  • Only musicians understand Sonic Youth. They are one of those bands that bands are really into.

  • @littleteethkeith It's sweet how shitty barely "indie" bands basically imitate the sound of one Sonic Youth record.

  • @wrarmatei it's called evolution.

  • @TheJesus35400 No, it's called derivative and poorly-conceived.

  • You nothing better to do, then to get upset and mad because you weren't born in the genre and never heard anything better than Drake, Lil Wayne, or any other talentless ass clown musicians.

  • dont bullshit just listen to the fucking song ttorres89

  • Born in 74. . if any of your moms are hot, I may be your dad. ?

  • born in 95

  • i Born in 1991 hehe

  • also, kim gordon = rock goddess

  • So glad im growing up listening to good bands. I'd like to thank my boyfriend, my dad, my boyfreind's mum, my mum...

  • This song Rocks.

  • @skeetshooter99 Hype! and Such Hawks Such Hounds are close runner-ups.

  • I think she was smokin' hot at one time.

  • haha-punk broke in 1991..

  • @nathanoman1 as in broke into the mainstream....

  • 1991 was the best year ever cause i was born and this happened

  • teenage all around the world rise up!

  • Riffs convertidos en mareas perfectas... mareas malditas...

  • which song is that indian-sounding music at the end of this video, starting at 4:32?

  • I'm from peru and i started listening to sonic youth back in 1993, am i doing ok? :D love this band, they have that old punk rock vibe with hella good music and btw they going to Peru in a couple weeks.

  • i agree people need to listen to them, i was too young and i didnt get it, now i do, and its amazing!! the music that i hear on the "alternative" stations (ect) is just cheep shit rip offs of this.

    ((your roots are showing))

  • So Sonic Yputh are no more, according to the Gruan.. Well so what and humph. Apparently Henry Rollins is a poet now. And I've heard him on Radio 4 so he must be a poet.

This seems a bit of a non story in music terms, but that's probably cos I'm old, I'm the same age as Lydia which makes me a survivor of our era.

  • Yeahh ... we love Sonic Youth they have a great Sound...!!!

If you like some german grunge you should hear this: Drunken Hippies - Sad things

    Peace.Love.Grunge

  • Ah I smell cheap vodka and Basics! Damn I had some fun in high school.

  • wild song, i live with this song

  • The Year Punk Broke ...

  • This sucks, u mad hipsters?

  • @bogmire777 not mad, just hip

  • @bogmire777 Hipsters? This song has been around way before hipsters existed. If you're going to troll...at least know what you're talking about.

  • @bogmire777 No...I'm not actually. I'm just pointing out what you said made no sense and you are trolling. But you go ahead and keep using your internet memes for responses since you can't seem to form an original thought of your own.

  • @PretentiousHousefly Ah, the old "I will try and make you feel beneath me by being extremely logical and polite." response, no thank you, I dont care to continue this conversation. Keep listening to your crappy music, I'll be listening to Led Zeppelin. Blocked.

  • @bogmire777 I never said I was a fan of Sonic Youth...you assumed that. I already told you I was pointing out to you were logically wrong and you were trolling, which I was right about. And you are beneath me when you have to resort to getting reactions from people to amuse yourself.

  • @PretentiousHousefly You are really obsessed with me aren't you? YouTube wont let me block you for some reason, Im seriously done, you can try and take the high ground, whatever, I really dont care or find any importance in your thoughts, Im really bored with this, dont bother replying, I wont read it.

  • @bogmire777 Obsessed with you? I'm responding to what you say. You don't want me to reply to you...stop talking to me then. And you do care what I say...since you've cared enough to reply to me.

  • @bogmire777 Well you clearly are too stupid to understand what he did to you. He was not polite at all, in fact he was a sarcastic asshole to you, which is what he should've been because you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Furthermore, he was extremely logical for a reason THATS WHY YOUR COMMENT WAS STUPID: it was extremely illogical. You're just trying to avert his calling out of you, and it didn't work, you just said some more illogical stupid shit.

  • @kingcole55 Wow you people are really into this, I NO LONGER GIVE A DAMN. I dont care what you pointless counter-culture peons think, I WILL NO LONGER READ ANY COMMENTS TOWARDS ME ON THIS VIDEO. Hipsters are soulless fools who in their dedication to not become part of the machine have made themselves less unique then any other group, you probably dont consider yourself a hipster, but hipsters rarely do.

