  • Hey, how do you feel about the zeiss 1.4 vs canon 1.4

  • @amnbracey havent used the zeiss

  • @dipmvideos ok fair enough lol. now the only thing thats troubling me at this point is that i really want a 60d but i feel like i can get the look i want with a 550d!! I'm a fan of the 5D but its out of my price range.. I've seen so many videos of the 550d with the 50mm 1.8 and they look really good before and after editing. i haven't seen the same results with the 1.8 OR 1.4 with the 60d. this is blowing my mind because I'm prepared to get the 60d + tokina 11-16mm + 50mm 1.8/1.4 any input? lol

  • @amnbracey 550d and 60d will look pretty much the same

  • I'd hit it.

  • What camera is he using?

  • Hi there, it's the body on the 1.4 plastic? or is it all metal? Thanks, great comparison!!

  • @3p1cr1d3r plastic!

  • 1.4...Done...I'm buying it !....There are cross comparison videos on you tube of the 1.2 and the 1.4 in low light...You can hardly tell the difference.

  • Hi !

Thank you very very much for this comparison . . . Now I´ll definitely buy a 50mm Lens. ^^

Now the reason for me to buy it is for filming in the darkness or places with bad lightening(with Canon 600D). Is it then very important for me to have a 1,4 lens?

    sincerely

  • does the 1.8 AF on the t2i?

  • @lepermessiah01 yup!

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for the comparison, I'm trying to decide between these two lenses right now!

  • Thanks for the review, it was very helpful. I only miss the sample pictures.

  • thank you

  • glad i got the 1.8II !!!

  • plastic mount is bas for heavy lenses, this lens really dosnt need a metal mounth.

The real problem might be the noisy autofocus ;)

  • WOW MAN GREAT REVIEW!

I HAVE THE REBEL XS PROBABLY GETTING THE 35MM 2.0 OR THE 50MM 1.4

  • what lens were you using to record this video? in the beginning

  • @AreWeFamousNow 17-40 i think

  • Awesome! Thank you!

  • I know on my 1Ds-MarkIII, with the 1.8, you can see lines if you zoom all the way at no crop. So just thought I might let anyone know what has the Ds-III or 5D-II to get the bigger one.

  • Are those good for sport video recording?

  • Great video, very helpful.

  • Really interesting video.

I have a question: I'm about to buy a 50mm lens. I have £600 to spend but I also have a lot of other things I want to buy like a rode Videomic and a LCDVF and stuff. Is the 1.4 3x better than the 1.8? Will it last 3x longer before braking? What if the plastic mount strips off the 1.8? Is there any point buying the 1.8, have it break then having to buy the 1.4?

So many questions, I would be grateful if you replied. I have a 600D (cropped)if that helps. Thanks.

  • @DuckHouseProductions If you really take care of your stuff, and in this case the 50 1.8, you shouldn't have too much trouble with it at all. It does have a plastic mount but the lens is so light it doesn't matter that much. Just be careful when mounting it.

The only thing is the focusing is slower and clunkier, but apart from that, picture-quality-wise, no complaints whatsoever with this lens.

  • aweh you are soo cute ! :o

& very very helpful video !

  • Thanks for all the info on the lens comparisons. Have you done a review of the 50mm 1.2L vs the other two ? If so, would you say IQ is worth the extra money? just wanted to also say for a young person, I think your style of podcasting and delivery of information to be very nice, so cudos to you and please keep the videos coming.

  • Are the canon and nikon the same as far as lens in the 50mm?

  • @AF0093 The nikons are both newer, so they might be better than the canons.

  • @AF0093 photozone.de rates the Canon 50 1.4 better than any Nikon 50mm.

  • Hi, thanks for this video -- I appreciated your thoughts on the difference between the 1.8 and 1.4. I have been thinking about moving up to a better 50mm prime, and your comments -- especially about build quality -- were helpful.

One other question about this video that I don't think anyone else has asked: What does your shirt say (There is no Finish ______)? LOL

  • @curt503 there is no finish line :P

  • What cam u recoring?

  • @TUTIMIO123 5D mark II

  • i am thinking to buy 50m 1.8.... and ur video encourage me to buy it :)

  • nice video. very helpful

  • @jaypee024 you're very welcome! thanks for watching!

  • Is the sigma 30mm 1.4 any different? Because I was thinking of buying the 50mm 1.4 and the sigma 1.4

  • you didn't mention about so many things...

