He never uses three fingers. Always two. He said that himself and if you concentrate on his playing, you can see it as well. The middle finger and the ring finger always move in an accordance, that's why it seems like he is using the third also. But the fingers that are doing the work are the middle and the index.
@jeremylovesmusic1 Same here. The first time I heard number of the beast I couldnt get over how powerful the bass line was and I was deadset on getting a bass after that and I did ;)
Actually, this can be played with one finger. You just trill back and forth, hitting the string in both directions. In fact, you can play even faster than this.
@Dennis19901 I wasn't saying Steve plays it like that. He uses two fingers in the traditional plucking technique. I was just pointing out an alternate way to play fast lines. And your fingernail doesn't hit the string if you play at the right angle. It takes practice, but it can be done and can be very fast and quite powerful. There are no rules, whatever works for you personally is the way to play it.
@fearedlegend Denial? about what? Steve and Iron maiden are great, no doubt....at metal. They're obviously your favorite, but the best? Everyone is different man, branch out. Listen to other players and styles, it'll make you a better well-rounded player, Don't limit yourself to just metal. You'd be surprised to know what Steve himself listens to. There are many techniques to playing bass.
I'm not buying that it's Steve. He plays with force, vigor, and finess. No way something this sloppy is the the master recording. It sounds like someone practicing unplugged in the back of a church, trying not to be heard. Watch any live video, he plucks the hell out of each note and uses all 4 fingers.
@AndrewScorres your an idiot. steve harris has NEVER used more than 2 fingers. that IS steve. that "Sloppy" sound is his extra heavy bass strings hitting the fret board because his technique requires extreme down strumming
To me almost sounds like he's using a pick, but I guess I'm wrong... Maybe some stainless steel strings? Idk but can you "experts" tell me what kind of strings he's using? I understand he may be using to fingers but I get the same result with three.
Well you gotta consider that he's pretty much self-taught, and most of the time they don't really develop a clean technique. And when you gotta consider the speed he's playing at too!
@Metalhead12828 Have you ever seen them live, standing in front of the stage when harris comes, taking a step up on the monitors and start pointing with the bass on YOU? I don't think so...I've seen it myself.
@Metalhead12828 I "know" you from your comments which are contradictory: first you say that NO ONE can play RTTH that fast with just 2 fingers (no one = including Steve Harris), but then you add that YOU can play it!? :S
@Metalhead12828 I didn't say that you haven't seen them live...But one thing i know for sure is that you haven't seen what I've seen that I said in the comment above.
