  • Nice shot GUS, Center mass! First that guy was lacking lead in his blood - Now he's lacking blood.

  • I love this movie, but why didn't Gus just shoot them from that range a long time ago?

  • Great scene but isn't it technically wrong... I've never fired a gun in my life but I thought bullets travel faster than sound so you'd see the bullet hit something before you'd hear the shot..... Still you have to allow some artistic licence...Great scene

  • Thanks @classicnorthwest learn something new everyday :-)

  • @MickeyMcGoo not all bullets.

  • well now that was antagonising

  • I hate to be one of those You Tube "experts" but that shot seems highly implausible. I loved this scene when I was a kid. However, the Henry Yellow boy was not as powerful as Hollywood would make us believe. It shot a .44 henry cartridge which was a rimfire 200GN. bullet. Which is basically a medium pistol load by today's standards. It's muzzle velocity was not much better than 1,200 fps. Seeing that it's a long-range shot, the low velocity projectile would have a very high angle of trajectory.

  • @mindeloman 1'200fps is pretty fast, fast enough for the 200-300 yard shot this was.

  • @Treblaine uh, no. 1200 is about the velocity of a 45acp. A .30-06 is 2800 fps.

  • @mindeloman Nope, 1200fps is about 50% faster than a .45ACP (typical ~800f/s).

.30-06 is capable of incredible long range shots with a relatively flat trajectory out to 1200yards, while this shot seems to be within ear shot (close shots of Duvall you can still faintly hear the taunting clucks) which can be only about 200 yards, perfectly capable of hitting a 6 foot tall target (and it's height which is the major variable) with a rifle of that type. And it's only one lucky shot.

  • @Treblaine - yup, in those days, a gut-shot meant a slow and agonising death. As we see later on in the series...

    tac

  • Robert duvall is best actor ever

  • like a fucking boss.

  • Fuckiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnggggggg!!!!!

  • Ha, ha, ha! Shows what happens when you court trouble.

  • why didin't he just use the cross hair to being with, what it wasn't serious enough hiding behind a dead horse being shot at by a sniper lol

  • @Nordfallen - He was faking it to draw out the bad guys I'd guess. It worked. :-)

  • @rockheimr I thought he was trying to find their range, like naval vessels did at the Battle of Jutland.

  • @mbabist01 - Ah, possibly. I took it to be wily old Gus, fooling them into relaxing and revealing themselves by making them think he couldn't hit them at that range. You may be right though. Great scene either way, Gus being chased, then using his horse as cover, reminded me of those great old western paintings which showed similar scenes.

  • @rockheimr You are right, it could well be, although it would seem like a waste of ammo.

It is a great scene, something right out of a Frederick Remington painting.

  • this is gay

  • Never fogot this scene..obsessed with its great originality and dialogue."He's just

    wastin his bullits."

  • thats on a henry rifle right. i still want one.

  • @frezdead1 Yep, no wooden front piece so not a Winchester. Apparently the Henry barrel gets hot to hold after shooting for a while, I'd guess in real life people would wear gloves to use it, or perhaps wrap the barrel with a rag, to protect their left hand from the heat(?).

  • Die slow, POS.

  • fuck around and get shot...

  • bellissimo!

  • I liked doin that to the taliban,myself...

  • @mullyscans Thanks for your service!

  • @mullyscans Likely story.

  • @mullyscans yeah, taliban, right... whatever makes you sleep better

  • @TheCoreyCaffeine hey! asshole! show a little respect to someone whose been fighting for your right to sit on your ass watchin youtube all day

  • @kuipers23 No one should ever enjoy killing like his comment implied. I stand by my case you unpatriotic bastard.

  • @TheCoreyCaffeine you implied it as if he were killing innocent civillians

  • @kuipers23 and I intended as such. Many (a majority) of casualties are civilians. However what irked me the most is that he said he enjoyed it.

