Really nice (just heard it for the first time). Am middle-aged and have seen and heard many bands, including these guys who are, for me, the best (in all their combinations and line-ups) This one still makes me eyes wet.
...nice version! though i miss the brilliant arpeggios from keyboardist Banks, and Collins' percussion (the 32nd note groove) that is spinning deep in the original mix...that original recording is sublime. thanks uploader.
This is a rerecording of a song from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The original band got back together to record it for a Greatest Hits collection in 1999. It features Peter Gabriel's vocal and Steve Hackett on lead guitar, as well as Banks/Collins/Rutherford.

I want this song to be played at my funeral. It is Genesis´ most beautiful song. I love the fact that both Peter and Steve contributed to the 1999 version.

i prefer the original one this one is more commercial more phil collins style i thing genesis died in the moment gabriel left you cant tell me no! its the truth, i mean they should have changed their name
At tha beginning it's Peter Gabriel, and Steve Hackett guitar soloing with its classical style, and after minute 2:00 Phil Collins appear backing Pete's vocals up ... Nice, but too commercial ...
Actually it is Phil & Peter both singing this, Ray Wilson declined to participate cause he wanted nothing to do with this. This song was made for the Turn it on again greatest hit CD, wonderful song as Phil said this song has alot of meaning to the band, which is why they chose this to close out the last tour
This is a fabulous version - especially as it has the full intro that is missed out on so many versions. Gives me goosebumps - my favourite Genesis track ever - in fact my favourite song - EVER !!!

