i think the mobile phone law's came in around '02 as the company i worked for at the time refused to have hands free kits installed in the vans, so i ended up getting 1 of those cheapies from the petrol station for £5 when bought with fuel. i know that road well & that roundabout has good visibility, it was always the mini roundabout further along i kept forgetting was there (luckilly, i never had even so much as a close miss, it's now traffic light controlled junction).
yeah he was pretty blind but then you were overtaking on the wrong side of the road in a residential area and then carved the last guy you overtook up and cut across shevrons! the white van man needs to wake up a touch but if I would you I'd be approaching the roundabout a little slower and looking left as well as right!

@e36rik Well done, it takes a fair level of skill to remain that ignorant. Yes it's OK to overtake on a clear, straight road with good visibility. I suggest you go and take a CBT. It's a very useful tool to improve your awareness of other road users and learn to look at things from other peoples point of view whilst on the road. Even if you have no intention of ever riding a bike again, it helps you to be a better driver and appreciate the danger you could be putting other people in.

Saw something similar to this happen the other day, I was driving in the far right lane, there was a motorcycle in the middle lane and a land rover in the far left lane. Land rover just decides to get over and just puts the motorcycle in its back seat. Got up next to the land rover and it was a blond girl talking on her cell phone. The wife had to restrain me from getting out the car.

an indicator means nothing more than the bulb is working. you cannot and should not rely on an indicator as meaning anything else unless you see other indications (such as braking, changing road position and so on).
its especially a problem for drivers looking at bikes as there a precious few self cancelling indicators on bikes.
more like cant rely on what the other driver is going to do in quebec, anyways it happened, not my fault, and about the bike indicators, when you indicate a turn does it automaticly stop the blinker when you turn back to the stright position steering wise?
very few bikes have self cancelling indicators. even those that do are not like other vehicles.
some bikes have a timer fitted, some use a switch on the steering, neither work especially well. the steering switch fail to work many times as often y'don't use large steering moves to turn. the timer based may be better, but there is still the problem of the indicators being prematurely switched off if waiting to turn

Firstly, the van driver had roughly 5 seconds to see the bike had he been looking right as his van approached the roundabout.

Been there hundreds of times. I've tried bright orange clothing on my bright yellow bike and it doesn't make a jot of difference. I don't think I'd be seen even if I put a blue flashing light on my helmet!!!!

Perhaps you shouldn't have included the exuberant passing manoeuvre up the hill, even though I enjoyed it. It distracts from the fact the vanner was not paying attention and did the wrong thing.

an indicator means nothing more than the bulb is working. you cannot and should not rely on an indicator as meaning anything else unless you see other indications (such as braking, changing road position and so on).
its especially a problem for drivers looking at bikes as there a precious few self cancelling indicators on bikes.

more like cant rely on what the other driver is going to do in quebec, anyways it happened, not my fault, and about the bike indicators, when you indicate a turn does it automaticly stop the blinker when you turn back to the stright position steering wise?

very few bikes have self cancelling indicators. even those that do are not like other vehicles.
some bikes have a timer fitted, some use a switch on the steering, neither work especially well. the steering switch fail to work many times as often y'don't use large steering moves to turn. the timer based may be better, but there is still the problem of the indicators being prematurely switched off if waiting to turn

Had a white van pull out of a driveway right in front of me today, i had to swerve round him and up onto the path, i had no time to brake, would of been right up his arse. Twats like this shouldn't be on the road, just because they're in a big white cage, they think they own the road. i was knocked off my bike going along there, i was on a honda vfr 400, a car pulled right out in front of me in early morning traffic, and then she had the cheek to just drive off.. i went right onto the verge on the left.. bike was a right off.

He pulled over and stopped at the side of the road for as long as i could see him (and that road is loooong and goes uphill, so he scared himself to stop for a long time)