  • @bogmire777 It's funny cause you've said you won't respond anymore twice now. And what makes you think only hipsters like this? Hipster music is generally considered to be indie not punk... but I probably shouldn't spend too much time trying to explain things to you since you clearly do not and will not ever be able to understand what any unique art form is about because you are so wrapped up in the status quo of things.

  • oh my god, why the hell am I gettin wet?

  • I clearly see this video has 5 dislikes, yet there's no red in the like/dislike bar.

    Their opinions don't matter ^_^

  • love it.favourite tune (one of) from sonic youth

  • Sonic Fucking youth!!!

  • They will come to Brazil again \ o /.

I Need to go to this show !!!

  • This song is about about coming out of hibernation into a summer vacation. It's about traveling out west. Its hitchhiking through hallucination nation station.

  • ian old girlfriend years ago would come round to my student accommodation and we would drink and listen to this. i still love it.

  • Great song...classic Youth

  • Thurston Moore = <3

  • Thurston, give me your knowledge. mmm

  • This may sound weird, but everything seems unreal when i listen to this song...

  • one of the best songs ever. simple as that

  • the youth need to learn the roots and listen to sonic youth and all other early music.

  • @ttorres89 Velvets, Stooges, Television, Patti Smith.

  • @ttorres89 And we do.

  • @ttorres89 i feel the same

i´m so sad, that the commercial finaly won (take all the carsting shows, lady gagas and djs... -.-)

  • @ttorres89 Yeah dude, there is hope. I'm 15 and love Nirvana and all and hate today's crap! So does my sister and she is 14. :)

  • @ttorres89 lol, "roots" "early music"

  • It never happened. It was all a dream.

  • they really have some taste of the velvet underground..

  • @catalinaMELOMANA i agree. always thought of sonic youth as a great bridge between the VU and a lot of newer bands

  • Thurston's voice reminds of The Velvet Underground.

  • It's an amazing song like all the songs of this amazing band!

  • ohbutyouwillpet

  • no sonic youth in America today.. just a bunch of sleeping sheeple

  • my childhood on this song *-*

  • Kim Gordon, sit on my face :)

    hail Sonic Youth!!!!!!

  • I'm so thankful for Sonic Youth (and Hüker Dü and The Replacements) for getting me through in the dark until dawn or until my Walkman batteries gave out. Sonic Youth sheltered me from Bon Jovi, Wham! and Madonna. Thanks for that. Man, I feel sorry for the poor hump that's never heard of Sonic Youth.

  • @nightjammer

Sonic youth are awesome but Bon jovi is great.

You can what you want. But He rocks.

I get where your coming from about Madonna and wham But shut the hell up about bon jovi. yeah? Good. thanks Bye.

  • @Hands2Yourself say what you want*

  • @Hands2Yourself Ah, Bon Jovi, that paragon of innovation and brilliance to whom we all owe a debt...... But seriously he's pretty talentless...

  • @TheParanoidAndroid1

nah, he isnt. He's pretty damn awesome.

You wanna think he's talentless have fun. But there is no way

in hell im going to agree with you.

  • @Hands2Yourself i dont like his music but i wouldnt call him talentless because it takes talent to get to where he was plus part of music is not caring about being judged which is what bands like sonic youth stand for

  • @Hands2Yourself

Let me get this straight, you pusnut douchebag idiot. You're standing up for Bon Jovi AND YOU'RE THREATENING ME?!! Listen up, idiot: I'll meet you anywhere you say in the general vicinity of my home and I WILL KICK YOUR FAGGOT ASS! I'm not kidding. Back your shit up and make your move, asshole. I'm serious.

  • @nightjammer

    Dude. Seriously. Its freaking youtube!

Chill out. I'm seriously not threatening you!

I'm expressing my friken opinion! Didn't realise that was something

wrong but whatever, Just friggen chill

  • @nightjammer Sonic Youth has actually based their whole career on kicking faggot ass, drinkin some cold beers and beating up on the woman a little until she learns to cook their eggs right. Bon Jovi clearly doesnt have the same capacity for kicking faggot ass that Sonic Youth prides themselves on.

  • @nichobert

"kicking faggot ass"? LOL! So true! All hail Sonic Youth!

  • @nightjammer Haha nice troll =D

  • @nightjammer How can it be bullshit to express an opinion? Even Sonic Youth adored Madonna.

  • @nightjammer man bon jovi isnt as bad as like Rihanna and stuff!

  • i did this song for my 8th grade report a year ago and everyone said this song sucked...rap can suck my dick

  • @coolhomes2 a huge chodester in fact...

