no, they are not playing "properly". your guitar teacher is teaching you correctly. if you are right handed, the guitar goes over your left leg. that's the classical position.
you can play however you feel comfortable. it's just that the "proper" classical position is over the left leg. that's how i taught myself, even though i play either way depending on circumstance ( i don't always have a foot rest). just play how you feel comfortable. and try to stick to what your teacher is teaching you as well.
Why don't you show us what you can do on a guitar, meg? Until then: respectfully watch, listen and learn how Gabriela provides superb backbone and percussion to Rodrigo's solo work in this song.

you cant really compare them to hendrix, totally different styles of music and playing. both top of thier own respective areas of guitar. i know what you mean though, hendrix certainly would be no match for rodrigo on the acoustic, just as i think rodrigo would be demoloished by hendrix on the electric. tis my opinion