Way over-produced. The original version from the Lamb is 100 times better in my opinion. Plus, they left out the final verse, which is probably my favorite. It sounded way cooler with Tony Banks using the hand overlapping technique for a real fast keyboard sound.
I have to disagree with it being over-produced. This version shows how much they've matured as musicians. They were able to re-create a classic with a new twist, perhaps as a thank you for the fans for sticknig with them throughout the years. This one has its charm. I also think the video is pretty decent, showin a retrospective, plus, I heard that the LAst Verse was actually sung by Ray Wilson, but the band decided to leave it out on the final version. ....go figure!
That's fine. I just have different tastes. I don't hate this version its actually not bad at all but i just prefer the original. And i feel like its over-produced because I'm just a Gabriel-era Genesis fan and this is far different from how they would do it, hence why i like the original one with the fast keyboards. That's too bad about the last verse, it really shows off Gabriel's strong vocals. I think this is one of Pete's best songs for showing off his voice, definitely one of my favorites
It's such a sweet dedication to the careers of these great musicians. I'm grateful they had both Phil and Peter singing all the right notes.... brilliant.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So many critics.
This is an amazing version that only Peter Gabriel can do justice to!
Peter Gabriel was the driving force Behind this band.
They turned into a lame AM "pop" band after he left. Peter went on to a brilliant career that all but overshadowed the remaining members of Genesis. Best move Peter could have ever made.
I heard that Phil and the others, w/o Peter wrote the lyrics to "The lamb" and Peter, who was having his 1st child just wrote the music. They weren't together on it, geographically. Peter said he wanted to quit because he was the 1st w/ wife and a child, and the others were into tours and had no idea what it was like having a child.
We got to get in to get out ... we have to get into our souls, find the real meaning of life to be able to get out renewed ... everything in life in a paradox ... you have to know evil to be good ... to know poverty to be rich ... That's why PG said it was an spiritual journey when he talked about the LLDOBroadway ...
As a kid I loved genesis...particularly lambs. i wound up many years later working at Ground Zero cleaning up for 4 months and this particular version saved my mind. Many nights after coming out of the pit, this was my salvation...so whatever...Gabriel...Collins...who cares...this song is is heaven sent and helped me & my mates thru some tough times!
Genesis wanted to do a movie of "The Lamb", but they couldn't scrape up the lousy 5 million it would have taken to do it. I'm sure with Gabriel's unparalleled sense of visual imagery it would have been incredibly beautiful, that is, of course, if they didn't fuck up the music like The Who when they re-recorded "Tommy", etc., etc...
Fact is, it is beneath Gabriel to come and entertain those of us who simply weren't old enough to have seen this group as a five piece. The same applies for Hackett. I find the whole thing very disappointing. I mean, at least Collins, Banks, and Rutherford showed up for the gig.
Fact is, this and other Gabriel era Genesis should be left alone! This is a terrible remix! It takes away from the "feel" of the Lamb in its original content! All of the early Gabriel era Genesis should be left alone.
Get a turntable and dust off the grooves...take a little trip back!
Peters recent journeys are worth investigating if you want to travel ahead some?
Sorry, some of us are just too close to this music!
Yup, I completely agree! I only listened to this for the first time right now, and the same thing went through my head, you shouldn't tamper with a classic. There's a cheesy technofunk thing underneath instead of the original groove, and I cringed when I heard Phil take over with his abnoxious tendancy of changing the original vocal melody. I hated it when I heard him sing "Supper's Ready" after Gabriel left, but there was no excuse this time, because Peter was available. Anyway...
clearly genesis disintegrated with the loss of each original member until Phil went out onnhis own. He was a fine drummer and back-up vocalist, but the song writing skills of Hackett and Gabriel were the heart of the band.
genesis' overall quality definitely declined with each member's departure, but you should remember that collins is credited as a co-writer on all the early (good) genesis stuff too. peter gabriel contributed less and less to the band from the early 70's until his departure; the tony banks, hackett, rutherford, collins quartet is where the genius of genesis really shined.
This proves what a joke later era Genesis realy was. While Genesis in the 70's was art of the higher dimension, Genesis with Collins more and more only was a sad and bad joke.
It only takes a 30 year old song with new arr. and Peter back on the vocals to beat everything the band without him and Steve Hackett ever made.
This is the One song that truly sounds 70ies Genesis at there debut with deep rooted emotions everywhere they played, and if Peter Gabriel left only one song to represent his contribution to Genesis this would be the song... 70ies concert with no sitting ditribution, first one in could sit in front of the stage others took seats where they saw fit and others were always moving around... the funny ones..
I'm not sure if this would be the best song to represent Gabriel, because, as the remaining members have said frequently in interviews (sour grapes?), Gabriel apparently didn't contribute music or lyrics to this song or "The Light Dies Down...", which I must admit are both GORGEOUS songs...
Peter Gabriel wrote the lyrics + concept for 99% of The Lamb, but pretty much nothing musically. According to the band, he did write the chorus/melody for Carpet Crawlers. And his 1970's self would be utterly appalled at this "updated" rendition of a classic masterpiece. I had to mute the video to write this...it's that bad.
I always thought that the rest of the band maintained that this song was done independently from Gabriel, although I suspected alot of his influence trickled in through osmosis; I mean, it was his concept, and his vocal interpretation was significantly different than Phil's subsequent massacre. And I think the part of "Supper's Ready" called "Willow Farm" better exemplifies Gabriel's contribution, since he's revealed in the past he wrote that section by himself,(and it's fucking incredible!).
I went to see tribute act The Musical Box last night (really good, too) and when they sang Crawlers there was a film playing which featured an assortment of freaks and people in costumes, uniforms etc, er, "crawling" along a corridor with red curtains. It was quite disturbing and appropriate for the music. I assume it dated from the original Lamb Lies Down era - is anyone familiar with it?
The main reason for the buying the greatest hits cd in 99 was to hear this rerecorded version of this wonderful Lamb song. Thanks guys. Now how about sorting out the world tour of Lamb in 2010?
Yes Steve does play on this. They didnt get together to record this my understanding is each member did their part individually on their own time and then it was all mixed together.
i see the people chained, crawling on their hands and knees and think, "when will we evolve to a higher awareness?" it seems like such a long and slow process
Not bad but obviously prefer the original version. Love both Phil and Peter but Genesis gradually lost thier way as Phils soppy love ballads increased in number with each new album. The greatest Prog Rock Band eva even better than Yes apart from the close to the edge album which was perfection

lmfao @ stickler
The porcelain mannequin with shattered skin fears attack.
The eager pack lift up their pitchers - they carry all they lack.

And the tickler takes his stickleback.
The carpet crawlers heed their callers:

It's such a sweet dedication to the careers of these great musicians. I'm grateful they had both Phil and Peter singing all the right notes.... brilliant.