  • ACL Pick #1 The best dual lead guitar band since Television. Bassist is coolest rock chick ever (sorry, Kim). Drummer is highly underrated and perfect for the band. Helped pave the careers of Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill), Spike Jonze (director), Jason Lee (actor), rehabbed Mike Watt after D. Boon (Minutemen) died, and Daydream Nation makes great driving music (so does Goo, Dirty, Rather Ripped, A Thousand Leaves...).

  • some bands just got it.

  • Wow obvious troll much? Eh mike?

  • i only saw them once in belgium but i`ll never forget it...

  • Man Thurston never ages. This video is almost 20 years old and he looks exactly the same now.

  • @tylenol2k7 This is so true!

  • i love this song, i

  • Saw them on this tour at the Channel in Boston, what a show.

  • Immense tune

  • oh kim gordon, how i want thee! :)

    hails to the sonic youth!

  • @maxeypad yea kim is luvly *:)

  • Thurston has hardly aged in nearly 20 years... it's amazing.

  • The song is about J. Mascis

  • Sonic Youth forever.

  • This was from "punks not dead". I was into this. I was in my teens...

  • @skexee

it's "the year punk broke" not punks not dead haha ;)

  • tiene 19 años esto... pero igual es increíble :D

  • I now it's only rock and roll but i like it.

  • Where is the original clip omg QQ.

  • "People... of the Universe! Tonight... tonight! ...will be the night, that the skies will open!"

"And spray forth... the Divine Hand with pointed finger and say, "Everybody! You're not just a duck, you're human! You are human!"

"Go forth! Go forth and thrash!"

*Days of wine and roses (European tour'91 with Nirvana, isn't it?)*Sonic Youth Life (Summer 2008 - Alex Winehouse and me)

  • The best rock song

  • i want Kim Gordon soooo badly

did i mention Sonic Youth totally rule?

  • @maxeypad who doesn't want kim gordon, but she's 56 or 57 so i wouldn't tap that

  • @yosimite20 i know i know...i'd still try....

  • @yosimite20 i would

  • @yosimite20 - Kim Gordon is the Nina Hartley of punk rock.

  • Awesomesauce!

  • this speaks to my teenage mind

  • Its kinda weird that the name sonic youth means that you pretty much don't age, which is exactly what the members are doing. Is there something they're not telling us?

  • @TheToastBrothers I thought exactly the same thing. They're still "youthful" in attitude& look. Maybe their name is some kind of magickal sigil . If most other bands of their age had been called Sonic Youth the irony would have been hilarious.

  • Always brilliant Sonic Youth. Remember their "Ciccone Youth" White album? I still have it but not a record player, it's busted.

  • this song is best in the morning.

  • this song is best in the morning.

  • I love that the concert poster that is briefly flashed in the video lists Nirvana as a special guest, in other words the opener.

  • Im pretty sure Thurston's hair has stayed exactly the same for the last thirty years.

  • haahahhaah LOL

  • @poddylamb

It is strange, he doesn't alter at all.

He always looks like a high-school teenager.

  • not only his hair but he looks exactly the same! i cant believe hes 51.

  • @poddylamb

Fucki, i wish i could say the same. My hair is going the way of the dinosaur.

  • @poddylamb

nah there was the mid 90s where it got cut really short, look at the diamond sea video

  • This is one hell of a dirty live version

  • Merci...

    Love the Sonic Youth

  • I heard this song was written about a fantasy Thurston had where J. Mascis from Dinosaur Junior became president.

  • it's definitely about j. mascis, dunno about the president part.

  • @dkdkssks Yep

  • @dkdkssks J should be president!

  • @dkdkssks That's awesome.

  • @TheTrainRex

    kamim@onet.pl my adres

  • @kamim6 What?

  • @dkdkssks lol, that would be an awesome reality!!

  • @dkdkssks i think the song its self is a fantasy.

  • @dkdkssks Awesome. Dinosaur Jr. is my second favorite alternative band.

  • The first SY song I ever heard.

It was love at first glance...

  • you mean "it was love at the first guitar note" lol

  • Classic. I remember doing a speech on this album in HS and playing this song, and I nearly crapped my pants when the most stereotypical cheerleader in the entire class started ROCKING OUT in her seat when the song picked up.

  • Something to talk about at your 10-year-reunion!

  • @notsusan you should have gone with "World Looks Red" :)

  • @notsusan you would have been in esteemed company. Shitting on stage is very punk rock, e.g. GG Allin & David Yow.

Brilliant song from one of the most consistently great bands around. EVOL's my favourite SY album though.

  • @notsusan

Nice man. Great image. Love her/loathe her. Sonic Youth!