  • @SebastianKaczorowski like what?

  • @dipmvideos a lot of things e.g. motor type, difference in mount quality, blades, comparison of color, bokeh, flare, barrel distortion...and smoe more.. cmon you could create really valuable review

  • @SebastianKaczorowski really?... i'm a photographer not a gear head. what i said in this video is based on photos i've taken. if i saw heavy distortion on either of the lenses, i would have mentioned it. seeing as i dont notice any, i dont need to share it. i know some people dont like these kinds of review, but hey, you can go elsewhere for all the specs.

  • @dipmvideos man, don't take it personally, i'm here just by accident, but your approach is really bad. You are so mean. Calm down. On the other hand you're newbie and that explain a lot. Cheers!

  • @SebastianKaczorowski mean? i've never gotten that before lol. your points were very valid. i was just trying to let you know that that wasn't my style. and i'm not a newbie lol

  • @SebastianKaczorowski but feel free to think what you want. cheers to you, too

  • How does the 1.8 compare with the Canon 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS kit lens, seen to the image quality and focus speed?

  • just ordered this lens yesterday. I started photography with the 1.8 to really get a good idea with depth of field, then i just recently got the 24-70, and now the 1.4, i hear its a fantastic lens, but im not sure il be using it as much as my 24-70.. its a workhorse of a lens

  • 1,8 or 1,4 for filming music videos?? thanks

  • I just got the 1.4 last week, great lens. Still feels a bit weak, but it's a step up from the 1.8.

  • One of my friends just got a 50mm 1.2 and she let me try it out on my t3 and it is amazing! She showed me images that she took with it on her 60d and they are beyond AMAZING. I am deciding whether or not to buy the 1.8 and just save for the 1.4. It depends on me getting a job and my photography business working out( it's doing decent for barley starting a few weeks ago). Good video! Thanks.

  • Im going to get the canon 550d, but don't know what to choose 1.4 or 1.8, I will be mainly using it for short films, please help dipmyvideos, thanks - Sebastian

  • It's pronounced as Nee-Kon not Nay-kon. It's a japanese brand FFS. You might as well pronounce Canon as Kay-non <_<

  • @oneyedthing i know that, i say it that way in my other videos.

  • @dipmvideos

No b ggie. Nice vid btw

  • @oneyedthing thanks!

  • The f1.2 "L" lens is built more for professionals. It has a magnesium body and is weatherproofed, but yeah, it's over $1000

  • Good vid, again, which is why I subscribed.

I've been taking pictures now for 45+ years and IMHO the best way to learn about photography is to buy a SLR body and a 50mm lens. Composition skills improve massively when you only have your legs to use as a zoom. Half an hour ago I was using the Canon 50mm 1.8 to photograph orchids for a friend. I could have used any of my lenses but always fall back on the 50mm. It gives the best quality images bang for the buck.

    Keep up the good work.

  • @PioneerSea How come? what do you suggest?

  • Excelente! quiero este lente!

  • good review man...i have 50mm f/1.8 mk II and mk I...interested in the f/1.4 or the sigma version...

  • @magetv I would go for the Canon...The Sigma looks bigger and newer, but it has a LOT of problems. 95% chance you will have to send it bacl ALONG WITH YOUR BODY to get it recalibrated. I don't have any cam stores around so I would have to send it to Adorama's NY headquarters. I also don't trust my body in the hands of fedex workers 1000 miles across the country. go for the canon.

  • should i get EF 50mm f/1.4 USM or EF 85mm f/1.8 USM for my 60d plz reply asap thank u

  • @bijayranjana two completely different lenses. choose whichever focal length you like better.

  • first thank u for replying .... i am a first time user dslr camera and i am looking for portable and that takes awesome picture in any sitution ....sorrie for my bad english and one thing somebody say ef 50mm f/1.4 focus is not so great is that true O_O nice video subcribed ur all video :)

  • nerf gun..........................

  • nice video lil bro. i dont have a 5D but yeah...just go head and save to get the 1.4 i say.

  • Is your hair green?

  • im a beginner should i buy canon 50 mm f1.4

  • @rkrockstarmusic Buy the 1.8. For a beginner/ non-pro / hobbyist, go with this one. I just bought mine.