  • @TheCoreyCaffeine well he has a right to enjoy it as the taliban were a goverment that defended al qaeda. a terrorist group that blew up three buildings and killed thousands of innocent civillians that were attempting to go about there day. He enjoys killing terrorists. not civillians. in his comment he wrote taliban, not civillians

  • @kuipers23 the fact that he enjoys killing is fact enough, and as is usual with the military they've covered up many civilian deaths by claiming that they were "taliban"

  • @TheCoreyCaffeine and your proof is...

  • funny I just realized Duvalls first shot didn't have any thing in the chamber. If you lever the action like duvall you will get nailed in the face by brass, been there done that. my henry from the shoulder tends to eject brass over my head if you lever it fast, but if lever it in a medium pace it tends to eject brass into your face! After this movie i had to get a henry!

  • @41maglover how much did it cost and what caliber. iv'e been wanting one myself.

  • @frezdead1 mine is a 45 colt and for the cost i got exremely lucky at 900 new! I would sell all of my other rifles but never the cimarron1860 henry. loading can be dangerous! you can't drop bullets down the tube cause it might set off the primers same with bring the tab back down on the bullets you cant have it slip and hit em. I have had it slip with snap caps when first learning but practiced till i stopped slipping then graduated to live rounds

  • if you have never seen the film read the book first so much better altho the film is great

  • Without a doubt my favorite scene of the series.

  • Bunch of dumb bad guys. They all sat out in front in a group. If they had spread out and surrounded Gus, they would have got him for sure.

  • Classic scene from a now classic western. Watch it if you have never seen it.

  • Best Western ever made.

  • I loved Duvall as "Gus" I think he did a great job, especially scenes like this. outnumbered and out gunned he goes "old-school" and uses the muscle between his ears to his his mark, belly shot..........nice.

  • What fucking assholes dislike this video? Liberal scumbags?

  • @WesOrion I'm liberal and I loved 'Lonesome Dove'

  • @WesOrion Son, it depends what you mean by liberals. I like liberal gun laws, liberal sex, and a liberal amount of hot dogs and fries - and folks with liberal ideas who are not stuck on some dogma given to them by the Pope or some scumbag Babble thumper.

  • @mujaku He's refering to "liberal" in the political sense, more than likely. I don't think that even the "loosest" liberal would argue against self-defense. For fucks's sake, a core element of being human is self-preservation. It's just instinctual. Though, I have heard of bullied children being told not to fight back by the school district...so who knows. And yes, religion serves to "answer" the unknowable and control the masses.

  • very good

  • Best movie ever made..every actor/actress was great...love it..

  • Comment removed

  • i don't understand why he quit shooting, he could have put some lead in two or three of em.

  • Awsome stuff !!

The complete series is totally awsome !!

  • LOL-interesting but not realistic. That Henry wouldnt shoot accurately that far. And that dude with the buffalo rifle is resting the barrel on the shooting rest....a sure way to throw the shot off. Any serious rifleman knows to rest the forend on the shooting rest.

  • @Pennshitz

The chap with the Sharps isn't a good rifleman -- that's the point. Notice how he lifts his head off the stock immediately after he presses the trigger rather than following through as a most good riflemen do. He probably took that fancy firearm off someone he killed. As for the accuracy of Gus' Henry well... the range is indeterminate, and Gus only has two guns. There's an old saying to beware the man with only one gun as he probably knows how to use it.

  • @lordsummerisle87

I agree with all you said here. Beware the man with only one gun,he probably knows how to use it....but Gus has two guns. Haha!

Hey it was just a movie.

  • This was a made for t.v. movie. I still cannot believe to this day that duvall did not win an emmy for this part. It went to james woods for portraying some recovering alcoholic. Jessus. The whole frickin movie was awesome, but Duvall stole the show. Thank you very much.

  • i like dovalls cheeky "i got you now" smile

  • I' m a pretty good weapon master myself, but i cannot for the life of me figure out, how did gus get the henry rifle to reach that far, when he tried before he shot short, i know he raises the sights but how does that make the range higher for the rifel? the other guy has a sharps rifle with a long scope, the sharps rifles can reach that far, i did not know a henry could as well- please explain.