  • @notsusan You bang her? o-o

  • love the editing!!!!!

  • great Ranaldo!

  • Off of "1991: The Year That Punk Broke". Best concert video ever made.

  • holy shiznit they're getting old

  • I just realized today that they're in their 50s now and it blew my mind, just like when the local "classic rock" station started playing Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Dang.

Also I swear they all still look exactly the same but vaguely wrinklier. Wow.

  • punkrokkkkkkkkkkkkk attitud yeeeeeeeeehhh

  • Kim Gordon looks hot in this video

  • This live shit sounds like crap. I had ALL live recordings. Youtube sucks now. All the real videos have been removed !!! GREED.

  • PUT ALL THE REAL VIDEOS UP GREEDY BASTARDS! So lame, they took every good sounding vid from REM, the smiths, dm, madonna, sonic youth. Any good band, all gone! BASTARDS!

  • Whoa, a golly-wog at 1:32.

  • Not to be gay or anything but sonic youths songs really hit me

  • mad gay

  • Comment removed

  • simply awesome. Thank you Sonic Youth

  • This footage as old as me.

I wish I were this timeless.

  • the worst example of this i've seen is the comments for Syd Barrett

postings, this is pretentiousness mixed with LSD, what a combo!!! You deserve a positive what's up from a real deal Ohio rocker, (me)

so here it is, "what's up" by the way i love this song live and yes it is a bit shabby, but whatever it's SONIC FUCKING YOUTH!!!!

  • SInoc Ythth

a "real deal Ohio rocker (me)"

    Huh.

Daydream Nation is a record I go back to time and time again. Nostalia is BOTOX!

    This is REAL friends

    Arctic Monkeys get Fucked

  • im with you dude, i like em.

  • I love this song so much I'd have it played at my funeral BUT, is it just me or is it pretty ordinary live? Saw them in 1992 and 2004 and they still can't play it very well!

  • hey, im sorry, was wondering whether u could help me, im doing a project on this song but i dont no anything about Sonic Youth/this song.... do u no where i can download this song and is Sonic Youth Rock and Roll or any other information about this song? I would very much appreciated if u could help me out thanx

  • Short answer: Try Itunes. SY grew out of hardcore punk into alternative noise/indie punk/art rock from 1981. This song is reputedly fantasy about J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr being in charge - see wikipedia. Also, book about album pub'd by 33/1/3 - me not read it. And good luck to you!

  • thank you so so much (O.O)

  • you're a nice person, i'm so pleased to see someone give an honest answer and not just some pretentious-holier-than-thou-indie-rock-

asshole-bullshit, i despise internet culture and all the ease it takes for a neurotic, insecure coward to shit all over someone they'll never know or have to meet. a lot of people would have read that comment and said "if you don't know sonic youth, you're a dumbass that needs to die" or something equally polite,

  • Thanks, I try my best. I belong to no cliques. Totally agree with your comment. I responded to someone recently (who was saying really nasty shit to everybody that commented on a video) and said "It's easy to talk tough online" and all the dick could come back with was "Hmmm". Also I grew up with grunge in the UK and the whole "I'm so alternative (but unfortunately I'm just like everyone else who is "so alternative")" scene alienated me from the start. Just happy to be me - a cynical old git!

  • I think you're speaking of the conforming non-conformists. I really loved the South Park where they ridicule the goth crowd for this exact thing.

  • Spot on - never saw much of South Park, but that one sounds good! Psychologists tell us we vary in our need for affinity and social identity. As one UK comic put it, it's only when the aliens invade will we all pull together. Trouble is, I expect most of the aliens will be alright anyway...

  • dude, the aliens have already arrived...& I'm one of 'em!

  • `it's all relative.', as the old cliche goes. there is no absolute nonconformity (atleast none that we can perceive, for The Absolute may exist as reality-in-itself). all noncomformity is of a degree. when nonconformists of a certain type start to gravitate to one another they tend to conform to each other and therefore become more conformist.

  • often the tendency to conform to their new social group and the tendency to nonconform to their old social group are inversely proportional. perhaps God can be an absolute nonconformist (being that, presumably, He possesses the powers of The Absolute), but sadly our current theological knowledge is in a highly informal and approximate state. would someone please remedy this situation at their earliest convenience?

  • great stuff

  • I personally like the empty page the best... if you havent heard murray street, do so soon. Its not as good as daydream nation though. This is probably one of the better songs on the best album though.

  • mm i kinda liek washing machine more than murray street but radical adults is great dough