  • @rkrockstarmusic Buy the 1.8. For a beginner/ non-pro / hobbyist, go with this one. I just bought mine.

  • god why do u have all of this equipment when your like 13 please tell me, really i have to earn all my shit not get it from my parents

  • @10truman so you subbed just to bash my vids? again, i'm 20 and i do freelance graphic design. maybe try working instead of trolling.

  • @10truman haha nah, its because you hate the truth. i'm not mad or anything. its you who is wasting your time, not me.

  • @10truman and its cool that you're getting satisfaction out of getting likes on your comment. seems like the only thing youre good at.

  • @dipmvideos Haha, when I first saw your vids I didn't think much of your age and assumed about 15-16. Honestly it doesn't matter the age, if you spend enough time on something you can be a pro at it and give good advice. Although, when you said your Dad bought the 1.4 it does sound a little bit like your one of those kids who asks and gets whatever they want from their parents. Quick question, is the 50mm prime still worth it for a crop-sensor Canon dSLR? Thanks, Cam.

  • @CamBlogs i've already made a video on that. go look for it on my channel.

  • @dipmvideos damn i would never say you are 20 y/o...id say like 14 ahahha nhf

  • if im shooting video which is better 1.8 or 1.4???/

  • @BookingBradley i always like a shallower depth of field so i prefer having the option for 1.4, but its harder to focus with it at times.

  • Excellent review. Helped a lot with my choice. I like that you were very relaxed and casual. Have you seen the Canon ef 35 mm f 2? Noisier than heck and non-usm but a good value and gives a crop body close to a "normal" lens.

  • @controllerone i havent heard too much about that lens actually. thanks for the input, and thanks for watching!

  • so can i make a movie look professional with the 1.4 lens?

And have you ever heard about Voigtländer 40mm F2 Ultron SL II Canon, is that a good lens for filming?

  • @Kainthemain to be honest, making a movie look "professional" is how you do your post production. you can make a film look "professional" with any dslr lens.

  • @dipmvideos thats not true man. the lens does hve alot to say. i bought the Voigtländer 40mm F2 Ultron SL II Canon recently. Have you ever checked that one out?

  • @Kainthemain sure, but it wont look like a "professional" film til post. use a kit lens and edit well and you will have something a lot better than something with a 4000 dollar lens thats not edited as well. and nope i havent used that lens.

  • @Kainthemain its hard to find a bad lens with video though because its as high a resolution compared to still images so most of them will look really good. the 40mm focal length is nice, and the f/2 aperture should give you a shallow depth of field if you choose to have it.

  • @dipmvideos i see,the problem or advantage with this is that its all manuel, No auto focus. But even so i picked it becaus it seem like something new. The canon was made back in 1992. If you have any tips for filming to make it like a movie, could you make a video explaning that. And also could you explain a little about the shutter and how to adjust that on the 550d. I fixed the shutter to film in 60 frames but it gets really dark for some reason.

  • 1.4 is wicked. don't get 1.8

  • hey the 50mm 1.4 lens, you cant zoom in and out right.....

  • @lvlik9 no...

  • @lvlik9 technically both lenses zoom as you focus closer, but no zoom as you know it

  • hi, i want switch form nikon crop censor to canon fullframe , maybe the coming 5d mark3 .. do u think it is worth paying extra $300 for the 50mm f1.4 or the 50mm f1.8 will be fine.. which lens is sharper when it is wide open ?

  • @rahkshi007 For a full frame system I'd definitely say it is. The 1.8 is known to have soft focus on the corners on a crop sensor, I can only imagine how soft it would be on a full frame. The 1.4 build quality is worth it to me, I have used all 3 Canon 50mm's and the 1.4 is the best bang for your buck by far. The 1.2 is stunning (I use it for video with a Panasonic AF-100 at the company I intern at) but if I were to buy one which I probably will, I'd get the 1.4. Much batter at low f-stops.

  • Your photos arent that great for someone with the number of lenses you have . All the gear and no idea springs to mind!

  • Should I get a cannon 85mm F.8 or 50mm f.4 with my crop censor on my 60D? thanks! :D

  • @ZAFfilm i dont know how to answer that. its a matter of what focal length you like better.

  • @ZAFfilm If you haven't got it yet. get the 50mm. that will give like an 85mm on the 60d. Its a better lens as well.

  • @remy3315 yea well I sorda scrapped the 50mm and decided to jut start saving up for a 17-40mm

  • oh what kind of camera are you using?