  • @MAnnaconduit1

You are correct , the sharps 1874 in .52 had an effective range of 500 yds and maximum of 100 yards while the henry 1860 in .44 was effective out to 100 with a max of 150-200 yards. However from looking at the video; specifically at :44, it looks like they were withing the effective range and by using the 1000yd ladder sights he was able to adjust the weapon for the long range shot.

  • @ebzona

    thank you

  • @ebzona .52 ??? They had .50 calibers I know but wich are you refering to ?

  • @Pennshitz The Sharps 1874 fired a 52-caliber 475-grain projectile with 50-grain (3.2 g) cartridge which was later converted to .45-70 Government in 1873. it was made most famous in the movie Quigley Down Under.

  • @MAnnaconduit1

I think the guy on the Sharps just sucks, and Gus just decided to take his time on that last shot.

  • @MAnnaconduit1 to me....it looks like gus purposly shot "short" as a way to goad the bad guys into a sense of false security......which caused the one guy to do the chicken dance as a mockery at Gus's shooting ability and range.......it worked

  • i feel really bad for that horse

  • One of the best t.v. mini series and one of the best parts of the movie. Robert Duvall (Gus) acting in this part is just great. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones stole this movie both were great.

  • I'm reading the book right now. it's so good I had to be told about 5 times to put it down at work today because we're not supposed to read books at the cash register! lol my manager was like, wtf?

  • I'm reading the book right now. it's so good I had to be told about 5 times to put it down at work today because we're not supposed to read books at the cash register! lol my manager was like, wtf?

  • great shot, few inches lower much better

  • Miniseries good. Book great.

  • what movie is this?

  • @tmccarthysjc Lonesome Dove. Kinda old. I think it was a series. Now there are other parts like Comanche Moon and The Streets of Laredo.

But the original, Lonesome Dove, was the best.

  • I am 13, and this is my favorite movie by a landslide.

  • He probably gutshot him so the others had to care for him.It would take a while to die, being gutshot.

  • This is an outstanding series !!

    Brilliant !

  • I can't remember the rest of the miniseries but this moment always sticks in my memory.

  • I love the grin on his face as he gets ready to take the shot.

  • Maybe he needs a better target!

  • Gut shop....that's gonna hurt.

  • This movie, by all rights is one of my absoulute FAVORITES!!!!!

  • 1:28 powned xD

  • I know it's just a movie but that is a long shot to make with a 45

Long Colt or 44/40.But great movie thanks.

  • @616ist Because was is a Henry, it was neither a .45 Colt or the .44/40. It would be in the .44 rimfire, historically.

  • @616ist It certainly is not. Read any box of .22LR and it'll warn against shooting in the air because it has a maximum overall range of 2.5 miles. The round that the henry shoots certainly isn't as powerful as .44-40, but with enough elevation you can shoot many hundreds of yards with these types of rounds.

You have to remember back in the black powder era, 1500fps was considered SCREAMING velocity. So high trajectories were a thing that one just dealt with, hence the ladder sights.

  • That dude got OWNED!

  • If you've ever done any research on the Texas Rangers of the 1800's, you'll know that they were all a bunch of 'cusses"......Duvall's performance was definitly right on target.

  • he's just wastin his bullets shootin at nick melkonian 's fat ass.

  • there are people who think their badass. but robert duvall just kicks ass at ever thing he has ever done

  • MELKONIANS MAKE GOOD OL TARGETS , OR AT LEAST THEY NOSES DO.

  • yeah maybe he just needs a big ol fat melkonian to shoot at,

  • whats this movie called ?

  • @Nick3889 LOnesome Dove is the title- ya silly galoot.

  • @Nick3889 YOUV'E NEVER SEEN LONESOME DOVE. PART 1 THRU 4 OH YOUR IN FOR A TREAT, MY FREIND.

  • highly unlikely that 44 henry rimfire could be that accurate or do much damage at that range but still a good scene

  • You don't mess with Gus!

