did they turn out to be parrot cichlids? one of the theories about that particular hybridisation? --- calico
No, they didn't. I put an update on concerning them. It's called " Convict x Midas hybrid update #1 ". Some of the males show some bright turquoise and blue specks on their sides, but the females look like regular female convicts.
I then crossed a male and female of these and got a white/pink, black barred, and mottled varieties out of the same batch. They are all still quite small.
June 17th --- I have separated a female hybrid to it's own 10 gal. tank. When it gets a bit larger I will try to crossbreed it with the male Midas to get a 2nd generation of hybrids.
If the female is bigger than the male does it mean they wont breed because i have a female that is 2 inch and and a male that is 1 inch She is always chasing him around the tank. When i cut off the light at night i see her moving the gravel to form a pit. She always goes near it. But i dont see any eggs n there and + if she did lay eggs i didnt see the male come and fertilize them.
Also i have a friend who bought 2 convicts and they spawned in the bag on the way home.
Do you plan to sell the offspring? I might be interested. Thanks. --apt21x
Actually, I DID plan on selling them, but as they are growing, they seem to look like a regular black convict. I'll give them some more time and what I will probably do is breed one of those with the Midas and see what a second generation hybrid will look like. I expect that the results will be better.
Thanks for your reply eatdrywall. A long time ago, I purchased some pink convict crossed RD and ever since my last one died a few years ago, I have been wanting to find some like it again. I tried to breed a few in college, but my fish never bred. Email me when you have some available along with price. I will see if I have the space at the time. Thanks!
They were 5-6 inches max. All were round and thick. They all looked like a mini version of a huge full grown nucahl humped RD. They looked like convicts but larger. I bought the one that was white bodied/skinned with orange stripes/barred and a nuchal hump.
The fry are about 10 weeks old now and look pretty much like a black convict with perhaps a whiter belly region and a slight golden brown color instead of grey. Of course this is all subject to change since they are still only about 3/4 of an inch long. Not mature yet. I have separated the 17 remaining fry into three different tanks to try and speed their growth rate in not-so-crowded conditions.
ahh yea i saw that vid...so youre midas spawned with a female how big...my red devil cant live with anything without some thing dieing so hes by him self in my room and he loves mealworms lol
i had some covict x firemouth that i got from one of my lfs.there not as dark as convicts and they have a lil red on their bellys and they have a long face like a fire mouth

jrthao916 >>> I too am eager to see what they will look like. I will try to put another video on in awhile of them, once they get some size to them. I didn't record the date of spawning, but I believe they are about 1.5 to 2 months old now. Still quite small and they are in a 10 gal. tank.

any uodates?
oiohjoi 3 years ago
I had one separated female that spawned with a common barred convict, but she ate the fry after a week. Then she laid another batch and ate the eggs.
I have at least determined that the females can reproduce. I am currently waiting for the next batch of eggs.
I'm trying :
Hybrid male and female
Hybrid female and midas
Hybrid female and pink male
I will post updates on results.

so the parents will protect their fry or do they eat them? or does it depend of their species?

Most Cichlids will protect their fry.

they were most likely already pregnant and the stress caused them to spawn