  • @hereAIam 5D mark II

  • What about the 1.2 hahaa L lens ftw yes I agree when I got the 1.4 i was blown away as well because when taking pictures and video :D

  • @hereAIam i'd love to own a 1.2 haha! costs too much though D:

  • @dipmvideos do you do work with your cameras? like freelance work? you can make some commercials and sell your vid for money :D hahaha

  • @hereAIam haha the only freelance work i do right now is graphic design.

  • @dipmvideos I see, where did you get yours?

  • @AlexandherFilms local camera store if i remember correctly.

  • Great video! I'm thinking about getting the f1.4, You said it was $350?

Where did you get it because everywhere I look it's around $400-$450.

  • @AlexandherFilms prices have gone up since i made this video.

  • I loved my little 1.8 but it broke on the road..but it was a great low light carry around lens

  • the f1.4 focusing ring is able to rotate even in AF mode. what is the purpose of that? thank you.

  • @james09155 it doesnt. some lenses do that so you can make adjustments to the focus if youre not happy with it.

  • do u have the 85mm 1.8? im thinking of getting that next.

  • @sanoska206 nope, but i'm thinking about getting an 85 lens soon! i love primes!

  • Both are for night?

  • @JKL619JKL both could be used for low light, yes.

  • I own the 50 1.4 and I recommend it over the 1.8 which two of my friends own. The 1.4 is twice the price but still a cheap prime (along with the 85 1.8)! You can't beat the quality/price ratio! The 1.8 is too plasticy, too much like a toy, more noisier, no USM, lens diameter smaller (52mm) = quality less good, its lens hood (that u buy separate) is ugly. The 1.4 is the better investment, trust me! I got it in the US for about 300$ and I imported it to Europe (more expensive here).

  • @M3mPHiS great advice! for those with the money, i really recommend the 1.4 version. one thing though, although the 1.8 is more plasticy, the 1.4 is more prone to the problem of the auto focus system breaking. just one thing to take not of. other then that, its an awesome lens!

  • Hi man, your video is great which encourage me to ask an question: I gonna buy 50mm f1.8 II ($124) and the reason to buy it that all my friends recommend it for recording video with low NOISE and low Light environment and it gives the video a glimpse cinematic farther it is super cheap. so you used it for 2 years and I am sure you have an experience with recording a videos. So what is your opinion?

    Thank in advance.

  • @raidtariq all i can say is that its great for video! you can get amazing subject isolation with really nice bokeh (background blur) for a very affordable price!

  • he said "bajs" (buys) which means poop in swedish. HIHI

  • where can i find the 50mm 1.8 for a good rpice?

  • @thepinoys Check out "Thefind.com" or (uk).

  • @thepinoys i got mine from dell at a discount after i begged the sales lady she gave me 25% off 129.00 so it rounded to about 100.00

  • i can tell by your accent..

  • sell both and get the 1.2

  • @dizzychicken1 haha, i wish! maybe in the future :P

  • they retail for 90? All the ones I have been seeing ranges from 120 to 150?

  • @pspryu101 Look this up on google, Canon raised there prices about a week ago because of the American dollar not being worth that much, and something about the yen, they couldnt keep prices cuz of the exchange rate. Some lenses went up over $400 plus :(

  • @pspryu101 prices have gone up since i bought mine D:

  • Does your dad also put up videos on youtube-? If so what is his link?

  • @boilerjack nope, sorry :P

  • 50mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4 video quality r same?plzzz help me

  • Hi, great review cause Im new in this, but now I think is better to buy great glas at first cause better glass is for a long time and you get beter shots.

  • @pmae007 yup, definitely!

  • i live in canada and they charge 130$ for the 1.8! worth every penny though, it gives my 70-200 L a run for its money when stooped down to f/4

  • @vehlajatt22 yup, definitely worth it!

  • Nice video. Gonna go with the 1.8 because I have a low budget. Canon is being a pain though, the 1.8 now costs at least $120 and the 1.4 is now at least $400.

  • @All0ut yeah, the price increase really sucks. :S

  • what you see is what you get - wysiwyg (wizzywigg)

  • 1.8 is not as good for FF... I sold that lens and I buy 1.4... 1.8 version is not sharp like 1.4... but on crop sensors its very good lens

  • @TalaxY84 i disagree. the 50 1.8 is pretty damn sharp on my 5D2

  • they raised the price on the 1.8 now the cheapest i find is $120

  • Thanx !