  • thats enough THAT IS ENOUGH! badass just got described in 5 words

  • Gus was such a rascally, lovable character in this movie. Rascally, yes, but one serious lawman when the chips were down. When I saw him raising the caliper sight I knew chicken man was in trouble. A shot like that would take a great deal of practice but, when you are the law, that is your job and old Gus did it well.

Every so often I have to watch that movie again. My DVD player has a round table storage and that is the #1 movie in the westerns category. The scenery, the music, actors, great.

  • Robert. Duvall. Owns.

  • i just love hearing okies talk without their teeth in. HE'S JUST WASSIN HE'S BULLESSS . CAUSE I GOTS NO TEETHS IN.

  • faut toujours se mefier...

  • Best part. "Here comes another...."

  • The musical score in westerns is extremely important, one of the things you notice in a John Wayne movie, even though Audie Murphy was my hero, Tomstone was entertaining, but Wyatt Earp ( Kevin Costner) was far better, more factual and believable, if you haven't seen The Long Riders, it is another extremely well done western.

  • I have been watching westerns at the theatre's and on TV since 1960, and this is thee best western ever made, it is my favorite movie of all not just westerns. This character Gus, is also Mr. Duvals favorite character he ever played. { well that's what I read anyways}.

  • .45/70 I assume?

  • This is a good film but Tombstone is the best of them all.

  • And the moral is......................never act foolishly when dealing with August McCrea! There's no wonder Rober Duvall said this is the best part he's ever played in a movie............and he's played in a slew of them.

  • what kind of pistol did gus have?

  • @bubba3667 It's a Colt Walker ball and cap revolver, designed to Texas Ranger specification. Very long cylinder, it could take a charge of up to 60 grains of black powder. Until the development of the .44 mag, it was the most powerful hand gun.

  • @24502430 This is my favorite scene. My dad used to say "It's all about windage and elevation." I have no idea what that means. But, appparently it has a lot to do with this scene. Cowboys. Lord. And his hat! It is the best hat ever! Trish

  • @trishistory YOUR DAD KNOWS HIS SHIT BELIEVE ME.

  • In the book, July Johnson hits that guy with a lucky shot while passing by. But my point still stands- if Blue Duck is headed away from him, you better rethink your arrogant attitude.

  • @TheGoldcountry is the book better than the movie? I have been meaning to read it once I get some more free time. I know generally they are. Commanche Moon was a really good book while the movie itself was average.

  • What I love about this scene is that (if you're familiar with the story) Blue Duck sends these Comancheros after Gus. These idiots should realize that if Blue Duck doesn't really want to mess with Gus if he doesn't need to, they should be concerned.

  • IMHO, the single greatest performance ever recorded. Robert Duvall as Gus McCall. Makes me wake up every day wanting to do my job as well as he does his. Read the book and tell me you don't see Robert Duvall. I have read the book twice and seen the miniseries three times. They both still amaze me. I figure at least two more times each before I am done.

  • robert duvall=bad ass best acting job ive ever seen ..........its not dyin im talkin about its livin best qoute from a movie ever

  • Continuing on- The Llano Estacado was about 250 miles west of that route. Also the Llano was vast, treeless, flat, with almost no landmarks for navigation, very little water & no settlements. Only Indians & highly experienced whites could venture into it & survive. The 4 would have quickly become lost & died of thirst. Obviously McMurtry wanted to write a scenario where Gus could meet them, but it was an absurd scenario. Regardless, I think the film is one of the greatest westerns.
  • As the book & film say, Gus enters the Llano Estacado (present day Texas Panhandle), fights with the whites/Kiowa then crosses paths there with July, Joe, Roscoe & Janey. It is totally implausible that Gus would meet the 4 there. Leaving northeast Texas for Ogallala, Nebraska, in the real world the 4 would have gone through central Indian Territory, central Kansas, southwest Nebraska, following a route near settlements so they could find their way, water & food. Comment continues-
  • that is enough, dammit, time to put one down the pike,

  • Lonesome dove was origanally meant for John Wayne, James Stewart and Henry Fonda but John Ford advised John Wayne not to do it so the movie was never made

  • I love that look on Duvalls face at the very end.

