stephen's stories were good though, obviously.

That hinge stuff is nonsense as far as all my doors are concerned. In England where many house are ancient they probably were built before inches were invented. Or maybe it's a confusion because the English can't decide between inches and metric. Top hinge, metric. Bottom, inches.

Stephen, you liar. My top and bottom door hinges are both 8 inches from the top/bottom of the door. :-P (And yes, I dug out a tape measure just to see.)

In my apartment the front door hinges are 5"/8", the bathroom are 5"/11" and the bedroom are 5"/10".

This is an older building though, so I wonder if the idea of standardizing hinge heights is fairly recent.

That is quite possible. My door is only 2 years old. Maybe (when I'm home alone so nobody will ask) I'll check the other doors in the house to see if there is a difference.

Ah but how do they look, when looking down at them.

Looking down at the door from up close, the bottom hinge does seem too low. From my seat at my desk 5 feet or so from the door, they look about even, which is what prompted the measuring in the first place.