  • Have you tried the 35mm 2.0 if so how is it? I'm a noob lol

  • @ValourTV i've never really read up on that lens. its a really old lens design, so i wouldnt really get it unless you really need it. not because its a bad lens, but because there are probably better options out there.

  • @dipmvideos thanks. im looking for a great lens to shoot videos the 50mm 1.4 looks awesome i seen some vids on vimeo would that be great for video?

  • @ValourTV yup

  • Is the 50mm 1.8 focus noisy during video?

  • @ValourTV it is actually quite noisy, even when you're using manual focus. you can defiantly hear it when you're using the onboard mic.

  • @dipmvideos is the 50mm 1.4 noisy?

  • would the 50mm 1.4 or the 1.8 be good for videos?

  • @ValourTV both should be good. i think that the 1.8 would be good enough! :D

  • Hi dipmvideos

Yes you got it. I think that was the problem you mentioned. I lost a mirrow called (focus screen). Fortunately i found it and i fixed it again thanks to a video of Christopherkblog "how to changing focus screen".

    Dipmvideos.

I have only a 50mm 1.8 for my brandnew 5d mark ii. Which lens(es) to you recommend?

My budged at the moment is about 2k.

I wud say i am a street photographer. I am looking for a good wide angle lens.

    ??

    Thanky you. Greez frim switzerland

  • @ArtJorgeCom id definitely look at the 35 1.4L and the 24 1.4L since you want something wider, and im sure you like nice shallow depth of field! those are 2 lenses that i really want myself!

  • Sorry !! Everything is fine now! I lost my focus screen and i fixed it again. :)

Btw, how to you clean th mirrows inside. They seem to be a little dirty. Thanks for advise

  • Hi dipmvideos.

I have a huge problem. I finally bought a 5d mark ii. I was so much impressed by this cam. I tried my 50mm 1.8 lens to make my first pictures. Everything was fine. Then I tried to put a sigma lens that i use for my croped 7D. Of course it didnt work. Then I reinstalled my 50mm 1.8 and since then when i look thru the viewfinder i have a circle like a tunnel view. I dont know but something has happened inside with the mirrors and the prism. Do you have an idea how i can fix it?

  • @ArtJorgeCom im sorry, i really dont know what the problem is. i also cant really picuture what youre trying to describe. i think that the lenses for cropped sensors are longer, so it might have came in contact with the mirror/sensor.

  • thumbs down to youtube popups

  • Wow! I'm glad to hear that. Thank you so much, you are really helpful! Hope you are doing some more videos.

  • Thank you for the answer. I decide to go with a 30 or 35 1.4.

One question more: do you think I should have rather go wit a 5D instead my 7D? Is my sensor with crop 1.6 a big disantvantage in this matter? Was my decision a mistake to go with the newer 7D? Thank you so much ! Lovely vids!!

  • @ArtJorgeCom the sensor is only at a very slight disadvantage in high ISO performance, i dont think you'd notice this though. the sensor also had some advantages. The 1.6x crop factor can be very useful in meny circumstances. it really depends on what you're shooting. I think the 7D is an amazing camera with so many excellent features. If i were to choose between the two today, it would be a hard decision, but i think id go with the 7D. Thanks for watching! :D

  • Hi, tx for the infos! I use the 7d and the 50mm 1.8. Want to replace it with the 50mm 1.4 or do you recommend even a 30 or 35mm du to my crop 1.6 sensor? Please help me.

  • @ArtJorgeCom A 35 would act as a 50 and a 50 would act as an 85. it really depends on what focal length you want.

  • Hey dip, have you had any issues with the 50mm 1.4 since you have it? I actually thought of replacing my 1.8 for it, but I have read so much about the AF issues already that I'm doubting whether it is worth the money.

Oh, and for those who might have problems I somewhere read the following possible "solution":

"If the AF staggers or stops working, just make sure to twist the lens clockwise all the way "in" – hard – then it will be fine. I used to have this problem but no longer."

  • @djonflaj i've heard of the issue, but have not have a problem with mine, so i cant really comment on it. Its a great lens! take care of it and you shoudlnt have a problem. If there is one, just let canon know and i'm sure they'll sort it out for you. Thanks for watching!
