I'm a 16 year boy With this and the doctors said it's not that big of a deal but it's still very noticeable and I really dont like it. If it doesn't effect my breathing (even though I'm pretty sure it does) could I still take this surgery?
@wowsucksbad12 Okay, Are you under health insurance? Basically, You have to get a CT scan of your chest and get a measuring of your Haller Index (Chest Dent Depth) being over 3.2 on this index. That's the main criteria for surgery. This benefits the surgeon and your insurance company otherwise the surgery is $60,000+. Other criteria is getting an ECG for heart function and a LungFunctionTest. If those score below average they increase your chance to get surgery approved.
@wowsucksbad12 If you don't meet the 3.2 requirement and/or normal function you probably won't get approved and will struggle to find a surgeon that will perform on it you and an insurance company to pay so it will be out-of-pocket expense. My best bet is google "Pectus Info Forums" they are a great help and have a range of help and resources to help you with this! Stories, Journals and much more. Good Luck. Any other questions just ask.
@TheCmc22 Actually, the breathing is improved after surgery, from my experience as being a runner with the bar in me, before it feels slightly restricted when you take a deep breath. Compared to when the bar is removed you feel as if your chest is expanding to your breaths. Feels great.
@Nabolzi For the first few weeks to months no you can't do any heavy training. Same as a few weeks before the surgery (Can't exercise chest before Operation a muscles have to be loose and relaxed). Post-Op you can't lift anything over 3pounds for a few days and slowly build-up. As for heavy weights I was told 2months until you can start doing 100% gym weights and the likes. I found doing lots of light weights is helping me.
@TehNinjaGabe I've been told CPR is not allowed to be carried out on PE patients. I then got my surgeons opinion and he said wear a MedicAlert ID tag that says "Surgical Steel bar in place under sternum extra compression force needed" This just means when administering CPR the paramedics need to really push down or inject adrenaline or use a defibrillator or other strategies (Mouth to Mouth)
4 years ago, I tried to do this procedure but the surgeon said my case was quite extreme and there's complication,so they stopped. They did tried many times but still failed. Another alternative would be "open surgery" and I had that done just last year. It was really awful. It's almost a year and I stil feel the pain from the surgery.
@sturmanrufer Agreed this surgery felt like I got hit by a car... Shit hurt bro... But I got the surgery done and just got the bar removed.. Feels good bro. Never felt better ^^
@Fyre654 I have PE not an extreme case but still very noticeable. How does breathing feel after surgery and bar removal like is it a lot better than before?
@TheCmc22 I got my bar this past summer. Breathing is normal after surgery and even though it may not feel like the surgery is worth it, it is. I'm 15 by the way. I was 14 at the time of the surgery. Message me if you have any questions.
@DjCrazyArms i Want to send you a message but it says that you would have to add me. i have some very important questions about the surgery i am 14 and need some info
if you say this surgery doesn't hurt, you're a liar lol...I felt like I was dying, but then again I had two bars in instead of one, the surgery is definitely worth it though, I haven't had any problems with breathing or blood flow since the surgery
Hey, i had my bar removed less than 48 hours ago, i feel incredible, almost don't feel pain, i can easily lay down on stomach and left side, because they've made cut on the right side, where the stabilizer was placed. So just want you to know that the extraction of the bar is far less painful and stressful than the first part of the surgery. And btw i'm from Serbia, so if anyone wants to know anything more about this, don't hesitate to contact me. I would recommend this surgery to anyone in deed
my bar actually shifted up so there a dent again 1month after surgery and if like thats not enough it got infected fuck my life seriously i did all this shit foer nothig
Guys I am selling a vacuum bell for treatment for pectus excavatum. I live in California go to ebay and paste this in the search box 150709818790 its the item number. The bell is new and listed cheap.
how much it costs? I'm eighteen (18) and I have PE and I'm so uncomfortable with this situation. it's not that deep but still, I want to fix this but I would like to know if the Nuss procedure is also available in countries like UK (because I'm portuguese)
@TheUltimateInsider ohhh youre right, it cost something like 2500e and i belive it is avaible in UK, i have also P.E makes my breathing harder, im gonna get the surgery no matter how much pain it will be, and its gonna be free for me cause of the finnish healthcare :)
I am 44 and have had a total of nine surgeries to repair my PE. All of them failed. This was many years ago. I have had my chest filled with silicone to help. My entire chest is a silicone plate which is very obvious. Would today's technology help correct my problem. I agree about insurance companies only seeing this as cosmetic. They will pay for reconstruction if you have cancer! Let one of those big shots who makes the calls have it and see how they feel.
i have pectus excavatum and its pretty deep but i don't have any symptoms or discomfort. Ive dont alot of sports including freerunning. would i need a surgery later on?
Actually there is a reason I have to ignore the systems because insurance seems to not want to pay... So you guessed it! I'm stuck with it now! TBH My test results were not normal. I have 3.6 Which falls under the severe case. Thanks Cigna!! :)
People from around the world come here for the surgery. Please take your time and read about CHKD so you can understand why you need to come here. Dr. Nuss is retired but the staff surgeons are extremely well trained and very professional!
I am sharing this with everyone I can so that they don’t repeat the mistakes that occurred to my nephew and the young man from Ohio. You will be in good hands at the Children’s Hospital!
Four days ago in the surgery waiting room here at CHKD while my wife and I waited for our son’s surgery, I met a man from Ohio who was waiting for his 20 year old son to have the bars taken out. He said that they incorrectly performed the surgery in Ohio and his son got staph infection. They came here to have his situation improved.
My nephew had the same surgery performed incorrectly six years ago at Shands in Gainesville and incorrectly done again at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. The bar slipped and he was in excrutiating pain. He had to fly to Norfolk and have Dr. Nuss (the procedure inventor) perform the surgery to get his situation corrected. It is near perfect now. My sister and her son (nephew) directed us to CHKD, because they perform more Pectus Excavatum surgeries than anywhere else in the U.S.
Our son is 19 years old and he just had the surgery performed at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia. The doctor successfully performed the surgery. The difference from his 3″ sunken chest to now is astounding!
I have not seen a doctor in 8 years, but it is so damn obvious that I have this condition. There's a damn hole in my chest, and it's growing inward! Fucking insurance... Am I just going to die eventually, or what?
Hi everyone. I'm 19 and I have P.E. BUT I have improved my body; I made it less noticeable with bodybuilding. I've gained weight and it looks miles better than before, of course I didn't get rid of it completely, but at least it's not that noticeable
Thank you for sharing this video. My son is undergoing this procedure in a month and this really helped us understand what will be happening. This is such a wonderful resource for parents and kids alike. Thank again.
@tomnjulietay It's been a week since my 13 year old had this done. He ended up with 2 bars instead of one because of the severity of his pectus excavatum. He did not get the epidural talked about in this video, but was on oral and IV meds. He is now only taking ibuprofen every 6 hours and each day is getting better and better. Heads up though, it is an EXTREMELY painful procedure, but well worth it if you're having issues with your lungs or heart. Thanks again for sharing this video.
Thank you for posting this video! I have a lot of contacts in the Marfan & Congenital Diaphramatic Hernia communities so I will pass this on for them!

I'm from Belgium and it is about € 2500 that's about $ 3.610
I guess prices may vary from country to country and hospital to hospital, also note that in my case the health ensurance didn't pay anything.