I didn't like this video.
This song is amazing! Hypnotic.
There are too many images and I prefer the way it's done on the album.
I wish I could listen to it at YouTube.
Thanks

So many critics.
This is an amazing version that only Peter Gabriel can do justice to!
Peter Gabriel was the driving force Behind this band.
They turned into a lame AM "pop" band after he left. Peter went on to a brilliant career that all but overshadowed the remaining members of Genesis. Best move Peter could have ever made.

yea right, "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering" were all over the am charts in my town.

Many nights after coming out of the pit, this was my salvation...so whatever...Gabriel...Collins...who cares...this song is is heaven sent and helped me & my mates thru some tough times!
eddiethe111 3 years ago 2
Genesis wanted to do a movie of "The Lamb", but they couldn't scrape up the lousy 5 million it would have taken to do it. I'm sure with Gabriel's unparalleled sense of visual imagery it would have been incredibly beautiful, that is, of course, if they didn't fuck up the music like The Who when they re-recorded "Tommy", etc., etc...
cathoderoy 3 years ago
Fact is, it is beneath Gabriel to come and entertain those of us who simply weren't old enough to have seen this group as a five piece. The same applies for Hackett. I find the whole thing very disappointing. I mean, at least Collins, Banks, and Rutherford showed up for the gig.
ionia23 3 years ago
Fact is, this and other Gabriel era Genesis should be left alone! This is a terrible remix! It takes away from the "feel" of the Lamb in its original content! All of the early Gabriel era Genesis should be left alone.
Get a turntable and dust off the grooves...take a little trip back!
Peters recent journeys are worth investigating if you want to travel ahead some?
Sorry, some of us are just too close to this music!
Thanks!

Anyway...
cathoderoy 3 years ago
clearly genesis disintegrated with the loss of each original member until Phil went out onnhis own. He was a fine drummer and back-up vocalist, but the song writing skills of Hackett and Gabriel were the heart of the band.
SkipVV 3 years ago
genesis' overall quality definitely declined with each member's departure, but you should remember that collins is credited as a co-writer on all the early (good) genesis stuff too. peter gabriel contributed less and less to the band from the early 70's until his departure; the tony banks, hackett, rutherford, collins quartet is where the genius of genesis really shined.

If you can't deal with another persons opinions without feraking out, don't read them.
Learn to deal with it, get over it and and move on, if you can't, keep your problems and issues to yourself.

why don't you first try to stop selling your own opinion as fact? obviosly a lot of people liked genesis with collins, too, so once more:
Get over it!

Thanks
maxipader 3 years ago
I'm not sure if this would be the best song to represent Gabriel, because, as the remaining members have said frequently in interviews (sour grapes?), Gabriel apparently didn't contribute music or lyrics to this song or "The Light Dies Down...", which I must admit are both GORGEOUS songs...
cathoderoy 3 years ago
Peter Gabriel wrote the lyrics + concept for 99% of The Lamb, but pretty much nothing musically. According to the band, he did write the chorus/melody for Carpet Crawlers. And his 1970's self would be utterly appalled at this "updated" rendition of a classic masterpiece. I had to mute the video to write this...it's that bad.
MicoTX 3 years ago
I always thought that the rest of the band maintained that this song was done independently from Gabriel, although I suspected alot of his influence trickled in through osmosis; I mean, it was his concept, and his vocal interpretation was significantly different than Phil's subsequent massacre. And I think the part of "Supper's Ready" called "Willow Farm" better exemplifies Gabriel's contribution, since he's revealed in the past he wrote that section by himself,(and it's fucking incredible!).

"Feel your body melt,
Mum to mud to mad to Dad,
Dad diddly office, Dad diddly office,
You're all full of ball
Dad to dam to dum to Mum,
Mum diddly washing, Mum diddly washing,
You're all full of ball
Let me hear your lies,
We're leaving it up to the eyes...
MAMA I WANT YOU NOW!!"

As much as I like it, I can't help thinking it can't touch Gabriels haunting vocal from the Lamb.

I never want Gabriel to go back to Genesis.
He is brilliant on his own.
I have seen the lamb, Selling Enlgnad and so on and i want Gabriel to stay on his own.
He has by his own admission no intent to ever reunite and i believe him.
I used to like collins now i think he is a little punk.

Yes Steve does play on this. They didnt get together to record this my understanding is each member did their part individually on their own time and then it was all mixed together.