  • @mmabagain

    Yep. Distinct self satisfaction.

  • look what that sonofabitch done to me ......monkey

  • Best western ever made!

I watched it for the first time when I was a teen and loved it ever since. I was born 150 years too late.

All of the cast was awesome. I re watch it about once a year. The musical score was also brilliant.

My favorite scene was when Gus talks Pea Eye into chasing buffalo and gets frustrated when he has to explain why! LOL

This movie would make any young boy want to be a cowboy. Thank you Robert and Tommy Lee.

  • @MrYoubrian you say you were born 150 years too late--but i sometimes wonder what is more scary--living on a prairie with outlaws and indians--or living in a suburb with crackheads and rapists. what does everyone think?

  • @1pupblacky Living among outlaws and Indians would have been easier!

Mainly because most tribes were very friendly and curious. They had a great sense of community and respect for the earth. i would like to think We would have had alot in common.

As for the outlaws? Well people are alot more toned down in their drama when everyone is armed! It is hard to find a tough boos when everyone comes to work armed! It is just sad that the whites are the only ones that wrote the Indians history.

  • @MrYoubrian i agree.

  • that was a sharp 45-70 they were suppose to be shooting it could reach him.

  • hey guess wat, poned!!!!!!!

  • Best TV miniseries ever! Great novel as well. What I love about it is that R. Duvall seems to be having a lot of fun in the role of Gus. I don't think that he has ever surpassed this role in his long acting career.

  • i agree....superb and how it must have been in those days

  • it was actually only 1876 that this film was set in as the boys were talking about custers defeat at the little big horn in the novel anyway, this was long ago in terms of american history yet relatively recent in terms of irish history.

  • OWED !!!! HE USED A GOOD GUN TOO .

  • The shot by Gus was based upon a shot made at Adobe Wells by buffalo hunter Billy Dixon. Dixon's shot from a 50 calibre rifle hit an indian on his horse at a distance of 9/10ths of a mile.

  • LOL...."gut shot".....thats the end of him

  • caveboy lol, xD

  • i've never seen a native american with a mustache

  • thats no native american. thats a buffalo hunter.

  • i think hes supposed to be a mexican

  • hes a half breed also mexican

  • Woops that was a henry not a yellowboy!

  • The better long range sharps buffalo rifle versus an 1866 winchester yellowboy. Long distance shooting would favor the sharps but the experienced Texas Ranger prevails!

  • best tv western serial ever made! more better than much westernmovie, released for cinema.

  • Later the fat man scalp his top for dieing anyway ,great buddy system.

  • haha i like the expression of gus on 1:37

  • Let this be a lesson...always...ALWAYS! make sure you're out of earshot when your mouthing off. Baring that...always...ALWAYS! make sure your at least out of Rifle Range :)

  • what a great character for robert duvall, gus was the GREATEST TEXAS RANGER!!

  • @marym499 any western character that duvall plays is great, he's in my hall of fame of westerns.

  • lol...dumbass asked for that.

  • Perfect gut shot for the mouthy bastard . Good shot Agustus!

  • gus was great

  • don't mess with Gus or your looking for trouble.

  • Is this from Valdez is coming?

  • IT'S a Henry actually

  • serves the bastard right for being smug!

  • gotta love gus. lol. never underestimate your opponent. rule #1. lol absolutely one of the best. Into the West is right there with this in mini-series.

  • gus is super awesome

  • love that scene, one of my favorite

  • LOVE the fact they didn't make the guy fly off his feet when the slow 44 rimfire hit him. Very weak bullet, perfect scene. Love RD and this movie!

  • is this from a film ?

  • Where have you been for the last 20 years? The film is "Lonesome Dove" based on the book and quite possibly the best TV Mini Series ever.

  • ,,can't forget The Thorn Birds.

  • of course it is dummie
